the daughter glanced over and momentarily regarded her mother. And slowly, almost reluctantly, she placed her arm

Chester said his father told him he had tried to search for him and his brother, but both brothers had
changed their last names. “He does remember me and my older brother and he told me that he’s been
looking for us ever since we lost contact,” he said. Chester said his brother has since flown to
Colombia to be reunited with Urrea as well. When asked how the reunion with his father will change his
life, Chester said, “I got family everywhere, so it might lead to many more trips now.”
Urrea
团聚了。当被问及与父亲的团聚会如何改变他的生活时,Chester 说,“我的家人无处不在,所以现在可

What was most fascinating about the reunion is that Shavi also moves others. Nina’s family had moved
to a bigger apartment. “I’ve heard amazing stories about dogs’ loyalty, but I never imagined this sort

to find us,” said Nina,“I would never give this kind of friend away again. I never grow tired of
repeating this—animals are the most devoted and loving creatures. They need our love and care.”

【2021新高考1卷】
A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day.
How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French
toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff
knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They
decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the
French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into
the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going
smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna
threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it
cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge
boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the
stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But
Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she
caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.注意:1.续写词数应为150左右。

【答案】As the twins looked around them in disappointment, their father appeared. Father’s appearing was like a
savior to the two children. Under the guidance of their father, they took positive actions and started all over again.
They made the bread and then went on cooking porridge. Father helped them adjust the fire, which was the key to
success. It was all right this time. Delicious breakfast was ready. How happy they were!
The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up. When their mother saw the delicious and
perfect breakfast in front of her, she was very surprised. It was not only the gift, but the love of the children for her
that moved her very much. The two children could finish cooking a breakfast, which she didn’t expect. The
children said loudly, “Happy Mother’s Day!” Mother hugged them tightly and kissed them again and again.

Whatever life threw at us each year, come Christmas our family had one constant tradition: our dog Pepper
opened our presents for us. Watching our sweet dog unwrap gifts always warmed the holiday, which was often a
little bittersweet because college, studying abroad, or work commitments often kept my two sisters and me away.
One year, everyone made it home for a Christmas together. I visited from college, Kaci flew in from Arizona,
and Kara was back from Ireland. Mom’s jubilance kept her busy baking cookies for us all. Our Christmas season
should have been perfect.
It couldn’t feel perfect, though, because Pepper’s health was deteriorating. Her life had already been longer
than we expected —she was fourteen —and yet her mind was still sharp. Her enthusiasm for life made us feel
better. But her body could not keep up with her spirit. She’d already shown the usual signs of deafness and
stiffness. That year, her hips and back legs started giving out on her. We knew we would soon have to make a
difficult decision.
It was likely Pepper’s last Christmas, so we decided to make sure she enjoyed it. On Christmas Eve, we
gathered around the tree to open an early present. We each took a turn and then called Pepper to open one more. But
her tangled legs could not navigate the boxes and shredded wrapping paper on the floor. She stumbled over the
obstacles, and soon she disappeared into the next room. She crumpled back to the floor, as out of the way as she
could get.
We were heartbroken. Could Pepper even participate in her last Christmas? Pepper stayed on the periphery of
all our holiday activities. Throughout the day, we gave gifts but did not feel very giving. We shared stories over
cinnamon rolls that tasted bland. We played games by the tree whose twinkles had dimmed. That evening, Kaci said what we’d all been thinking: “I wish Pepper could have helped open presents this
year.” We all put down our mugs of spiced tea. “Maybe she still could,” Kara said. “But there’s none left,” Mom
reminded her. Kara jumped up and left the room. We heard her opening drawers and cabinets in the kitchen.

Edun did not want to go on a hike. She especially did not want to go on a long hike in the mountains that led
to a tiny cabin (小木屋) with no electricity and no running water. She wanted to stay home reading a book instead
while wrapped in a warm blanket.
“Ready?” Mom asked cheerfully after breakfast. Edun looked out the window and only saw rain, lots of it.
“We should go another day,” Edun suggested. “Maybe a hundred years from now.” She worried she would get tired
on the hike. She worried about getting bored at the dark cabin. Mom said it was time to stop worrying and get into
the car.
Edun’s brother, Will, was waiting in the garage, who wore a camera around his neck. Will was four years
older than Edun and had climbed many more mountains. He’d started hiking when he was two and loved it.Because it was raining, Edun had to wear her rain pants, her rain hat, her rain jacket, and her waterproof boots.
Her jacket had a rough material on the inside. She didn’t like how it felt against her skin.
After about half an hour’s drive, they parked at a trailhead (登山口). The rain had stopped but the ground was
still dripping wet. “We’ll be there by afternoon!” Mom promised. The afternoon sounded far away.
Will identified a bird sitting on a nearby branch—“Fox sparrow!”—then he raced down the trail and was
soon out of sight.
Edun rested under a pine tree. “You can’t force me to walk,” Edun said. “You’re right,” said her mom
smilingly, standing under the tree, too, “But you will never know what may lie ahead and amaze us.”

Ariana Porter was very excited. Tomorrow will be anew day and a new beginning, well, kind of. Tomorrow
Ariana will go to a boarding school! No little sister to share a room with, peace and quiet. She ate her favourite
homemade curry for the last time that year. Then, she curled up in her clean bed and shut her eyes. Excited.
The next day, Ariana woke up, jumped into her best clothes and flew downstairs. After a quick breakfast, the
whole family lined up and said their goodbyes. Ariana’s little sister tried to hug her, but she shrugged Liliana off.
And off she went to boarding school. Happy.
However, when Ariana got there, everyone looked unwelcoming. A teacher showed her to her dorm. It was
cold and dark! A few days later, Ariana got several letters. The rainbow one was from her little sister and another
from her parents. Ariana couldn’t even be bothered to open them. She just threw them into the main hall’s fireplace
when nobody was around.
Every day, Ariana tried to make friends. It was an allgirls school. Unfortunately, she had no luck. She tried togive girls gifts, she tried to be friendly, but they shrugged her off just like she did to her sister. Two months passed
trying to find new friends, but without success. Ariana felt more and more lonely. Something was missing in her
life. Something indescribable. Something, or maybe someone.
Week after week went by and then, one day, holding yet another batch of mail, Ariana’s heart trembled. She
realized what she was painfully missing, her FAMILY. Whenever she was down, whenever she needed help or
comfort, they were there for her. Always. This time she opened the little rainbow envelope and smiled. Reading it
filled her heart with joy. Ariana couldn’t reply, for the school didn’t allow that, so she decided to hide the letters
under her pillow. The pile grew larger and they were so important to her, for the letters gave her the greatest
comfort when she was away from home.
Months passed eagerly waiting for the day when the school year ends. No more dorm life and unfriendly girls.
Ariana skipped to math class excitedly, but couldn’t concentrate, she dreamed about going home.

Edward walked slowly past the school blacktop where his older brother, Leon, was playing basketball with hisfriends. Leon didn’t notice Edward until he turned to shoot the ball. Leon really loved basketball and was good at it.
But Edward was another story.
Edward would beg to play with them but Leon’s friends complained a lot. For some reason, in that last game,
Edward’s playing was worse than ever. He couldn’t do anything right. He was completely unable to keep
possession of the ball. He missed even the easy rebounds. His dribbling was useless, and none of his throws were
anywhere near the basket. Leon had to turn his brother away.
Edward was always a whiz at math. He was so advanced that he already knew how to solve long division
problems before he was taught in school. Word problems, even the complicated ones with several steps, were no
problem.
One day, Leon’s math teacher, pulled him aside. “ You need to do better, a lot better, or you’re not going to
pass this class. There’s a big test coming up. ”
Leon’s heart sank. When he got home, he talked with Edward about it. The boys agreed that over the next two
weeks they intended to spend an hour each day after school working on math problems and then an hour playing
basketball.
“Here is a good one,” Edward said and pointed to a word problem. “ Why don’t you read it?”
Leon looked at the book for several seconds. “ I’m dizzy already!” He exclaimed.
“Do you know what the first step is?” asked Edward, “The first step is to stay cool and focused.” Edward
talked Leon through the problem. “Think about what you need to find out. Don’t let the problem trick you.” Step by

Having struggled with financial difficulties for six months and failing to find a way out, I had to close my
technology writing business. Fortunately, I found a new job as a salesperson and soon got a client. At the time, I
wondered if it was too good to be true.
By the second month, something didn’t seem right, and I developed a bad feeling about the client and the
work. When the third month’s check didn’t arrive on time, I sent the client an e-mail to find out what was going on.
But there was no reply. Then I sent another e-mail, and another. The check never arrived, and I never heard from
the client again. With no hope in sight, I hit rock bottom. Panic replaced cautious optimism along with my last self-
confidence.
I hid myself from friends and locked myself in my room. One night, the phone rang. The call was from Eric, a
friend of mine from high school. When he was in high school, he told me many times about his parents’ divorce and
his loss of confidence in the college entrance examination. During the difficult time, I gave him much comfort and
encouragement. Later, he went to college and was always grateful for what I had done.
After the greetings, I told my problems and challenges, hoping my friend would say something comforting.
What I didn’t expect was a string of sharp words. “What is wrong with you? You can do anything you want to do,”
he said. “You are a writer, so start writing. Write for magazine.” “Write for magazine? Are you out of your mind? I

Flora and her dad were going to move to a new house. Friday, a truck would come for the furniture. Then the
next week, workers would dig up the yard. Where Flora and Papi had grown flowers, the workers would put in a
parking lot.
“Our poor flowers,” Flora sighed to herself, looking at the bright purple blooms and soft and green weed
coming out of the soil. She sat outside, selling things she didn’t want to take to the new house. Beside her hung a
sign that said “Yard Sale”. Her yard sale was the first one of the year on Apple Street, and several of her neighbors
had come over to have a look.
Papi came out. He held a dish piled high with nuts. “Here’s a snack for everyone,” he said. Flora’s dad loved
sharing things. Most of all he loved sharing jokes. He smiled when he saw Flora’s sign and winked (眨眼) at the
customers gathered around.
“Yard sale? What are you selling yards of? Or meters of?” he asked. “Ribbons? Carpet? Cloth? Where’s your

“Not that kind of yard,” joked Mrs. Ciro. “It must be this nice grassy yard we’re standing on that’s for sale.”
“How much for the weed by your sign?” asked Mr. Johnson, joking.
Flora gave no response. She didn’t think their jokes were funny. She felt extremely in low spirits at the thought
that the lovely yard was already sold, and soon their poor flowers and weed would be ruined.” Deader than a

With a sigh, Flora dug her heels deep into the grass. But when she felt the soft earth move under her heels, she
knew what she could do.
She whispered her clever plan to Papi. He nodded, smiling, and sat down in her seat instead.注意:

Rivaldo was playing football from the age of 4. When he was 7, he joined a local football club. He attended
the training regularly but never got a chance to play in matches. But the coach had faith in him. He told Rivaldo
that he should focus on hi training, and one day he would get the chance. Rivaldo had no other option but to
continue training in the club. He was training very hard and focused on improving himself.
Even after two years in the club, he never played in a match. He was not even allowed to travel along with the
team. One day their club had a charity match, where a famous footballer was a chief guest. While the team was
planning to travel, one of the support staff who used to take care of kits got ill. So, they needed someone for this.
The coach thought this should be an opportunity for Rivaldo. So, he told him to travel with the team and take
care of the kits. Other support staff objected to it, but he convinced them.
The team reached the stadium. There were a lot of crowds to witness the celebrity footballer. For Rivaldo, this
is his first-time experience in the stadium. He was helping the other players with the kits for the pre-match training.
The coach came for a chat with Rivaldo. He told Rivaldo, “You are playing today.”
Rivaldo, for a moment, got frozen and asked him why. He said, “One of the players from the team got injured
while training. So, we are short of players. We need someone to be in the field to make it 11. But I know you are
more than that. So, go and prove yourself”. There was resistance from the support staff. Luckily for Rivaldo, the
coach, through the organizing committee, convinced Rivaldo’s team management to allow him to play.注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;

When Dr. Henderson was assigning(指定) project mates for his psychology class, I secretly hoped he
would pair me with my best friend or at least a classmate I could have some fun with. Above all, I hoped he
wouldn't assign me to work with the fiercely competitive, extremely serious fellow who always wore dark clothes
and apparently had a personality to match. As fate (命运)would have it, Dr. Henderson very deliberately
matched everyone in class and announced that I would be working with the one person in class I wanted to avoid.
.
I went up to my new teammate and introduced myself He looked at me as though I weren't there. I felt he
treated me as though I would hold him back and probably make him fail to get an A in the course. He wasn't mean
or abusive; he just gave me the impression he could do whatever project we dreamed up better if he did it alone.
Needless to say, I didn't look forward to an entire term of being brushed off, but I tried to make the best of it
and didn't say anything for fear that I would make things worse.
The project required each team to develop a hypothesis (假说), set up an experiment to test the hypothesis,
do the statistical analysis and present the findings. Whatever grade the team received would be shared by both
students. When my teammate and I met to discuss our project, I was uneasy. Here was this challenging student who had
a reputation for single-mindedness and good grades—the exact opposite of me. I was outmatched. I actually wanted
to drop the class at one point, but stopped short because I didn't want to give him the satisfaction of my chickening
out. I decided to stick to it no matter what.
After long discussions we somehow agreed to do a study on the psychological well-being of teenagers. I
wasn't sure what it meant exactly, but at least we had a topic.

It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the
small town were warming up and walking the route(路线)through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was
small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn’t
with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid that kids
from other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, and let
him decide.”
I bit back my frustration(懊恼). I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After
making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking
from side to side as he swung his feet forward.David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his
classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were
doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team.
It just took him longer—that’s all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run

Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

The summer before my eighth grade I was one of a group of boys that a neighboring farmer hired to work
in his field. He explained our basic task, the tractor fired up and we were off, riding down the field
looking for weeds to spray with chemicals. After a short way, the farmer stopped and pointed at a weed
which we missed. Then we began again. This happened over and over, but we soon learned to identifydifferent grasses like cockleburs, lamb's-quarters, foxtails, and the king of weeds, the pretty purple thistle.
It was tiring work, but I looked forward to the pay, even though I wasn't sure how much it would amount

At home, my dad said, "A job's a big step to growing up . I'm glad you will be contributing to the

Pumpkin (南瓜) carving at Halloween is a family tradition. We visit a local farm every October.
In the pumpkin field, I compete with my three brothers and sister to seek out the biggest pumpkin.
My dad has a rule that we have to carry our pumpkins back home, and as the eldest child I have
an advantage﹣I carried an 85﹣pounder back last year.
This year, it was hard to tell whether my prize or the one chosen by my 14﹣year﹣old
brother, Jason, was the winner. Unfortunately we forgot to weigh them before taking out their
insides, but I was determined to prove my point. All of us were hard at work at the kitchen table,
with my mom filming the annual event. I'm unsure now why I thought forcing my head inside the
pumpkin would settle the matter, but it seemed to make perfect sense at the time.
With the pumpkin resting on the table, hole uppermost,I bent over and pressed my head against
the opening. At first I got jammed just above my eyes and then,as I went on with my task,
unwilling to quit,my nose briefly prevented entry. Finally I managed to put my whole head into it,
like a cork(软木塞)forced into a bottle. I was able to straighten up with the huge pumpkin resting
on my shoulders.
My excitement was short﹣lived. The pumpkin was heavy. "I'm going to set it down, now," I
said, and with Jason helping to support its weight,I bent back over the table to give it somewhereto rest. It was only when I tried to remove my head that I realized getting out was going to be less
straightforward than getting in. When I pulled hard, my nose got in the way. I got into a panic as I
pressed firmly against the table and moved my head around trying to find the right angle, but it was
no use. "I can't get it out!" I shouted, my voice sounding unnaturally loud in the enclosed space.

One fall,my wife Elli and I had a single goal:to photograph polar bears. We were staying at a research
camp outside “the polar bear capital of the world”-the town of Churchill in Manitoba,Canada.
Taking pictures of polar bears is amazing but also dangerous. Polar bears-like all wild animals-should be
photographed from a safe distance. When I'm face to face with a polar bear,I like it to be through a camera with
a telephoto lens. But sometimes, that is easier said than done. This was one of those times.
As Elli and I cooked dinner,a young male polar bear who was playing in a nearby lake sniffed, and smelled
our garlic bread.
The hungry bear followed his nose to our camp, which was surrounded by a high wire fence. He pulled and
bit the wire. He stood on his back legs and pushed at the wooden fence posts.
Terrified,Elli and I tried all the bear defense actions we knew. We yelled at the bear, hit pots hard, and
fired blank shotgun shells into the air. Sometimes loud noises like these will scare bears off. Not this polar bear
though-he just kept trying to tear down the fence with his massive paws(爪子).
I radioed the camp manager for help. He told me a helicopter was on its way,but it would be 30 minutes
before it arrived. Making the best of this close encounter(相遇),I took some pictures of the bear.
Elli and I feared the fence wouldn't last through 30 more minutes of the bear's punishment. The camp managersuggested I use pepper spray. The spray burns the bears' eyes, but doesn't hurt them. So I approached our
uninvited guest slowly and, through the fence, sprayed him in the face. With an angry roar(吼叫),the bear ran
to the lake to wash his eyes.

Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She

After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard. “I wish we could help him to earn

“So do I,” said Harry. “We really should do something to assist them.”For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried, “I have a great idea! I
have a solution that we can all help accomplish(完成).”
The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one. “I tell

“I'm going to miss you so much, Poppy, "said the tall, thin teenager. He bent down to hug his old friend

His parents were not quite able to keep theirs under control. They had driven their son several hours out of
town to the university where he would soon be living and studying. It was time to say goodbye for now at least.
The family hugged and smiled through misty eyes and then laughed.
The boy lifted the last bag onto his shoulder, and flashed a bright smile.” I guess this is it, “he said.” I'll see
you back home in a month, okay?"His parents nodded, and they watched as he walked out of sight into the
crowds of hundreds of students and parents. The boy's mother turned to the dog, “Okay, Poppy, time to go back
home.”
The house seemed quiet as a tomb without the boy living there. All that week, Poppy didn't seem interested in
her dinner, her favorite toy, or even in her daily walk. Her owners were sad too, but they knew their son would be
back to visit. Poppy didn't.They offered the dog some of her favorite peanut butter treats. They even let her sit on the sofa, but the old girl
just wasn't her usual cheerful self. Her owners started to get worried. "What should we do to cheer Poppy
up?"asked Dad. “We've tried everything.”
“I have an idea, but it might be a little crazy, “smiled Mom.” Without anybody left in the house but us, this
place could use a bit of fun. Let's get a little dog for Poppy."
It didn't take long before they walked through the front door carrying a big box. Poppy welcomed them home

Parents everywhere praise their kids. Jenn Berman, author of The A to Z Guide to Raising Happy and
Confident Kids, says, “We’ve gone to the opposite extreme of a few decades ago when parents tended to be more
strict.” By giving kids a lot of praise, parents think they’re building their children’s confidence, when, in fact, it
may be just the opposite. Too much praise can backfire and, when given in a way that’s insincere, make kids afraid
to try new things or take a risk for fear of not being able to stay on top where their parents’ praise has put them.
Still, don’t go too far in the other direction. Not giving enough praise can be just as damaging as giving too
much. Kids will feel like they’re not good enough or that you don’t care and, as a result, may see no point in trying
hard for their accomplishments. So what is the right amount of praise? Experts say that the quality of praise is more important than the
quantity. If praise is sincere and focused on the effort not the outcome, you can give it as often as your child does
something that deserves a verbal reward. “We should especially recognize our children’s efforts to push themselves
and work hard to achieve a goal,” says Donahue, author of Parenting Without Fear: Letting Go of Worry and
Focusing on What Really Matters. “One thing to remember is that it’s the process not the end product that
matters.”
Your son may not be the best basketball player on his team. But if he’s out there every day and playing hard,
you should praise his effort regardless of whether his team wins or loses. Praising the effort and not the outcome
can also mean recognizing your child when she has worked hard to clean the yard, cook dinner, or finish a book
report. But whatever it is, praise should be given on a case-by-case basis and be proportionate(相称的) to the
amount of effort your child has put into it.

It’s a really good idea to visit colleges before you apply because their websites can all start to look and sound
the same. Nothing will give you the sense of what it will actually be like to live on a college campus(校园) like
visiting and seeing for yourself the dorms, classrooms and athletic equipment and, of course, the students. It seems
a little crazy once senior year hits to find the time to visit college campuses, and it can also be pricey if the schools
you are applying to happen to be more than a car ride away. But keep in mind that you are making a decision about
the next four years of your life, and do all the research you can to make sure you are making the right one.
There’s no excuse not to visit the schools in your local area. In fact, a lot of college applications even ask if
you have visited campus, and obviously, if you live across the country that won’t be as much of a possibility, but if
you live nearby, go check it out!
If campus visits aren’t going to happen before you apply, at the very least you should find some time between
applying and getting your acceptance letters to visit the schools you’d like to attend. It can save you a lot of
heartache if you rule out now the things that you don’t like about certain campuses, things that you wouldn’t know
unless you actually visit.
Now, if time and money are making it impossible, then check out the online college fairs at CollegeWeekLive. It’s a chance to chat online with admissions officers, students, and college counselors (顾问), and it won’t cost you
a penny! You can register for its online college fair at collegeweeklive.com. While visiting an online college fair
can’t take the place of an actual campus visit, it can be a very useful tool that along with all your other research will
help you make an informed decision about which colleges or universities you’d like to attend.

It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided to take me on a trip

We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late

His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent

early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. "The day starts at dawn on my farm," he said. After
breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens, while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to

In the afternoon, I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a horse ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad went with
me. I wasn’t going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our
horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. "Don’t be late for supper," Uncle Paul cried, "and keep to the
track so that you don’t get lost!" "OK! " my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his farm house were out
of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine trees, and the late

A Vacation with My Mother
I had an interesting childhood. It was filled with surprises and amusements, all because of my mother---loving,
sweet, yet absent-minded and forgetful. One strange family trip we took when I was eleven tells a lot about her.
My two sets of grandparents lived in Colorado and North Dakota, and my parents decided to spend a few
weeks driving to those states and seeing all the sights along the way. As the first day of our trip approached, David,
my eight-year-old brother, and I unwillingly said good-bye to all of our friends. Who knew if we’d ever see them
again? Finally, the moment of our departure arrived, and we loaded suitcases, books, games, camping equipment,
and a tent into the car and bravely drove off. We bravely drove off again two hours later after we’d returned home
to get the purse and traveler’s checks Mom had forgotten.
David and I were always a little nervous when using gas station bathrooms if Mom was driving while Dad
slept: “You stand outside the door and play lookout(放哨) while I go, and I’ll stand outside the door and play
lookout while you go.” I had terrible pictures in my mind: “Honey, where are the kids?” “What?! Oh, Gosh…I
thought they were being awfully quiet.” We were never actually left behind in a strange city, but we weren’t about
to take any chances.
On the fourth or fifth night, we had trouble finding a hotel with a vacancy. After driving in vain for some time,
Mom suddenly got a great idea: Why didn’t we find a house with a likely-looking backyard and ask if we could set
up tent there? David and I became nervous. To our great relief, Dad turned down the idea. Mom never could
understand our objections(反对). If a strange family showed up on her front doorstep, Mom would have been
delighted. She thinks everyone in the world is as nice as she is. We finally found a vacancy in the next town.注意:

wolf. A bright red cloud enveloped the animal, and to Mac's relief, it fell back, shaking its head. But a minute later,
it was by his side again. Then it attacked the back of Mac's bike, tearing open his tent bag. He fired at the wolf a
second time, and again, it fell back only to quickly restart the chase(追赶)。
Mac was pedaling hard now. He waved and yelled at passing cars but was careful not to show down. He saw
a steep uphill climb before him. He knew that zxxk once he hit the hill, he’d be easy caught up and the wolf’s teeth
would be tearing into his flesh.
At this moment, Paul and Beeky were driving their car on their way to Alaska. They didn’t think much of it
when they saw two cyclists repairing their bike on the side of the road. A bit later, they spotted what they, too,
assumed was a dog running alongside a man on a bike. As they got closer, they realized that the dog was a wolf.
Mac heard a large vehicle behind him. He pulled in front of it as the wolf was catching up fast, just a dozen yardsaway now.

One weekend in July, Jane and her husband, Tom, had driven three hours to camp overnight by a lake in the
forest. Unfortunately, on the way an unpleasant subject came up and they started to quarrel. By the time they
reached the lake, Jane was so angry that she said to Tom. “I’m going to find a better spot for us to camp”
and walked away.
With no path to follow, Jane just walked on for quite a long time. After she had climbed to a high place, she
turned around, hoping to see the lake. To her surprise, she saw nothing but forest and, far beyond, a snowcapped
mountain top. She suddenly realized that she was lost.
“Tom! ”she cried. “Help!”
No reply. If only she had not left her mobile phone in that bag with Tom. Jane kept moving, but the farther she
walked, the more confused she became. As night was beginning to fall, Jane was so tired that she had to stop for the
night. Lying awake in the dark, Jane wanted very much to be with Tom and her family. She wanted to hold him and
tell him how much she loved him.
Jane rose at the break of day, hungry and thirsty. She could hear water trickling (滴落)somewhere at a
distance. Quickly she followed the sound to a stream. To her great joy, she also saw some berry bushes. She drank
and ate a few berries. Never in her life had she tasted anything better. Feeling stronger now, Jane began to walk
along the stream and hope it would lead her to the lake.
As she picked her way carefully along the stream, Jane heard a helicopter. Is that for me? Unfortunately, the
trees made it impossible for people to see her from above. A few minutes later, another helicopter flew overhead.
Jane took off her yellow blouse, thinking that she should go to an open area and flag them if they came back again.
