 第五部分 模拟试题中的运用(背诵范文中的形容词作状语)

1.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。(2026 届浙江省精诚联盟联
考))
Here are a few things you need to know about my dad. First, he was a slightly impatient kind of guy. If he
wanted something done, he wanted it done NOW, if not sooner. Second, you need to know that Dad was an early
riser. Every single day. No exceptions. No excuses. Work or no work. Holidays or vacation days, there was my
father, up and ready to go. Oh, and you should know that Mom was a night owl, up late watching a late movie or a
wrestling match.
One more thing about my dad. He was colour-blind. That usually doesn’t matter. And he was a fairly
conservative kind of person. For instance, he bought our new home out in the country and objected immediately to
the stucco (灰泥) being a pale peach colour. Way too “flashy” for Dad. He hired a painter to cover up all that peach
with a nice, not-flashy grey. Dad was fond of grey anyway.
And so, we arrived at the Saturday morning when Dad sprang out of bed as bright-eyed as ever, felt restless,
and looked around for something that needed doing. Mom was sound asleep, as usual. My brother and I slept in a
bit. There was nobody around to keep an eye on Dad and whatever he decided to do next.
So, Dad decided that the porch (门廊) on our newly grey house needed a fresh coat of paint. He headed off
to the hardware store to get paint and painting supplies. He did not tell any of us. Nor did he invite any of us along.
We’ve never been sure what happened at the hardware store. Did he ask for advice? Did he study colour
samples? Did another shopper help him choose? Who knows? But we’re all pretty sure that Dad had no clue what
colour he was painting the wooden porch. My brother and I woke up, wondered where Dad was, and went looking
for him.

【参考范文】
We froze in our tracks when we stepped outside. The porch, which had been a dull grey, was now a shocking,
bright pink. It wasn’t just pale pink -- it was a glow-in-the-dark pink, a be-seen-for-miles pink, a stop-your-car-to-
stare pink. For a moment, we simply stood there, caught between disbelief and silence. After realising what had
happened, we made a quick dash for Mom. Still half-asleep, she rushed out in her robe and slippers. Fairly
satisfied, Dad turned around with a wide grin and asked for our comments on his “masterpiece”.
Looking at the bright pink porch, we three exchanged looks, unsure how to tell him the truth. At last, Mom
stepped forward and gently told Dad that the porch was not grey, but pink-bright, unmistakable pink. Dad froze, his
grin collapsing as he narrowed his eyes at the porch. Then, instead of anger, a soft laugh escaped him. The rest of
us joined in, relieved. From that day forward, Dad never chose paint colors again, and the pink porch remained
untouched-a gentle reminder of both his impatience and his good humour, and a memory we carried with affection.

Every time we went to Lehman’s store, I would rush straight to the same shelf. There it was: a brown little
guy with a large nose that fit perfectly over my shoulder. I hugged the brown stuffed aardvark ( 土豚) doll tightly
and whispered, “Hi, Artie.”
Last week, my mother finally noticed. “Why do you always disappear?” she asked at checkout. “Next time,
your brother is going with you.”
Oh, no! My brother, Rich, was going to accompany me into the store. He would watch me and report
everything to our mother.
Anyway, I wasn’t going to give up seeing my precious Artie. So, when Rich and I walked into the store
together, I advised him to get the daily groceries, since he was older. He agreed but said I shouldn’t go off to look at
the cosmetics (化妆品), as I wasn’t allowed to wear them yet.
He needn’t have worried about that; I was already heading toward Artie. There it was, awaiting me. I
grabbed it and hugged it tightly. Just then, I heard my brother: “What in the world are you doing?”
“This is Artie,” I said. “I hug it every single time I come here. Don’t tell Mom. I know we can’t afford it, and
I hope it doesn’t get sold, because I just love this little guy.”
The look on Rich’s face was unreadable, but I knew deep down that he wasn’t going to make fun of me. In
fact, a few times when he accompanied me to the store, he said, “Go on and hug your ugly animal, if it’s still there,
and I’ll get the groceries.”
One day before Thanksgiving Day, Rich was working with Dad somewhere, so Mom took me to Lehman’s
but waited outside. “You go in by yourself,” she said. “My legs are tired today. Just don’t take forever, okay?”

I rushed straight to Artie’s shelf, but it was gone. My heart dropped and panic surged through me. I searched
up and down each aisle, my hopes fading with every empty spot. A kind clerk who noticed my distress said gently,
“That aardvark doll was sold yesterday.” Tears blurred my vision. How could Artie be gone? Heartbroken, I
stumbled out of the store, forcing a smile to Mom who was waiting for me outside. “Is everything alright?” Mom
asked. “Nothing much,” I mumbled, hiding my trembling lip.
On Thanksgiving Day, as we were allowed to open one present, Rich walked up. He held out a small,
clumsily wrapped box. “It’s for you,” he whispered. Surprised and curious, I carefully unwrapped it, and there
lay Artie! I gasped, speechless with emotion. Rich grinned, “I bought him with all my savings. Now he’s yours
forever.” Overwhelmed with joy, I hugged him tightly, with tears streaming down my cheeks. It wasn’t just a
stuffed aardvark doll, but a gift of pure love from my family. It was the best Thanksgiving gift forever.

When the shrill (尖锐的) ring of the phone echoed (回响) through the living room, Jane was still sleeping.
She slowly opened her sleepy eyes and looked at the clock on the bedside table. It was already nine o’clock!
Though still sleepy, Jane knew she had to get up because her mother had been working in her office day and night
for several days, and she couldn’t expect her younger brother Tom, who was sleeping like a pig, to answer the
phone. She quickly put on a coat and dashed into the living room. As she picked up the receiver, on the other end
came the warm greeting, “Good morning, my dear!”
It was the voice of her father, a seaman who seldom returned home due to his duties, earning money to
support the family. On hearing her father’s voice, Jane’s sleepiness disappeared.
Born in a not-so-rich family, Jane and Tom felt the stress of life, but they were happy to enjoy the family
atmosphere (氛围). At school, they were straight-A students and took part in various after-school activities, earning
the pride of their parents.
“Good morning, Dad. Why are you calling so early on a weekend?” Jane asked, pretending to be slightly
annoyed. “Tom and I have been very nice recently.” “My dear, today is your mother’s birthday. I have ordered a
cake online and it will arrive at our doorstep in the late morning. Do remember to take the cake. It is my surprise
for your mother.”
Upon hearing her father’s words, Jane felt a twinge of embarrassment (尴尬). How could she have forgotten
such an important day!
While chatting with her father, Jane’s eyes wandered around the room, and she saw a lot of dirty clothes
scattered (散落) on the sofa. The floor hadn’t been cleaned for a few days, since her mother had been too busy with
work to deal with such housework.
Looking at the clock again, Jane realized she still had enough time to prepare a surprise for her mother.
“Well, Dad, now I’m going to wake Tom up. We will give Mum a surprise, too!” Jane said and hung up the
telephone.
Jane hurried to Tom’s room and shared her plan with him.

Jane hurried to Tom’s room and shared her plan with him. After listening to Jane, Tom readily accepted her
idea. The big cleaning plan began. Jane collected the clothes from the sofa and began to do the laundry. Meanwhile,
Tom was busy cleaning the floor back and forth with all his strength, really aware of what tiring work his Mum
had at home! One hour later, the cleaning work was finally finished. They even prepared a simple breakfast for
Mum. With everything ready for the big moment, they knocked at their mother’s bedroom door excitedly.
“Happy birthday, Mum!” Jane and Tom shouted when their mother opened the door. Confused and
surprised, Mum stood frozen. When Mum realized what had happened, a warm current rose in her heart. Staring at
the clean floor and the washed clothes, she was moved to tears and hugged them tightly. “It is the best birthday gift
I have ever had!” Mum said proudly. Around 11 a.m., another surprise — the cake that Dad had ordered — arrived
as well. Mum took out her smartphone, took a picture of the three of them eating the cake happily, and sent it to
Dad. What an unforgettable birthday for her!

Ray and Tatu were two close friends. The two shared a deep bond of friendship. They spent countless hours
together.
One day, Ray brought his prized stamp collection to school, eager to show Tatu his latest treasure — unusual
stamps gifted by his uncle Tatu. Tatu was surprised at the collection, his eyes wide with wonder. “These are
amazing, Ray!” he said, his voice filled with admiration. After school, Ray carefully packed the stamps back into
his bag, ensuring each one was safe, and returned home, his heart light with the joy of sharing his passion with his
best friend.
However, the next morning, Ray’s joy turned to panic when he discovered that one stamp was missing. He
searched every corner in his room, and even the pockets of his school uniform, but the stamp was nowhere to be
found. His heart sank as a troubling thought went into his mind — Tatu had been the only one who had seen the
stamps up close. Could he have accidentally taken it?
The next day at school, he found Tatu and asked directly, “Did you take my stamp?” His eyes searched
Tatu’s face for any sign of guilt. Tatu, taken aback by the question, replied with a mix of shock and hurt, “No, Ray!
I would never take something that belongs to you. You’re my best friend!”
But Ray couldn’t let go of his doubts. “You were the only one who saw it,” he said coldly. “If you didn’t take
it, then where is it?” Tatu, deeply hurt by Ray’s lack of trust, turned away without another word.
The days that followed were filled with an uncomfortable silence between the two friends. They avoided
each other, the once-strong bond destroyed by the loss of the stamp.

Meanwhile, Ray continued to search for the stamp. He turned his room upside down, checked every book, and
even retraced his steps from school, determined to find the missing treasure. Just as he was about to give up, he
found the stamp tucked inside a notebook he had used that day. Relief washed over him, but it was quickly replaced
by a wave of guilt. He realized how wrong he had been to accuse Tatu, and the weight of his actions pressed
heavily on his heart. Determined to make things right, Ray rushed to Tatu’s house, stamp in hand, ready to
apologize.
Tatu smiled gently and extended his hand. “Friends?” he asked, his voice soft but sincere. Ray shook his hand
firmly, his eyes filled with regret. “Always,” he replied. “I’m so sorry for doubting you. I should have trusted you
from the start. ” Tatu nodded, his smile widening. “I’m just glad you found it,” he said. The two hugged, their bond
restored. From that day on, their friendship grew even stronger, as they learned the importance of trust and
communication.

The Forest’s Second Chance
The forest bore the clear, painful scars of a recent, fierce battle — not with guns, but against raging flames.
Three months back, a wildfire tore through the area with terrifying force, leaving a landscape of hopelessness and
destruction.
The once lively, thick woodland now lay in complete ruins. Burnt tree trunks stood like bony skeleton
fingers. Their blackened wood felt rough and uneven to the touch. They stuck out like broken bones, reaching
uselessly toward the gray, smoke-filled sky, as if making a last, helpless appeal. Tiny, weak flames still glowed in
the narrow gaps between the trunks, like faint orange glimmers swaying gently, threatening to burst into a roaring
blaze again.
The ground, once soft with moss and full of colorful wildflowers — purple clover dancing in the wind and
bright yellow daisies nodding — was now a hard, dry layer of ash. Stepping on it, the ash crumbled into fine,
powdery dust that stuck to shoes, leaving light gray marks like disaster trails. It had a sharp smell that stung the
nose and made eyes water. The air was thick with the lingering bad odor of burning wood, and a dead silence
prevailed. The usual happy bird chirps, once filling the forest with life, were gone, leaving it in a strange, lonely
quiet.
That silence was shattered when the volunteers showed up. Many covered their mouths with hands, tears
streaming down. Maria, the volunteer leader, her fingers trembling as she brushed ash off a scorched sapling(烧焦
的幼苗), whispered in a choked voice, “It was so beautiful here before.”
Old Mr. Henderson, silver-haired and bent, stood staring at the woodland he’d known for 40 years. His
hands shook when touching a blackened tree trunk. Then he sighed heavily, full of grief. “We’ll fix it,” he said,
softly but firmly.

Rolling up their sleeves, the volunteers got to work. Maria divided them into groups: some cleared charred
branches and debris; others carried young saplings with soil-wrapped roots, avoiding warm patches. Mr.
Henderson’s weathered hands dug holes steadily despite the ache. “Plant here, where sunlight reaches,” he said,
pointing to gaps between old trunks. Silent, driven by quiet determination, the only sounds were shovel scrapes
and rustling leaves. By dusk, rows of tiny green shoots stood amid the gray—a fragile hope.

A week later, a true miracle unfolded before their eyes. Saplings sprang to life, leaves glowing bright green.
Wildflowers pushed through ash, petals faintly purple and yellow. A woodpecker tapped a charred trunk, its call
echoing. Maria brushed ash off a sprouting fern, voice trembling with joy. Mr. Henderson smiled, eyes wrinkling
gently. “It’s coming back,” he whispered. Scarred but unbroken, the forest took fragile steps toward renewal, a
living promise that hope takes root even in the darkest of ashes.
