Many people are talking about the Panama
Canal(巴拿马运河) these days.This canal is in the
Republic of Panama, but US President Donald Trump
said that he wants to take control of(接管) the Panama
Canal. Why does Trump want it so much?
The Panama Canal is a man-made river. It cuts through Panama and joins the Pacific and
Atlantic oceans(太平洋和大西洋). The canal is about 81kilometers long. Every year, around
14,000 ships travel through the canal. And it's expensive! A ship may need to pay
over1,600,000 yuan to go through the canal once.
These ships carry over 200 million(百万) tons of goods(货物), making up five percent
of global trade. More than two-thirds of these goods either come from the US or are going
there. This might be a reason why Trump wants the canal.

A Film Helps Us Remember History
A powerful new Chinese film about the Nanjing Massacre has deeply moved people across the country. It

The movie, Dead To Rights, tells the story of a group of Chinese people hiding in a photo shop during the
war. To stay alive, they must help a Japanese soldier develop his photos. However, they soon find out that
the photos show terrible things done by the army. They decide to keep the photos secretly and try to send
them out, hoping the world will learn the truth.
The film is known for its strong emotional power and true-to-life story. It has received a high score of 8.6
out of 10 on Douban, a popular website for film reviews. Many people said the film made them think deeply.
One viewer wrote online that he took his children to see the film. He said, "I want them to understand real
history, which is even harder than what we see in the movie. We must never give up our land!"
Another moving story was about a girl who asked her mother if there was any special scene after the film
ended. The mother replied, "The real special scene is the peaceful life we have now when we walk out of the
cinema." This helps us remember to value the peace we have today.
By its third day, the film had already made over 400 million yuan. It is expected to earn much more,
showing that many people are interested in remembering history through films.

One day, a businessman called Guo from Fujian province received a WeChat video call from a
“friend” who asked him to transfer money. After verifying (验证) the face and the voice of his
“friend” with a video call, he transferred money.
It turned out to be a fraud (诈骗), however. The scammer (诈骗者) used artificial intelligence
(AI) to make a person look and sound like Guo’s real-life friend. Guo was scammed out of 4.3
million yuan in only 10 minutes.
The case has raised heated discussions on AI fraud. In today’s world of AI, voices, images
and videos are all likely to be deeply synthesized (合成). And some people use it for criminal
purposes. People who are not aware of scammers, such as children and seniors, are especially in
danger of such high-tech fraud.
AI fraud is harder for people to identify. People have to be more aware of personal information
protection. Don’t be so quick to give out images of faces and fingerprints to strangers.
Teenagers should particularly be careful when using social media accounts and logging in (登录) to
video games to prevent their private information from being stolen.
The government is taking action to stop cases of AI fraud. In November 2022, it made clear
existing bans (现行的禁令) on the generation and replacement of human faces, as well as on the
creating and copying of human voices.
