It was the hottest time of the dry season. We hadn't had any rain for almost a month. The crops were dying. The cows stopped giving milk. The streams had dried up. If we didn't get rain soon, we would lose everything.
One day, I was making lunch in the kitchen when I saw my six-year-old son, Billy, walking toward the woods. He moved very slowly and carefully, and then disappeared into the woods. A few moments later, he came out, running toward the house. Then he walked back to the woods again. That went on for over an hour. Finally, my curiosity got the best of me. I followed him quietly.
Billy was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked. He was very careful not to spill the water he held in them. Tree branches hit his face, but he didn't try to avoid them. He had a bigger purpose!
I stopped to look in, and saw the most amazing scene. Several large deer were in front of him. They looked threatening, but Billy still walked right up to them. Then I saw a baby deer lying on the ground. It was weak from heat and thirst. It lifted its head with great effort and drank the water from Billy's hands.
I stood there watching my son save a life with his kind heart. Tears rolled down my face and fell to the ground. Then they were suddenly joined by other drops... and more drops... and more.
