Faces all around
You may have seen a smiling face in clouds, a shocked face in a green pepper, or an angry face in a car.
Why do we see faces in almost everything?
According to a study by scientists from the University of New South Wales,Australia, this might be
passed down from our ancestors. “It's important in detecting(发现) dangerous animals, " Colin
Palmer who did the study told the school's website.
For our ancestors, seeing different faces quickly could be a matter of life and death. It's more
dangerous not to see the lion's face than to mistake an orange flower for a lion's face. So the brain chooses to
make life-saving mistakes.
Kang Lee from the University of Toronto, Canada, had another explanation.“Humans are social
animals. When we meet each other, we need to know if the other person is a friend or an enemy(敌
人),” he told science website HowStuffWorks. That's why we can not only see“faces”, but also
know if the face is happy or sad.
To understand how our brain works, Lee did an experiment(实验). Traditionally, people have
believed that the eyes see things from the outside world and send that information to the brain.
That's a“bottom-up(自下而上的)”model, according to Lee.
Then Lee asked people to find faces from a series of images(图像). About 34 percent of the
time people said they saw faces when there were actually no faces at all. It showed that when our brain
expects to see something, it can tell our eyes to“see” it.
“This is a‘top-down’ model, which plays a key role in how we experience the world,” said Lee. “A
lot of things we see aren't coming from our sight(所见), but from inside our minds.”
1. Why might we see faces in almost everything, according to Palmer?
A. Because many things are similar to faces in shape.
B. Because it is a way to pass down important information.

C. Because it is easy to mistake things for faces.
D. Because it was a way our ancestors protected themselves.
2. What is the reason why people see expressions on these“faces” according to Lee?
A. To know their own feelings. B. To understand happiness and sadness.
C. To tell friends and enemies apart. D. To care about the feelings of these" faces".
3. According to Lee, what happens when we mistake something for a face?
A. We have seen too many faces. B. Our brain tells our eyes to see one.
C. The eyes send the information to the brain. D. Blood flows“top-down” from our brain.
4. In which section of a magazine or newspaper can you read the text?
A. Health. B. History. C. Science. D. Pop culture.

The Science Behind "The Lychee Road": More Than Just a Movie
A recent film The Lychee Road has not only achieved great success but also offers a
interesting look into the challenges of ancient transportation and storage(运输与储存) of food. The
film, set in the Tang Dynasty, follows a low-ranking official named Li Shande, who is given a
nearly impossible task: to transport highly easily spoiled(易变质的) lychees over a distance of
2,600 kilometers within five days.
This task would have required an understanding of natural ways to keep food fresh far ahead
of its time. Lychees, once picked, begin to go bad quickly because of exposure(暴露) to air and
warmth. In ancient times, people might have used natural cool materials like ice or wet cloth to
slow down this process, but such methods were limited and not always effective.
The film quietly shows the chemical change and physical processes involved in food going bad. For
example, when fruits are exposed to oxygen, a chemical reaction occurs, leading to browning and loss of
freshness. Additionally, tiny organisms ( 微 生 物 ) grow faster in warm conditions, making
transportation even more difficult.
Modern audiences may not realize that the story, though fictional, is based on real historical
limitations. Without advanced technology, people had to rely on cleverness and a deep knowledge of
nature to solve such problems. The Lychee Road thus serves not only as entertainment but also as a hidden
lesson in ancient practical science.
Director Dong Chengpeng, also known as Dapeng, successfully mixes historical story with hidden
science themes, making the film both educational and attractive. Its success shows a growing public
interest in stories that mix cultural history with intellectual depth(思想深度).
1. What is the main purpose of the article?
A. To talk about the actors in The Lychee Road.
B. To explain the science problems shown in the film.
C. To tell us about the director's past films.

2. The words "easily spoiled" in Paragraph 2 are closest in meaning to ________.
A. very valuable
B. quickly going bad
C. very heavy
D. safe to eat
3. According to the passage, what causes lychees to decay quickly?
A. Not enough sunlight.
B. Air and warm weather.
C. Being washed with water.
D. Moving them a long way.
4. Which of the following is an OPINION rather than a FACT?
A. The film is about the Tang Dynasty.
B. Lychees start to go bad after picking.
C. The film is both fun and teaches you something.
D. A chemical change makes fruits turn brown.
5. What can we guess about the director's intention?
A. He wanted to make a science film about food.
B. He tried to mix history with science ideas.
