华十校高三上学期11 月考试)
Jessica breathed in the familiar smell of dried grass and horses when entering the building for horses. She
was back for another summer at Green Meadow Farm’s riding camp. Her advisor, Rose, walked beside her. Jessica
searched every corner, hoping to see Piper, her favourite horse she had bonded with last year. They had even won
second place in the annual obstacle course race (障碍赛跑) , where Piper had skillfully moved through the poles.
Jessica loved everything about Piper, from her gentleness to the way Piper’s soft nose tickled (使发痒) her hand
whenever she fed her apples.
“I can’t wait to ride Piper,” Jessica told Rose. Rose smiled. “I know you love Piper, but we need to save her
for some new riders.” Jessica’s heart sank, but she nodded in understanding.
“How about you try riding Harley?” Rose said. Jessica was a little frightened by the giant male horse Rose
pointed to. Even though Harley was beautiful with his shiny hair, he looked restless. Rose could sense Jessica’s
anxiety. “Don’t worry. He just needs an experienced rider to help train him.”
Jessica cautiously approached him, but Harley moved away. As Jessica touched his back, he appeared
restless and let out a loud cry, making Jessica even more nervous. An annoyed Jessica led an unwilling Harley
outside. She climbed on top of him and headed to the obstacle course. However, when reaching the fence, Harley
planted his feet in the dirt, refusing to take another step.
The first few days together were full of challenges. Harley refused jumps, galloped (飞奔) out of control,
and once, frightened by a bird, he even went up on his back legs and threw Jessica into the air. Feeling painful and
discouraged, she turned to Rose. “I really miss Piper and her gentleness. Harley is too hard to control.” Patting her
on the shoulder, Rose said thoughtfully, “It’s okay to be scared, but do remember Harley has his own fears. If you
are nervous, you will make him nervous. If you are confident, he will feel confident. If you show him trust, he will
trust you.”

We all like to think that we have all the time in the world, but do we really? This question stayed in my mind
as I faced the tough situation of nearly losing my father. That unforgettable experience taught me a lesson about the
shortness of life and the importance of treasuring every moment with our loved ones.
Our family was a tight unit built around my father’s work as a truck driver — he spent long hours on the
road delivering goods across the state, but always made sure to be home for Sunday dinners. Dad was more than
just a provider; he was the backbone of our family, the one who fixed broken bikes and reminded us daily that
“hard work and heart can get you through anything”. We’d grown used to his routine — leaving in early mornings,
returning in late evenings — and never thought twice about how delicate those moments of togetherness might be.
It was a quiet morning in September when my life took an unexpected turn. Around 3:30, a gentle whisper in
my ear awakened me from sleep, “Judy, Judy, wake up.” Half-asleep and confused, I found myself staring at my
aunt Eva, who was standing over me. “Aunt Eva, are you really here, or am I dreaming?” I asked, trying to
distinguish reality from a dream. Her response was both relieving and alarming, “Yes, it is me. Everything is going
to be OK. You just need to get up, get dressed, and help your little sisters get ready.” Despite her attempts at
calmness, I could tell for sure the seriousness of the situation from the tremble in her voice.
As soon as we were ready, we piled into Aunt Eva’s car, still confused about the unfolding events. “Where
are we going? Where are my mom and dad?” I asked. Aunt Eva, trying to maintain her calmness, replied, “I am
going to take you to them. Just have a short sleep, and I will wake you up when we are there.” The 30-minute drive
to Memorial Hermann Hospital felt almost like a century. As we eventually entered the emergency room, I saw my
mom crying softly over there.

庆市高三上学期第一次模拟)
One day, Olivia and Emily were dining in a pizza shop when a cartoonist nearby draw a caricature (漫画像)
for Olivia with a few quick simple lines. The head was twice as big as the body and the ears were almost as big as
the head. It was funny but looked just like Olivia. When holding up the picture for Emily to see, Olivia advised
Emily to have herself drawn. But Emily shrugged and declined, mentioning that she hated others joking about her
appearance. She had tolerated too many lighthearted “jokes” about her freckles(雀斑) since childhood. Each joke
amused others but hurt her.
Olivia liked the drawing and wished she could draw as well as the cartoonist. Emily told Olivia she was a
good artist and encouraged her to draw a cartoon for the school art exhibition. “A cartoon? No way. I can’t draw
like that,” said Olivia. “Well, not yet, but maybe someday you can,” Emily responded. Encouraged by Emily’s
confidence in her, Olivia decided to make a change. That evening, she took out a fresh page, found a photo of a
person and began to sketch. It turned out terribly.
But Olivia didn’t lose heart and practised hard the following days. She practised every evening for two
weeks. She even bought a book about caricatures and learned some of the secrets: Exaggerate the main features.
Leave out parts that aren’t important. Keep everything simple. Soon she could use a few lines and shapes to draw a
funny caricature just like the cartoonist did.
With the art show coming, Olivia decided to sign up for it and draw someone nobody had drawn before —
Emily, her best friend. She immediately set to work. She was so satisfied with the cartoon that she thought she had
a chance to win first place. To give Emily a surprise, Olivia kept it a secret from her. On the opening day, the art
exhibition attracted many students, including Emily, who was looking forward to Olivia’s amazing drawing and
ready to applaud her.

德市五校教学联合体高三上学期11 月期中)
It was our twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. To celebrate, my husband George and I took a short trip to the
nearby mountains. We loved the peace of nature, and the autumn colors — golden leaves, crisp air, and quiet trails
— made the journey special. Packing a small picnic, we set off along a forest path covered with fallen leaves,
laughing as we remembered our early years together.
Halfway up, I slipped on a wet, mossy rock. I cried out, and George quickly caught me before I fell hard.
“Are you okay?” he asked, holding me tightly. I tried to stand, but a sharp pain shot through my left ankle. “Just a
twist,” I said, not wanting to ruin our day. “I can manage.” But by morning, the pain had worsened. Even with help,
I could barely walk. We decided to return home early.
At the hospital, the doctor examined my ankle and ordered an X- ray. While waiting, the silence felt heavy. I
thought of my mother’s long illness — how a small issue had led to months of worry. George sat beside me, quietly
holding my hand. His calm presence steadied me, though I saw concern in his eyes.
Later, the doctor returned with a serious look. “The X- ray shows something unusual near the joint. We need
more tests to understand it fully.” My heart sank. That night, I was admitted for observation. Lying in the pale blue
hospital bed, I stared at the moonlight through the window, its cold light doing little to comfort me.
Then, through the thin wall, I heard a soft voice from the next room — broken with pain and fear. “I just
want to get better…” It was a girl, her voice sounding no older than my own students. It called up what I always
told my students: We can’t control what happens, but we can choose how we respond. At that moment, my own
worries quieted. A deep urge grew within me — not just to face my own challenge, but to somehow reach out to the
frightened girl. It was as if I had suddenly found the courage to face the upcoming test results.
