On that day, a spacecraft called Pathfinder landed on Mars. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) sent Pathfinder to discover new information about the Red Planet. The mission was a complete success. After landing, Pathfinder sent a small rover (漫游机器人), Sojourner, onto the planet's surface. Sojourner explored more than 250 square meters of Mars. Together, designed Sojourner to last for only seven days, but little vehicle ran twelve times longer! Pathfinder surprised scientists, too. It sent back information for almost three months. That was three times longer than it was built to last. Because Pathfinder and Sojourner ran for so long, scientists got more information than they ever dreamed of getting. For one thing, they discovered that Mars is very sandy. Pictures of sand dunes around the land site hint that Mars once had water. Scientists know that water means life. Was there ever life on Mars? We don't know yet. In addition, the Pathfinder mission told scientists that Mars is dusty. Huge "dust devils" on Mars spit enormous amounts of dust into the Martian air. Pathfinder also discovered frosty Martian temperatures at 200 degrees below zero Fahrenheit. At that temperature, a glass of water would freeze solid in just a few seconds. In October, scientists lost Pathfinder's signal because the spacecraft's battery had run down. They tried to revive the signal but had no luck. The mission officially ended on November 4.Scientists hope to use the knowledge from these missions to better understand how life on earth began. They will also use it to plan future Mars missions. 27. What did NASA do to get information about Mars? A. NASA sent the spacecraft Sojourner to Mars. B. NASA sent engineers on a three-month space mission. C. NASA sent the spacecraft Pathfinder to Mars. D. NASA sent astronauts to run tests for seven days. 28. What was the main reason NASA considered the Pathfinder mission a success? A. Scientists found out that Mars is very cold and dusty. B. Scientists got more information than they ever dreamed of getting. C. Scientists learned that Mars definitely had water at one time. D. Scientists found out that there was once life on Mars. 29. You can learn from this passage that ________ A. dust devils on Mars made the photographs hard to see. B. Martian temperatures caused Pathfinder's battery to fail. C. scientists suspect that life on Earth began on Mars. D. scientists will look for signs that life existed on Mars. 【答案】27. C 28. B 29. Our lives are always filled with emails and text messages. They make us feel wanted and important, but in a tiring and empty way. Being busy has a dangerous allure(诱惑). If you are busy all the time, it’s hard to sit quietly with your thoughts or to really feel what you’re feeling. Why not let everything become a choice — how we spend time, who we reply to and how much or little we write? Many of us are busy because our self-worth goes up when people make demands(需求)on our time. Why don’t we free ourselves from needing, or even wanting? Why don’t we make the best use of the time and space to be productive in a way that it best serves us? That may be consciously(主动地)keeping ourselves not busy. In fact many great discoveries were made by people who built white space into their day. Imagine asking “How are you?” to one of the most successful people you know like Warren Buffet. I’ve never heard anyone at that level answer “busy” though most people believe they are. What are they doing differently? First, they aim to project an image that things are under control. Second, they actually have things under control. They’ve had excellent staff, implemented(实施)thoughtful processes and they spend time only on critical tasks that require their attention. They make high-level strategic decisions with a large effect. It’s time to end the glory of being busy and spend time setting up processes that make sense, rather than simply working more hours. To do this, you need to change your way of thinking. It’s cool to say you’re busy, but it’s better to be busy helping someone carry a stroller up the subway stairs or busy finishing a book. How to free us from the trend of being busy? Start with small steps. For one day, be mindful of every daily activity. Consider each thing a choice and decide proactively(预先)if it’s necessary or simply a habit you can get rid of or do in half the time. Next, stop saying how busy you are. Then, figure out what you want to achieve with your day and begin doing it. Put your time and energy where you want it to be. 30. What are many of us busy doing every day? A. Sitting quietly and think actively. B. Meeting people’s demands on our time. C. Making great discoveries.D. Takinghigh-level decisions. 31. Why don’t successful people like Warren Buffet answer “busy”? A. Because they value working abilities and attitude. B. Because they focus on attracting excellent workers. C. Because they pay more attention to learning management. D. Because they think well and spend more time on critical tasks. 32. The writer probably agrees that we should ______. A. stop considering each thing a choice B. work more hours to achieve our goals C. answer emails and messages as soon as possible D. be mindful where we want our time and energy to be 33. What is the writer’s purpose in writing the passage? A. To advise us to be freed from the trend of being busy. B. To warn us about the danger of leading a busy life. C. To show us ways to feel good about being busy. D. To tell us how to fit into the busy modern life. 【答案】30. B 31. D 32. D 33. Many of us are busy because our self-worth goes up when people make demands(需求)on our time. 可知 每天我们中的大多数人忙于满足人们对我们时间的需求。故正确 答案为B。 【31题详解】 细节理解题。根据They’ve had excellent staff, implemented(实施)thoughtful processes and they spend time only on critical tasks that require their attention.可知,成功的人们像Warren Buffet 不回答忙碌是因为他们认真思考花了更多时间在紧要的任务上,故答案是D。 【32题详解】 细节理解题。据最末段第三句“ For one day, be mindful of every daily activity.” Max's Good Habit Max reads more than anyone he knows. He loves reading during all of his free time. His friends laugh at him because he would rather read than play video games, but his parents and his teachers are proud of him. They say reading is important, and it will help him learn about the world around him. They also tell him it is a good habit to read on a regular basis. One day Max was reading a magazine article about volcanoes (火山). He told his friends all about volcanoes , and what causes them to erupt (爆发). The very next week his class was told to do a science project. It was to create a poster board with information about volcanoes and to build a volcano model. Guess who everyone wanted in their project group? Max's friends weren't laughing at him any more. Max ended up being in a group with Liz, Anna and Josh. Max made copies of the magazine article about volcanoes so his project partners could read about them too. They also went to the library to look for more information about volcanoes. The group met at Anna's house that night to organize (组织) the information. They all asked Max what he thought was the most important. Then they discussed and decided on the information they wanted to put on the poster board. The next night they met at Josh's house to build their volcano. They used cardboard and modeling clay (黏土). First they made a volcano shape with the cardboard, and then they covered the shape in brown clay. They also fixed red clay to the top of the volcano to make it look like it was erupting. The volcano looked great. Max, Liz, Anna and Josh were very proud of their hard work. When they turned in their project, their teacher was proud, too. Thanks to Max's good habit, they got an A+ on both parts of the project. 34. Does Max love reading during all of his free time? ____________________ 35.
