BRoller Coaster Ride
I had never been on a real roller coaster. Fear of speed, fear of heights: They just weren't for me. The closest I had
ever got was a kiddie-coaster when I was six. It was probably six feet tall, but I had it stopped even before we got
up to the first slope.
So today I just waited for my friends while they took the 53 mph roller-coaster-riding. As they stepped off the ride,
they all tried to persuade (说服 ) me to follow them onto the next one. roller coaster

Finally, I gave in and agreed to get on the roller coaster, although I still wasn't sure. Of course everyone had come
out alive so far, but you never know what will happen.
As we stood in line, I got more scared. "It looks really big from down here," I worried out loud. Finally, we reached
the front of the line. I sat in a seat with Jackie and said that I would not let go of her hand until we were safely off
the ride.
As soon as we started moving, I began to scream and held Jackie's hand tightly. We started to climb the slope
toward the highest point of the ride.
WHOOOOSH!
It felt as if something had broken. We started falling fast. The wind blew hard and it seemed like my face would
blow off. I screamed so loud that I couldn't hear myself anymore. Oh my gosh, we weren't going to stop! I knew
it. This had been a terrible idea. I closed my eyes, never stopping my scream.
CLUNK!
The ride came suddenly to a stop. I opened my eyes. We were back where we started! I hadn't died! I stepped off
the ride, tired and dizzy. My friends looked at me, searching for my reaction.
"Can we do that again?" I said in a low voice.

Reading Habits in Transition
Most experts agree that the Internet has totally changed how we read, think, and remember things. However,
whether this transition (转变) has had a good or bad effect is still unknown.
There is proof that we are reading fewer books, especially non-fiction (纪实文学). Let’s say you need medical
advice or cooking instructions. Who wants to buy a 300-page book when you can find a 300-word article on the
Internet about the same subject? It’s easier to read, it’s free, and it’s a lot faster. However, we are, in fact, reading a
lot more overall. In addition to our offline reading, we read online throughout the day as we check our smart
phones, surf the Internet, visit social media sites, and catch up on our e-mail. We also do a lot more skimming (略
读) and scanning (细读) on the Internet than we do when we read physical books or magazines and newspapers.
Before there was an Internet, people spent a lot of time taking notes in libraries. Today, you can just simply
bookmark any page and return to it easily. However, many argue that online information sources often have
mistakes and can’t be trusted, so we need to be more careful when we use them. Some think that the Internet has made it more difficult to focus on one task without getting interrupted by
other things. We are continually interrupted by updates from social media websites and e-mail messages. We follow
links (链接) to other websites where we find more links to other websites and jump from topic to topic. We also get
a lot of junk (垃圾)—for example, news about famous people and advertisements about products we don’t want or
need.
Some consider what we read on the Internet to be junk, while others see many. advantages in the reading we do
on the Internet. Some argue that reading on the Internet is like exercise for the brain, making it easier for us to deal
with interruption and think clearly as we learn to make choices that work for us. In a recent study, a lot of people
agreed that our use of the Internet has actually made us smarter. If you grew up with the Internet, that’s very good
news, in fact.
27. How has the Internet changed the way we read?
A. It makes people read more in their daily life.
B. It offers a chance for people to skim and scan.
C. It makes people choose books over articles.
D. It offers more fictions for people to share.
28. Internet has made it more difficult to focus on one task because_________.
A. there are links for shopping connected with the task
B. the right information is normally hidden among junk
C. various unneeded information often take people’s attention away
D. people need to follow different links to get the right information
29. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To question about the sources of online information.
B. To discuss the problems of reading on the Internet.
C. To state opinions on the effect of reading online.
D. To stress the importance of reading non-fiction.
【答案】27. A 28. C 29. C

D
Say you’re sitting around with some friends playing video games and someone mentions a game that happens
to be one of your favorites. “Oh, that game’s easy. So not worth the time,” one of your friends says. The others
agree. Although you enjoy the game quite a lot, not wanting to argue with them, you go along with the crowd.
You have just experienced what is commonly referred to as peer (同伴) pressure, also called peer influence.
You will adopt a certain type of behavior, dress, or attitude in order to be accepted as part of a group of your
“peers”. As a teen, you are likely to have experienced the effect of peer pressure in a number of different areas.
We are all influenced by our peers at any age. For teens, as school and other activities take you away from
home, you may spend more time with your friends than with your family. As you become more independent, your
peers naturally play a greater role in your life.
According to Dr. Casey from Cornell University, teens are very quick and accurate in making decisions on
their own and in situations where they have time to think. However, when they make decisions in the heat of the
moment or in social situations, their decisions are often influenced by factors like peers. In a recent study, teen
volunteers played a video driving game, either alone or with friends watching. The researchers discovered that the
number of risks teens took more than doubled when their friends were watching, compared with when they played
alone. This shows that teens may find it more difficult to control risky behavior when their friends are around, or in
situations where they are extremely angry.
Just as people can influence us to make unwise choices, they can also influence us to make good ones. A teen
might join in a volunteer project because his or her friends are doing it, or get good grades because his or her
friends think getting good grades is important. In fact, friends often encourage each other to study, or try out for
sports. While we are always influenced by those around us, the decision to act or not is up to us. So, when it comes to
decision making, the choice is up to you.
30. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Teens are eager to be different from their peers.
B. Peer pressure has effects on both teens and adults.
C. Peer pressure does more harm than good to teens.
D. Teens think it challenging to get good grades at school.
31. The words “in the heat of the moment” in Paragraph 4 probably mean ________.
A. when teens avoid possible risks
B. when teens trust their judgment
C. when teens lose control over their anger
D. when teens give consideration to situations
32. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Peer Pressure: Is It Necessary to Deal with It?
B. Peer Pressure: Is It Possible to Get Away from It?
C. Peer Pressure: Its Benefits to Teens and Friend Making
D. Peer Pressure: Its Influence on Teens and Decision Making

四、阅读短文, 根据短文内容回答问题。(共8分, 每小题2分)Why do you feel encouraged when your teacher gives you a smile? How do you know your mother is angry
when she frowns(皱眉)? In both cases, the person is telling us something not with words, but with facial
expressions.
Facial expressions are one or more movements on a person’s face, such as frowning, raising one’s eyebrows
(眉毛), and nose and lip(嘴唇)movements. They express people’s feelings.
Scientists at Oxford University have shown that humans have 80 muscles(肌肉)on their faces. These
muscles can create more than 7,000 facial expressions. However, there are six main kinds of facial expressions that
are common in all cultures: happiness, sadness, surprise, fear, anger and disgust(厌恶).
Facial expressions are very important to communication. One study at UCLA, in the US, showed that in most
conversations, over 93 percent of the communicating is done without speaking.
If people can read facial expressions, they may be better at knowing what other people are feeling, so they can
understand them better. Someone who does not enjoy a certain type of food usually will make a face when he/she
sees or tastes it. A frown means worry or anger. Raised eyebrows and open eyes show surprise.
However, there are some taboos(禁忌)for reading people’s facial expressions.
For example, it is not a good idea to stare at someone for a long time while reading his or her facial
expressions. They may think you are rude.
33. What are facial expressions?
______________________________________________________
34. How many facial expressions can our face muscles create?
______________________________________________________
35. Why are facial expressions important?
______________________________________________________
36. What is the passage mainly about? Besides making facial expressions, what else can you do to show your
happiness?
______________________________________________________
【答案】33. Facial expressions are one or more movements on a person’s face, which express people’s feelings.
