In 1986, I watched my first soccer match on my parents’ big box television. I was six, and ever since then, I
have dreamed of attending the World Cup.
This year, I traveled to Brazil to make my dream a reality. The first match I attended was between Australia
and Spain. Within minutes of walking into the stadium, I found myself surrounded by the excited fans, talking and
cheering together. Unlike what one normally sees on the news, this match was mainly peaceful except for one fight.
When the fight started, the whole section began chanting(呼喊)with one voice, asking those fighting to stop. When
they didn’t, the rabble-rousers were sent out by security guards minutes later.

countries. Sometimes we were cheering for the same team and sometimes for opposite teams, but that didn’t stop us
from becoming friends. The stands were not divided between teams, and the interaction was often spirit-lifting.
I also watched the game in Sao Paulo that ousted(淘汰)Brazil from the World Cup. I was with friends at a
large bar which hosted a mix of Brazilian and German supporters. As Germany scored one goal after another, the
sadness and even tears were visible on the faces of Brazilians. But German fans came to the Brazilians to comfort
them and apologize that the game was ending with such a big gap. Everyone was hoping for a good match.
What I love about the World Cup is that it provides a chance for people to learn about other countries and
cultures. People learn about the countries of the teams they support and about their opponents’ history and culture.
Soccer is a game that not only gives people the chance to learn about each other but also has the potential to unite
people.
Sports can be a dividing force, but the true spirit of sports is about unity and fun. The matches at this World
Cup have been exactly that so far, and I hope it remains so.

Everybody loves a fat pay rise. Yet pleasure at your own can disappear if you learn that a colleague has been
given a bigger one. Indeed, if he has a reputation for being lazy, you might even be shocked and angry. Such
behaviour is regarded as “all too human”, with the assumption that other animals would not be capable of this
finely developed sense of grievance (不满). But a study by Sarah Brosnan and Frans de Waal of Emory University
in Atlanta, Georgia, which has just been published in Nature, suggests that it is all too monkey, as well.
The researchers studied the behaviour of female brown capuchin monkeys (僧帽猴). They look cute. They are
good-natured, co-operative creatures, and they share their food readily. Above all, they tend to pay much closer
attention to the value of “goods and services” than males.
Such characteristics make them perfect candidates for Dr. Brosnan’s and Dr. de Waal’s study. The researchers
spent two years teaching their monkeys to exchange token (代币) for food. Normally, the monkeys were happy
enough to exchange pieces of rock for slices of cucumber. However, when two monkeys were placed in separate
but neighboring rooms, so that each could observe what the other was getting in return for its rock, their behaviour
became obviously different.
In the world of capuchins, grapes are luxury goods (and much preferable to cucumbers). So when one monkey
was handed a grape in exchange for her token, the second was reluctant to hand hers over for a mere piece of
cucumber. And if one received a grape without having to provide her token in exchange at all, the other either
threw her own token at the researcher or out of the chamber, or refused to accept the slice of cucumber. Indeed, the
mere presence of a grape in the other chamber (without an actual monkey to eat it) was enough to lead to
resentment (抱怨) in a female capuchin.
The researchers suggest that capuchin monkeys, like humans, are guided by social emotions. In the wild, they
are a co-operative, group-living species. Such co-operation is likely to be stable only when each animal feels it is
not being cheated. Feelings of righteous indignation (义愤感), it seems, are not the preserve of people alone.
Refusing a lesser reward completely makes these feelings abundantly clear to other members of the group.
However, whether such a sense of fairness evolved independently in capuchins and humans, or whether it
originates from the common ancestor that the species had 35 million years ago, is, as yet, an unanswered question.

While teenagers who are at risk of depression with risky behaviors — drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes
and cutting classes often alert parents and teachers that serious problems are brewing, a new study finds that there’s
another group of adolescents who are in nearly as much danger of experiencing the same mental symptoms.

that may sound like a description of every teenager on the planet. But the study wars that it is teenagers who engage
in all three of these practices in the extreme that are truly in a dangerous position. Because their behaviors are not
usually seen as a red flag, these young people have been called the “invisible risk” group by the study’s authors.
The study’s authors surveyed 15,395 students and analyzed nine risk behaviors, including excessive alcohol
use, illegal drug use, heavy smoking and high media use. Their aim was to determine the relationship between these
risk behaviors and mental health issues in teenagers. The group that scored high on all nine of the risk behaviors
was most likely to show symptoms of depression; in all, nearly 15% of this group reported being depressed,
compared with just 4% of the low-risk group. But the invisible group wasn’t far behind the high-risk set, with more
than 13% of them exhibiting depression.
The findings caught Carli off guard. “We didn’t expect that,” he says. “The high-risk group and low-risk
group are obvious, but this third group was not only unexpected. It was so distinct and so larger — nearly one third
of our sample — that it became a key finding of the study.”
Carli says that one of the most significant things about his study is that it provides new early warning signs for
parents, teachers and mental health-care providers. And early identifications, support and treatment for mental
health issues, he says, are the best ways to keep them from turning into full-blown disorders.
