I discovered the wonders of volunteering when I was at school. One day, our teacher presented the topic
“voluntary work”. At first, I thought it was just another normal lesson. Then the pictures she showed us of the
poor hungry children in Africa really hit my heart. She also showed pictures of the homeless people in our town
that sleep in the cold and had no more than a hot soup given by the “Night Watchers”.
Then, our teacher encouraged us to think up a volunteer work project. Plan everything and put it into
practice. Some of my classmates and I decided to help the homeless people. They were part of our community.
First, we visited the “Night Watchers” office and asked for ideas about how to help the homeless people.
They told us since winter was on its way, they were going to need blankets to sleep with.
Great! We decided to start a campaign to collect old blankets. We also asked for socks so that they could have
something to keep their feet warm. We made posters, sent everyone an email and went from classroom to
classroom to explain to all the students what we were doing.
We were able to collect 20 blankets and 60 pairs of socks. That was wonderful. The best part of our project
was when we went with the volunteers from “Night Watchers” to give the blankets to the homeless people. They
