The Wrong Trolley (手推车) — an Amazing Food Adventure
On Saturday, Mum went to visit her friends in the city, and Ollie, Dad and I went to do the shopping. The car
park at the supermarket was very full. Inside, it was packed like sardines in a tin, every checkout full of trolleys and
staff busy running around. Dad said we needed to work together: Ollie pushed the trolley, I checked the list, and he
did the running and grabbing. When we walked past the flower stand, Dad picked a big bunch of yellow flowers,
saying, “We may be in a rush, but we still have to take time to smell the roses.”
We inched through the crowds, ticking off things on the list one by one. We passed the exotic (异国风味的)
foods section without getting anything — our family isn’t very good with new foods. Dad picked out a big chicken
for a roast dinner. Tired of the slow pace, Dad suggested we leave the trolley, split the list three ways and go back
and forth. It worked, and soon we reached the checkout. Dad told us to wait outside and he picked up a magazine
while unloading. After Dad came out, he unlocked the car. “Home!” said Ollie. “We’ll have a roast dinner tonight!”
Back home, I noticed the yellow flowers were missing. As we unpacked, there was no chicken or frozen peas
we’d bought, but strange items: Tofu, mushrooms, meatballs, chilli sauce, soup base and others. Dad sighed, “We’ve
taken the wrong trolley!” It must have happened when we left the trolley behind or when Dad was distracted by the
magazine at the checkout.
Dad looked around in the shopping bags. “Well, I guess we could try something else. But what on earth do we
do with these?” He held up some packets of spices. We looked on the Internet and found the ingredients were for the
spicy hotpot from Sichuan, China, which is often a stew (炖煮的菜肴) served with chilli sauce. “Your mum quite
likes a stew,” Dad nodded at us.

Passage 2

Today I turn eight, so whatever I say goes.
Grandma was gardening when we pulled up for the party. I ran straight to her. “Happy birthday, sweetie!” She
squeezed me into a hug, whispering about my favorite chocolate-strawberry cake she had made, and her intention to
persuade my parents to let me play video games, which hadn’t happened since I was six. Then, I noticed Grandpa,
who, contrary to my grandma, always sits outside and complains that the air isn’t as fresh as it is in the mountains
where he used to go hiking for days when he was young, and that kids have no respect, claiming that all they do is
play video games. Now on the porch sat Grandpa, like a sack of wrinkled onions, asleep in a rocking chair, snoring
like thunder, on his only grandson’s birthday!
“Wake up, sleepyhead!” I mounted the porch steps, only to be greeted by more snores. “Fine,” I groaned,
“we’ll have the cake without you!” It was Grandma’s request to wait ten more minutes that brought me to tears. An
angry hurricane was spinning up inside me, and I exploded. My fists clenched, I had been sobbing and screaming
until Dad held my shoulder firmly. Mom touched my hair, instructing me to take a deep breath and relax.
Finally, Grandpa was awake, coughing, snorting, and squinting right at me like an angry goat. “Boy,” he spoke
in a rough, low voice, “come here.” He was struggling to his feet when Grandma hurried over with his walker, which
Grandpa usually pushes at about 0.3 miles per hour. “You and I,” said Grandpa, “are going on a walk.” “NO!” I
shouted. “You can’t tell me what to do!” But Grandpa kept looking at me with that scary look on his face. Not even
Grandma came to my rescue. Unwilling as I was, I gave in and dragged myself forward. Then we were inching down
the path into the garden. I expected him to lecture me-about ceasing to be a spoiled child and respecting my elders,
blah, blah, blah. Instead, he asked in a soft voice whether my parents were very busy. I was too confused to
respond.

As soon as the chilly winds winter gave way to spring, Sarah, Tom, Mia and I would find ourselves in our
community garden. Armed with a spade (铲子), seed packets, gardening gloves and the secret smiles that had slept
through the long winter, we got to work side by side. Yet this year, the gentle breeze failed to ease the anxiety in my
heart. My father’s job transfer meant leaving behind the familiar streets, saying goodbye to my friends and parting
with the Green Ark (方舟), the community garden shaped by our love and labor.
On the day of our departure, a soft rain fell. With misty eyes, we said our goodbyes. Sarah knew every plant
by heart; Tom built wooden supports with steady hands; Mia painted flower beds with color and patience; I loved
watching seedlings (幼苗) break through the soil. We had planned an autumn exhibition, but before summer arrived, I
was gone. “There will be gardens where you’re going,” Sarah said, tears clouding her eyes. Yes — but none could
replace the land we had tended together.
In my new community, people passed one another with few greetings exchanged. Doors closed, conversations
were brief and neighbors remained strangers. There was little sense of shared space or shared care. So did the garden.
Weeds claimed the paths, weathered tools piled in the corner, and the roses bent low in the wind, lonely and tired.
One evening, unable to bear the garden, I called Sarah and poured out my loss.
Before long, she came to see me, and we met in the garden of my community. Under the mild afternoon sun,
we embraced, laughing in surprise. Then came a familiar sound — the click of tools, the sound of big scissors. I
turned to see Tom and Mia standing there, as if no time had passed.

We had a three-station self-service dog wash, which was extremely popular as the area has a lot of farms, and
is close to a lot of hiking trails and has a large number of dog show enthusiasts.
A customer came in one day with three, yes, THREE full-grown Saint Bernard dogs to give them all baths.
Fortunately, she is very organized; She brought them in one at a time, and it was in the fall, so it was safe for them to
be in the car with the windows cracked for a longer time. She and her delightful pets spent somewhere around five
to six hours in the store, cycling one dog at a time and using the same tub (桶) so the other two were open to other
customers.
Unfortunately, one St. Bernard dog got a little too relaxed during her bath and leaned her roughly 130 lbs
weight against the spigot (水龙头), causing the elbow joint (接合处) to bend and block the water flow. The customer
apologized repeatedly, but my manager assured her it was OK. The customer switched the dog to another tub, and
my manager took apart the affected spigot, removing the damaged elbow joint. With that in hand, he grabbed a few
$20and gave them to me with the joint and a request to go to the only nearby store, where the boss has a lovely yellow
dog, for a new one.
The boss walked by just as I was considering going to ask for help. He greeted me and asked how he could
help. I explained I worked at a pet store and that we needed a new part for one of our dog wash tubs. Then I handed
him the elbow joint. To my great disappointment, his store didn’t have this kind of elbow joint. What was worse,
there were no other stores like this in the neighborhood. My store’s business was going really well, and being unable to
buy this part would affect our operations—I was extremely anxious and didn’t know what to do.

Passage 1
(2026·高三·湖南常德·二模)
Pad was a farmer. Her husband Rame was a retired government officer and part-time farmer. They lived in a
small town in India. Neither Pad nor Rame was large. But each one’s average size and build gave a false impression
of a farmer’s strength, which came from working the fields.
On a misty February morning in 2025, they made their way across their plot of land, where they were harvesting
black pepper. Soon, Rame was climbing at the top of a Mexican lilac tree, which was close to the family well. He
picked peppers from the vines that wound around its trunk, while Pad worked nearby. Then a sharp cracking sound
pierced (划破) the quiet morning. The branch beneath Rame broke, and he lost his balance. He fell into the 40-foot
well below, striking his head and back against the wall on the way down.
Pad heard the crash, then the terrifying splash (落水声). She rushed to the well and looked down into the
darkness. She called her husband’s name. His faint voice echoed back — he was all right. She immediately found a
rope and lowered it into the well for him to climb back up. For a few seconds, she waited for a response. Then he
cried out, “I can’t. I’m too weak, and my leg is hurt.”
Pad went into rescue mode. She grabbed the thick rope attached to the well’s pulley system (滑轮系统). As
she tied one end of the rope to a nearby tree, she called the fire department. After tying the other end of the rope
around her waist, Pad walked onto the lip of the well and climbed down.
The moss-covered wall was slippery, and her feet kept sliding off. Meanwhile, the rope was cutting into her hands,
leaving her palms bloody. Midway down, Pad had to land on a rock stretching out from the well. She looked down
into the darkness, hoping to catch sight of Rame. But she couldn’t see or hear anything.

Passage 2
(2026·高三·湖南张家界·二模)
It was a sunny summer afternoon. Lila and her father were camping in the Pine Ridge Forest. They had set up
their tent near a small river, and her father had taught her how to tell different kinds of trees and track small animals.
Lila was having the time of her life, running through the woods, collecting pine cones and listening to the birds
singing.
In the late afternoon, the sky suddenly turned dark. The wind picked up, and the leaves on the trees started to
shake loudly. “A storm is coming,” her father said, his voice serious. “We need to get back to the tent right now,
before the rain comes.” They started to walk quickly along the path back to their camp.
Just as they turned a corner, Lila heard a soft, weak sound. She stopped, her ears pricked up. “Dad, did you
hear that?” she said. Her father stopped and listened. “It’s just the wind, Lila. We have to hurry.” But Lila heard it
again-a low, sad whimper (呜咽声), coming from the bushes beside the path.
She walked over to the bushes and pulled the branches apart. There, under a bush, was a little fox, no bigger
than a cat. Its left front leg was caught in a metal trap (捕猎夹), and it was shaking with fear and pain. Its big, round
eyes looked up at Lila, filled with terror.
“Oh no, Dad!” Lila cried. “We have to help it!” Her father knelt down beside her, his face worried. “Lila, the
storm is almost here. If we don’t get back to the tent soon, we’ll be stuck in the heavy rain, and it’s very dangerous
in the woods. The trap is strong, and it will take time to open it.” Lila looked at the little fox, its leg bleeding a
little, and her heart ached. She couldn’t leave it here alone, to die in the storm.

Gerard worked as a mail sorter in the post office. It was an ordinary job, dull enough to make his enthusiasm fade
away. However, there was always a way for him to find his passion back — play a little magic with a gold coin.
One day, Gerard was doing his routine work skillfully and responsibly, reading the addresses on the letters and
placing them into specific boxes. After hours-long work, he got tired and settled back in his seat to have a rest. His
hand reached for the coin habitually, which he put in his inner pocket. The coin immediately transported Gerard back
to his innocent and sunny childhood, when he stood right in front of a legendary magician. And the old man’s words
were still ringing in his ears:
You see this coin I have here?
Don’t blink!
Now I’m sure you thought the coin was in this hand.
Well, you would be right.
I have always found the most exciting trick is about finding magic in the least likely place.
Well, there you go, Gerard.
You can keep that coin.
Keep it safe.
Maybe one day there will be a time when you can create a little magic of your own on the stage.
How he wished that he were such a great magician like the old man! Gerard was so caught up in the memories
that he tossed the coin unthinkingly, which flew out and was nowhere to be seen. All the scenes were witnessed by a
little girl and she found the gold coin swiftly, but she just held and appreciated it herself. Aware of her reluctance and
unwillingness to return the coin, Gerard offered to perform magic for her. The small girl handed it to Gerard, excitedly
waiting for his tricks.
The little lady was awed that the coin disappeared mysteriously and appeared from the least likely places even
though she didn’t blink at all. Secretly, a seed was planted in her heart and she stretched out her hands in the hope of
keeping the coin and creating her little magic.

Passage 2

Ms. Rivera had taught math long enough to recognize the look on a student’s face when numbers stopped
meaning anything. It wasn’t boredom exactly. It was a quiet withdrawal, as if the mind had stepped back and closed
a door. She saw that look on Jonah in the second week of the semester.
Jonah sat near the back, his notebook crowded not with notes, but with dinosaurs. Long-necked giants marched
across the blank areas. Sharp-toothed hunters filled the whole pages. When Ms. Rivera explained math problems,
Jonah’s pencil slowed, and then drifted back to drawing scales and claws. On quizzes, he left problems unfinished,
as if he had started a sentence in a language he no longer trusted himself to speak.
Instead of reminding Jonah, Ms. Rivera began to watch. She noticed how he stayed after the bell to add
shadows to a tail, how he carefully labeled bones, and how his backpack was decorated with a small, worn dinosaur
keychain. A student frozen by numbers, yet completely alive when his world had teeth and tails.
One afternoon, Ms. Rivera found Jonah in the empty classroom, erasing and redrawing the same creature.
When Jonah saw Ms. Rivera, he stiffened, ready for a warning. But she only asked, “How many species have you
drawn so far?” Jonah hesitated, and then started counting softly. “Twelve...no, thirteen.” She nodded. “And if five of
them are meat-eaters and the rest eat plants, how many plant-eaters do you have?” He answered without realizing it
and then looked up, surprised.
That evening, a smart idea hit Ms. Rivera for her next lesson. The next day, instead of a list of exercises, the
board showed a simple sketch of a group of dinosaurs and a pile of food. “If three dinosaurs share nine fish,” she
asked, “how many does each dinosaur get?” A few students laughed, but Jonah didn’t. He leaned forward, counting
with his fingers.

In the fall of 1993, high school senior Jed Mottley from the Scottsdale, seemed to have it all. But despite Jed’s
big smile and outgoing personality, the teen was hiding parts of his home life from classmates — he came from a
poor family.
At home, Jed’s mom Gerry raised him and his elder brother Josh alone, working odd jobs to make ends meet.
Despite the family’s struggles, Jed describes his mom as loving, artistic, and dedicated to her faith and her kids. And
so, of course, Gerry didn’t want her younger son to miss out on a tradition of passage for any school athlete: getting
his letterman jacket.
“I remember being at the jacket shop with my mom and brother, and I designed it with Josh,” he says of the
jacket — bright red and gold for the Chaparral Firebirds, with his name and letter proudly displayed on the front.
A couple of months later, Jed’s jacket was ready for pickup. The price was expensive — about $300. “And my
mom said, ‘We can’t afford it right now. We’ll pick it up next month.” She said the same thing the month after that.
“And then it was the end of the school year, and high school was over, and I never got my jacket. I never even got to
see the final product,” he says. “It was just one of those regrettable things. Since then, I have never mentioned this
regret of mine to my mom or brother again.”
The years that followed brought many changes and events. Jed traded football for rock and roll. His beloved
mom passed away in 2012. And Jed and his brother Josh didn’t see each other in a few years. Fast-forward to
November 2021. Jed was in Los Angeles, working as a bass player in a local band. Meanwhile, Josh stopped over in

Passage 1
(2026·高三·湖南怀化·二模)
My grandmother’s hands were never still. I remember watching her sit by the window, holding tiny beads (珠
子) and threads. With careful fingers, she would string them together, one by one, until they formed a small, beautiful
charm. “This is not just a decoration,” she would say softly, “every bead holds a wish.”
I spent many afternoons beside her, sorting beads by color. She let me try stringing the beads together, but my
threads always ended in a mess. I failed again and again, growing increasingly impatient. I frowned and gave up
quickly, unwilling to practice any more. I did not understand why she worked so slowly and why every bead had to
be just so. I put the threads and beads aside and never touched them again. To me, it was just playing with pretty
things.
Time passed. I grew older and moved to the city. My grandmother worked alone. People no longer wanted
handmade charms and bought shiny ones from shops. They were cheaper and looked more modern. I heard that my
grandmother had stopped making them. She looked helpless and always felt down.
Then one winter, I came home and found her sitting in her old chair. The bead box was closed. Dust sat on the
windowsill. She looked up and smiled, holding out her hand. In her hand lay a small and simple charm — a red bead
with a silver thread. It was the first one I had ever made with her many years ago. I held it and felt something warm
spread through my chest.
That night, I could not sleep. Memories of her warm hands and kind smiles filled my mind. I hated to see her
beloved handcraft fade away as she grew old. I deeply wanted to carry on her skill but feared I was too clumsy to
learn it. Torn between hope and worry, I finally calmed my heart. I realized love mattered more than anything else,
so I decided I would ask Grandma to teach me again.
