The lunch bell rang and the class rushed to get in line. But Kojo stayed at his desk to make sure that he was
last.
“Come on!” “Hurry up!” His classmates called and Kojo finally fell in place as they made their way down
the hall to the cafeteria (食堂).
Kojo’s classmates carried cool-looking lunch bags: fashionable, colorful, zippered bags containing all kinds
of delights and delicacies. Instead, he carried an old one given by his grandma. Kojo dragged his feet, his head
hung down and his lunch bag hung behind.
During lunch, Kojo cautiously sat at a table with his new classmates. He unzipped his lunch bag and slowly
pulled out his lunch — some traditional dishes from his grandmother’s kitchen. As he opened the container, a
classmate across the table burst into laughter, pointing at the lunch bag. Kojo’s cheeks turned red with
embarrassment as he quickly zipped up his lunch bag, feeling a wave of shame wash over him. He wished he could
disappear.
Later that day, feeling upset, Kojo returned home. His grandmother noticed his depression and sat down
beside him. “What’s troubling you, my boy?” she asked gently. As he explained what happened in the day, her eyes
softened with understanding. She opened the lunch bag and gently traced its worn fabric. “You know, Kojo,” she
began, her voice filled with warmth, “this lunch bag carries more than just your lunch. It carries our family’s
history. Your grandfather and his father used this very bag to carry their lunches, too. It has seen generations of men
in our family working hard and taking pride in who they are.”
Kojo listened with interest. His grandmother continued, detailing stories from their family’s past, about the
traditions passed down through time. Each tale celebrated their culture and the unique dishes that had made their
family. With each story, his embarrassment began to fade, replaced by a newfound appreciation for his heritage.

Every October, my parents take my little brother Tex and me to pick out some pumpkins on a pumpkin patch
(小块地), and carve them into different shapes for the jack-o’-lantern (南瓜灯) party in our neighbourhood. This
year, just the day before Halloween, when we drove to a pumpkin patch, there was straw scattered all over the
ground and piles of hay on the farm. Most importantly, there were pumpkins.
“Here I come!” I shouted, eager to pick the best pumpkin to make the scariest jack-o’-lantern. Suddenly I
found a large pumpkin and ran over. But just before I picked it up, I spotted a big hole in it! “That one right over
there is mine!” Tex said, racing around a hay pile to get to his perfect pumpkin. But when he got closer, he said,
“No fair! Someone took a bite.”
A man with a cap came over. He said his name was Joe, the owner of the farm. He told us that some hungry
animals discovered the patch and had been visiting for the past few weeks. Every morning, he found more
pumpkins with a bite or two taken out. By that point, the animals had got the whole patch and he didn’t have any
perfect pumpkin any more. “Should we just quit this party?” said my mom, shaking her head. “No,” said my dad,
determined. “I don’t believe in giving up. If Plan A fails, we have to get creative and come up with Plan B .So
what’s our Plan B?”
After thinking for a while, we had our Plan B — buy some pumpkins at the store. So we headed to the store.
But when we got to a nearby store, all pumpkins were sold out. We tried other stores. Guess what? Still no luck.
“What should we do now? The jack-o’-lantern party is coming.” Tex said, with tears in his eyes.

Our house stood opposite the entrance of a popular hospital in the city. We lived downstairs, renting out the
upstairs rooms to outpatients (门诊病人) . One summer evening, as I prepared dinner, I heard a knock on the door
while I was doing my chores. I opened the door to a truly awful-looking man with a terribly swollen face. “Good
evening,” he said pleasantly. “I’ve come to see if you’ve a room for just one night. I arrived this morning from the
eastern shore for treatment and must wait for the morning bus.” He explained his fruitless search since noon,
considering that his appearance discouraged potential hosts. “I know my face looks terrible, but my doctor says
with a few more treatments…”
A moment of hesitation passed before his next words convinced me: “I can sleep in this rocking chair on the
porch. My bus leaves early.” We agreed to find him a bed, though he could rest on the porch in the beginning.
Inside, I finished supper, then invited him to join us. “No, thank you, ” he replied, holding up a brown paper bag.
After cleaning up, I joined him on the porch. It didn’t take a long time to see that this old man had an oversized
heart crowded into that tiny body. He explained that he fished for a living to support his daughter, her five children,
and her husband, who was permanently crippled (瘸的) from a back injury. He didn’t tell it by way of complaint. In
fact, he was grateful that no pain accompanied his disease, which was apparently a form of skin cancer.
That night, we set up a camp cot in the kids’ room for him. In the morning, the linens were neatly folded, and he
was already outside. He declined breakfast. But before leaving for the bus, he asked hesitantly, “Could I please
return for my next treatment? I won’t inconvenience you. I can sleep well in a chair.” He added, “Your children
made me feel at home. Adults are bothered by my face, but children don’t seem to mind.” I assured him he was
always welcome here. 注意:

In a quiet little town, there was a small park where children would laugh and play. In the center of this park
stood a wooden swing set. Among the children, a nine-year-old girl named Lily had a special bond with this swing.
Every day after school, she would rush to the park, her backpack bouncing against her back, and spend hours
soaring through the air, her laughter mingling with the wind.
Lily's best friend, Ethan, was a boy who lived next door. They were inseparable, sharing secrets, dreams, and
endless adventures. Often, you would find them on those swings, their feet barely touching the ground, their
imaginations taking them far beyond the confines of the playground. They dreamed of becoming astronauts,
traveling to outer space, and discovering new worlds together.
One sunny afternoon, Lily tested the limits of the swing. With a determined push,Ethan soared high, feeling
the thrill as the swing reached its top. "Look, Lily! I'm flying!" Ethan shouted, his laughter ringing through the air.
But not far from the park, his parents watched them with great concerns. There was an uneasy tension growing.
When Ethan came down from the swing, his parents rushed to the swing and took him home immediately.
Later that evening, Lily cried on the couch, her tears staining the fabric. "Mom, Ethan said he would not
play with me anymore. Why?" she asked, worry pooling in her blue eyes. Her mother took a deep breath, but the
words seemed to be trapped in her throat. "I'm not sure, sweetie. He... He might be leaving for a while.”
Days turned into weeks, and the park felt emptier without Ethan's laughter. Each swing back and forth felt
like a reminder of theirvanished adventures. With every passing day, Lily's heart sank deeper into confusion and
sorrow. She hoped that he would return, refusing to accept that he might not come back again.

I had booked the flights in somewhat of a hurry with just a carry-on bag, thinking 7 kgs was enough for a 3-
day trip to Taupo. I thought I’d given myself enough time to get to the airport, however, as often was the case, I was
running late and had to pack my bag with little time left. Confused about what to carry, I stuffed all the clothes in
my little bag, taking no notice of the weight.
Thirty minutes before the flight, I was waiting at my terminal ( 航站楼) in the airport and couldn’t stop
smiling. I was too excited to go on a much-needed trip. A little while later, I heard an announcement “Passengers
flying to Taupo on Flight NZ5091 are requested to weigh your cabin luggage and collect your tag”. I stood in the
line waiting for my turn, clueless about how much my bag would weigh, deep inside hoping not over the weight
limit.
When it was my turn, I placed my bag on the weighing scale and whoaaaa!! It was 9.4 kgs. I asked the flight
attendant if I could buy $20 extra luggage allowance (行李费) as shown on the app but I was too late for it. Instead,
I was asked to pay an additional fee of $65. I either had to pay or leave something away to bring it down to 7 kgs. I
asked the attendant whether they would give my stuff back to me if I returned 3 days later and surprisingly I was
told I wouldn’t get it back.
To me, a bad luggage experience had the power to completely sour a trip. With no other alternatives, I
decided to give up some of my stuff. Unsettled, annoyed, disappointed! As I started removing the items, I saw a
lady approaching me. It looked like she had heard the whole thing. She sat down next to me. “Are you OK? I
should be able to help you.” She said.

Due to a medical misdiagnosis (误诊), Susan, 34, had been left sightless, and was suddenly thrown into a
world of darkness, anger, frustration and self-pity. And all she had to depend on was her husband, Mark.
Mark was an officer and he loved Susan with all his heart. When she first lost her sight, he watched her sink
into despair. He was determined to help his wife gain confidence to become independent and return to her normal
life again. But how would he do that?
Susan used to take the bus to work, but now she was too frightened to face the whole world. Mark decided to
convince Susan to take the bus again. Perhaps one day she could enjoy a city tour all by herself or buy some daily
grocery in the supermarket three stops away. But she was still so moody and sensitive. How would she react?
One day, Mark summoned up his courage and said “Honey, life shall move on, let’s try taking the bus as the
first step, OK?” Just as he predicted, Susan was scared at the idea of taking the bus on her own. “I’m blind!” she
responded bitterly. “How am I supposed to know where I am going? I feel like you’re abandoning me.”
Mark’s heart broke hearing these words, but he knew what had to be done. He promised Susan he would ride
the bus with her until she got the hang of it. And that was exactly what happened. For a whole week, Mark
accompanied Susan on the bus. He taught her how to rely on her other senses, specifically her hearing, to determine
where she was and how to adapt to her new environment. He helped her befriend the bus drivers who could watch
out for her, and save her a seat.
Finally, Susan decided to try the trip on her own. Mark encouraged her and decided to continue watching out
for her until she got off the bus, only in secret.

Sadhana had been living with Mr. and Mrs. Acharya for over six months now. They were a retired couple
who had taken her in as a paying guest while she pursued her first year of engineering college in a brand new city.
Despite being away from her own family for the first time ever, the Acharyas had made her feel at home with their
warmth and kindness. Mr. Acharya, a retired economist, had been particularly helpful with her studies. He often
reviewed her notes, offered advice and patiently explained complex concepts to her. His friendly nature and
mentoring made her academic journey smoother and more enjoyable. But today was different.
It was her birthday and being so far away from her family made her feel very low. The care the Acharyas
showered her with was comforting, but she felt a void (空白) only her beloved family members could fill on her
special day. She sat quietly in the living room, where Mr. Acharya was engaged in a book and Mrs. Acharya was
busy in the kitchen. “I miss my family so much today,” Sadhana said softly, her voice filled with sadness. Mrs.
Acharya looked up from her cooking, her eyes full of understanding. “We know it’s tough, dear. Being away from
family on special days can be really hard.”
Sadhana managed a small smile. “I’m so grateful for your company. You’ve really made me feel at home.”
Mrs. Acharya patted her head kindly and served them dinner. The meal was delicious, but she just couldn’t help but
feel gloomy. She tried to focus on the conversation and enjoy the food, but her thoughts kept drifting back to her
family. She thought about how, every year on her birthday, her mother cooked her favourite meal and her father
took her on a lovely long drive and treated her to her favourite mango ice cream.
After dinner, Mrs. Acharya, with a mysterious smile, said, “My dear, stop being upset. Come with me!”

I have always been fond of all sorts of chocolates, especially bitter baking chocolate. My mother had
purchased a bar of it, and somehow, I couldn’t get it out of my mind.
I was assisting my father on the farm. Just then, an idea struck me. I could cut off a chunk ( 厚块) of the
chocolate. My mother would surely notice it, but before she discovered who had done it, I could admit that I had
taken it. Probably, I might not even receive a spanking (打屁股).
I waited until my mother went out to feed the chickens. Then, I told my father that I would go inside for
some water. I took down the bar and was about to cut it when I heard my mother coming back. I reacted swiftly,
slipping the chocolate into my pocket and running out. Before returning to help my father, I went to the barn and
hid the chocolate there.
On my way out, I calmed down a bit and could think more clearly. I told myself that I hadn’t actually stolen
the entire bar of chocolate because I only intended to take a small piece. If I put the whole bar back, I wouldn’t
have done anything wrong.
I almost decided to put it all back. But just thinking about that chocolate made my tongue almost taste its
smooth bitterness. I started thinking that if I sliced about half an inch off the end with a sharp knife, my mother
might never notice it.
Suddenly, I remembered what my father had said once — some of the family money was mine because I had
helped earn it. Why wouldn’t it be okay to think that the bar of chocolate had been bought with my own money?
That seemed to fix everything.

Lily had always been a frail and sickly girl since her childhood. She was constantly in and out of hospitals,
battling various minor illnesses. Her weak physical condition made her feel like an outsider among her peers who
were always full of energy and vitality in and out of school.
One day, when Lily heard about the school cross-country race would be held soon, an thought came into her
mind suddenly. She decided that this was her chance to prove to herself and everyone else that she was more than
just a sickly girl. Without the slightest hesitation, she decided to enter for the greatest ever race for herself.
Considering her poor strength, her parents and friends tried to persuade her to give it up. However, Lily didn’t
change her mind and started to train for the race from then on.
At first, every step was a struggle. She would get out of breath quickly and her legs would ache after just a
short distance. But Lily was bound and determined to challenge herself. She started with short walks, gradually
increasing the distance each day. She would push herself a little further each time, ignoring the pain and tiredness.
As the days passed, Lily’s strength began to grow little by little. She could run for longer periods without stopping
and her endurance (忍耐力) improved significantly.
The day of the big cross-country run arrived at last. Lily stood at the starting line and her heart beat quickly
and loudly with excitement and a touch of nervousness. As the starting gun fired, Lily took off with other runners.
The course was really tough, with hills and rough terrain, but Lily didn’t draw back. She kept pushing forward,
remembering every detail of the training she had put great efforts into. As she ran, she focused on her breathing and
her pace, without realizing the tiredness was slowly beginning to occur.

I used to believe that homeless people could only receive but not give. However, a chance encounter with a
girl at a soup kitchen (救济站) one evening completely changed my perspective.
That evening, I was volunteering with my school at Andre House, a soup kitchen we visit about twice a
month to help prepare meals for those in need. I particularly enjoy being involved in food preparation and serving
on the line because it allows us to build connections with those we are serving.
While the people we encounter at the soup kitchen come from diverse backgrounds and circumstances, the
shared expression of gratitude, often in the form of “Thank you for your service”, makes the experience a lot more
meaningful.
On this particular night, there was an unusually high number of people at Andre House. We were kept busy
working, concerned that there might not be enough food for so many people. Fortunately, when everyone had been
served, there was still one portion (份) of food left. Just then, at that late hour, a girl appeared in the soup kitchen
and asked for food.
“You’re lucky. You’re the last person who can get food here this evening,” I said. “Thank you,” the shy girl
whispered as I handed her the food. I noticed that she was around my age and couldn’t help but wonder what kind
of trouble she had gone through to end up here. Seeing her made me realize how fortunate I was to have a roof over

Undoubtedly, Mother Nature is always attractive to kids. In our childhood, how often did we turn a deaf ear
to our parents’ advice? Very often! Thus, we landed ourselves in a situation where we greatly regretted our act of
not having listened to the advice of the wise.
Such an unforgettable experience I had at the age of 7 gave me an invaluable lesson, after which I deeply
understood why my gentle mother was repeating the boring suggestions and I would try to take her suggestions
seriously.
In my childhood, I was so crazy about nature that even playing among the colorful flowers in our garden
could make my day. Our house was next to the woods which had always stirred up(激起) great curiosity in me in
wanting to find out what was within. Every time I saw fascinating butterflies dancing from the woods, my curiosity
grew.
But my mother didn’t like me wandering off on my own and always ensured that I was within her sight.
Even if she allowed me to explore the surrounding area on my own, it was only to be somewhere near the house.
Being as curious as the cat, I always desired to explore the woods. It seemed as if my mother had understood my
desire, so she had warmed me on lots of occasions never to enter the woods alone.
“Mom, can I go out and play in the garden?” I asked.
“Sure,” she would reply each time. “Kate, you can play in the garden but you must promise me one thing—
only when I’m with you can you go into the woods. There are no cases of animal attacks on humans, but it’s still
dangerous for a little kid like you. It’s too easy to get lost in the woods.”
“Sure, you’ve said that many times!” I answered without patience at her repeated reminders.

After World War I, a small group of veterans returned to their village in France. Most of them managed to
get along quite well, but one — Barton, who had been wounded and never recovered his strength — was unable to
work regularly. After some time, he gradually became so poor that he could barely support his wife and five
children. Yet he was a man with great self- respect and too proud to accept charity from the the villagers.
Once each year the veterans held a reunion dinner party. On one of these occasions they met in the home of
Clinton, who had made a fortune and had grown self-important. Clinton produced a curiosity by showing them a
large coin, about whose age and value he kept talking for long. Each man examined it with interest as it passed
around the long table. All had drunk wine freely and the dining room was resounded with noisy talk, so that the
gold coin was soon forgotten. Later, when Clinton wanted to get it back, however, the coin was missing.
Immediately there arose questions and denials. Finally the village lawyer suggested everyone be searched, to
which all agreed — except Barton. His companions looked at him with surprise.
“You refuse, then?” asked Clinton. Barton turned red. “Yes,” he said. “I can’t allow it.”
“Did you realize,” asked the owner of the gold coin, “What your refusal means?”
“I did not steal the gold coin, and I will not agree to such a search.” Barton answered firmly.
One by one, the rest of the group turned out their pockets. When the coin failed to appear, attention was
focused once more on poor Barton again.
“Surely you should not insist on your refusal.” The lawyer demanded.
Barton made no reply. Clinton walked out of the room in anger. No one spoke another word to Barton and he
returned to his home.
From that day on, Barton was regarded as a dishonest man. People turned their eyes away when they met
him.
