She woke up on Christmas morning and, along with her brother, ran down to see the gifts under the tree. In the living room sat a nice mini bike. It was red with a white gas tank. For a short moment, Lily was filled with great excitement. She couldn’t imagine anything better than getting that bike. Then, her eyes caught sight of a baby doll sitting on the sofa with a huge bow. She knew. She knew that the mini bike belonged (属于) to her brother and that doll would be her Christmas gift. It was always like this. Tommy always got cool things: skateboards, gliders, science kits. The mini bike was just the latest cool thing. Lily always got the boring gifts: a set of toy cooking kits, a pink tutu with silver twinkling stars, a pair of fairy lady’s feather wings. They are amazing for other girls, but she didn’t like them at all. To Lily, this doll seemed unusually boring again. The doll had big eyes with super long eyelashes and straight blond hair. She even wore a petticoat (衬裙). Tommy had seen that mini-bike in the front window of Moore’s Bike Shop, but hadn’t Lily too? Tommy had asked for the bike and had said it was the only thing he wanted for Christmas. Although Lily had the same thought, 第7页/共17页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司the words were on the tip of her tongue, finally she failed to say them, again. She was a shy girl, even in front of her family. Tommy’s eyes grew wide at the sight of the bike. He knew it was his — no doll for him. He ran into his parents’ room and jumped excitedly on the bed. “Thank you, Mama! Thank you, Papa!” he yelled. At the same time Lily walked into the other room silently. She was disappointed and a bit angry. It took a while for anyone to realize she was missing. “What’s wrong, Lily?” Papa asked gently. “Did you see your pretty doll?” “I saw it,” she said unhappily. “What’s wrong, honey? You can’t imagine how long your father waited in line to buy that doll! It was nearly 30 minutes. The shop was always full of people.” Mama said. Silence. Lily’s jaw (下巴) was fixed. Her face was pale. Her hands clenched (紧握).“Oh, Mama, you know Lily is never excited by presents!” her brother laughed. “Come out and watch me ride!” And so they did. However, Lily made a decision after a while. She wouldn’t keep silent any more and she needed to speak out what she really thought. Then, she made a deep breath, walked straightly to her parents’ room. 24. What was Lily’s Christmas gift? A. A mini bike. B. A huge bow. C. A baby doll. D. A gas tank. 25. Lily walked into the other room silently because ________. A. she was disappointed and a bit angry B. she asked for the bike but didn’t get it C. her brother was never excited by presents D. her brother didn’t ask for the bike but got it 26. Communication is the key to understanding. 【答案】24. C 25. A 26. She wouldn’t keep silent any more and she needed to speak out what she really thought. Then, she made a deep breath, walked straightly to her D。 Because of a lack of trained lifeguards to watch over swimming pools, a team of scientists from Germany has developed an underwater robot to help lifeguards in rescuing (救援) swimmers in emergencies. According to scientists, there are some typical postures that you can use to recognize when someone is in danger. The robot has been tested in a variety of settings including indoor pools and open water. If swimmers’ movements are consistent with drowning (溺亡), the information of the drowning person will be sent out, which is stored in a docking station on the pool floor, and it will be released by a signal from the monitoring cameras. Once the robot receives the signal and reaches its destination, it will carry the endangered person to the surface. What’s more, the robot is designed with a set of moving parts to keep the lifeless person from sliding down as the robot surfaces. When the robot is tested at lakes and other outdoor settings, drones (无人机) took on the task of the monitoring cameras. For rescues in swimming lakes where the visibility is limited, the underwater vehicle must be equipped with acoustic sensors (声音传感器). Sound wave echoes can be used to determine people’s positions so precisely that the robot can autonomously head for the target person and pick them up. When the robot is informed of an emergency (紧急情况), a signal will warn the team immediately. “The current system is 90 centimeters long, 50 centimeters high, and 50 centimeters wide and looks like an underwater submersible that might be used for exploring ship wrecks. The central innovation (创新)of the system is the side folding wings that fix lifeless people on a stretcher without injuring them. To bring them to the surface of the water, balloons are filled with a total of 15 to 20 kilos of buoyancy (浮力). The research team are still doing research on the robot, aiming to make future versions smaller, lighter and less expensive. At present, a patent has already been filed for the aquatic robot. In modified versions, it can take on further tasks—such as offshore and dam wall (坝墙)inspections or being used to monitor the health of fish in fish farms. 第9页/共17页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司27. Why did German scientists invent an underwater robot? A. To help lifeguards to rescue. B. To prevent swimmers practicing. C. To check if there are emergencies. D. To watch over the swimming pools. 28. The expression “be released” in Paragraph 2 probably means “______”. A. be sent out B. be controlled C. be taken up D. be delivered 29. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A. A Robot to Build Dam Walls B. A Robot to Prevent Drowning C. A Robot to Protect Lifeguards D. A Robot to Improve Swimmers’ Skills 【答案】27. A 28. A 29. B 【解析】 【导语】本文介绍的是防溺水机器人。 【27题详解】 细节理解题。根据“a team of scientists from Germany has developed an underwater robot to help lifeguards in rescuing (救援) swimmers in emergencies.”可知,为了帮助救生员营救。故选A。 【28题详解】 词义猜测题。根据“If swimmers’ movements are consistent with drowning (溺亡), the information of the drowning person will be sent out, which is stored in a docking station on the pool floor, and it will be released by a signal from the monitoring cameras.”可知,如果游泳者的动作与溺水一致,溺水者的信息将被发送出去,这 些信息存储在游泳池地板上的一个坞站中,并通过监控摄像头的信号发布。因此划线单词的意思是“发 出”,与send out一致。故选A。 【29题详解】 最佳标题题。根据“Because of a lack of trained lifeguards to watch over swimming pools, a team of scientists from Germany has developed an underwater robot to help lifeguards in rescuing (救援) swimmers in emergencies.” 以及通读全文可知,本文讲述的是一款防溺水机器人。故选B。 In a recent study in the U. S. and U. K., Van Tilburg and his team asked people through online surveys to describe the characteristics of a boring person according to someone they knew. Being dull and quiet, having no interests, no opinions and lacking(缺乏)a sense of humor are often mentioned. The researchers then followed up with additional surveys. The results clearly suggest that being considered boring is a negative(负面的)personality characteristic, and is often tied to introversion(内向). 第10页/共17页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司So why are introverts sometimes seen as boring? Maybe because quiet people value their privacy and avoid sharing their everyday life. Their behavior is the opposite of the preference in a culture towards extroversion(外 向). This preference leads to a fixed idea that “quiet” means “boring”, and it reflects a push toward uncontrolled extroversion—just think about people crazily posting nearly everything on social media of their life and activities to attract attention. Another research argued that it might be problematic to overvalue extroversion as more socially preferred than introversion. This wrong idea might start from teenage years when we think having the most friends and being the best-liked means being popular. This type of everyone-agreed popularity may make quiet people see their lack of extroversion as a deficit. In fact, introverts tend to have the “quiet ego(自我)”, which allows them to have the ability to put themselves in other people’s shoes and understand situations from a bigger picture. According to researchers Bauer and Wayment, the quiet ego is a way of explaining the self that goes beyond being “self-centered” by considering both self and others. The quiet ego helps introverts to balance self-focused values, like power and achievement, and other-focused values, such as kindness and care for others. Balancing both values can lead to psychological well-being and life satisfaction. Generalizing introverted people with negative characteristics is false and harmful because introversion can carry many positive influences. In fact, an introverted style can be a strength. This is because introverts are likely to be truer to themselves than extroverts. Moreover, accepting their introversion as a benefit would in turn improve their sense of happiness. There can be a joy to being “boring” that can go along with a quiet, introverted personality. 30. Introverted people are often seen as boring because ________. A. they have no interest in pleasing others B. they refuse to express their ideas in public C. their sense of humor is often difficult to get D. their behavior goes against cultural preference 31. The word “deficit” in Paragraph 4 probably means “________”. A. mistake B. weakness C. symbol D. talent 32. The writer would probably agree that ________. A. extroversion is more socially beneficial B. introversion usually leads to unhappiness C. being extroverted makes people truer to others D. introverted people are likely to get life satisfaction 33. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage? A. To correct a false idea about introversion. B. To discuss different causes of introversion. C. To explain why introverted people are quieter. D. To compare self-focused and other-focused values. 【答案】30. D 31. B 32. D 33. Kayaking is a kind of paddling sport, and people often mistake it for canoeing(划独木舟), but there are some differences. Kayakers sit on the floor of the boat while canoeists sit on a bench. Also, kayak paddles have a wide flat part on either end, but canoe paddles have them on only one end. Within kayaking, there are a few styles that need different levels of skill and fitness. Anyone can enjoy relaxing kayaking, most often paddling on a lake or perhaps a gentle river. Whitewater kayaking is much more exciting because boats travel down fast rivers and even over small waterfalls. Surf kayakers must be both strong-willed and talented as they ride waves on the open ocean. The difficulty involved with kayaking is transportation-a boat several meters long is not exactly easy to carry 第12页/共17页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司around. However, a man who had to leave his kayak behind when moving to a smaller apartment borrowed the idea of Japanese paper folding, and made a new type of special kayak—it can be folded into a very thin pack, allowing the kayak to easily fit in a car. In this way, the problem was perfectly solved. Kayaking can offer sightseeing opportunities and a good way to exercise certain parts of the body. Paddling is helpful for strengthening the upper body and it requires continuing turning of your main body, giving it some great exercise. Another advantage is that these movements are gentler on the body’s joints and tissues(关节和组织) than running. Kayaking doesn’t just improve the health of the body, though—it also has been shown to make you less stressed as well. With so many benefits, why not head to the closest water and give it a try? 34.
