Toucans (巨嘴鸟), a colorful bird. Take a look at these facts about toucans, and you may learn something you
didn’t know before.
Where do they live?
Toucans can be found in the tropical (热带的) forests of South America. Their home is still in danger. The
government asks people not to buy rainforest wood. It’s important to protect the habitat (栖息地) of toucans.
What do they look like?
Toucans have a black body and a white neck. The colorful beak is about 8 inches long. It makes up 1/3 of thebird’s total length. It may look pretty big, but thankfully, for the toucan, the beak is not too heavy. It is made of
keratin (角蛋白), which makes it much lighter than you would think just by looking.
What do they eat and drink?
Toucans use their beaks to eat different kinds of fruits, which happens to be the kind of food they eat most often.
Sometimes toucans will choose to snack on insects, frogs, and the eggs of their birds. Toucans get most of their water
from the fruit they eat, so they don’t need to drink too much water.
Believe it or not!
Toucans can be rather lazy birds and they like to stay in one place generally. They don’t fly high up in the sky
or very far away from home. They enjoy staying in trees with their delicious fruit to eat.
Wild cats are the predators of toucans in the rainforest. Other predators include larger birds. Some snacks may
attack smaller toucans but typically are more interested in the toucans’ eggs instead.
21.How long is a toucan?
A.About 2.5 inches long. B.About 8 inches long.
C.About 11 inches long. D.About 24 inches long.
22.Which food do toucans like best?
A.Insects. B.Eggs. C.Fruits. D.Frogs.
23.The underlined word “predators” in the passage probably means “_________”.
A.Animals that kill and eat other animals. B.Animals that are similar to other animals.
C.Animals that are friendly to other animals. D.Animals that are the food for other animals.
【答案】21.D 22.C 23.A

21.细节理解题。根据“The colorful beak is about 8 inches long. It makes up 1/3 of the bird’s total length”可知,
它的嘴有大约8英尺长,占据了整个身体的三分之一。因此它的整体长度约24英尺长。故选D。
22.细节理解题。根据“Toucans use their beaks to eat different kinds of fruits, which happens to be the kind of
food they eat most often”可知,巨嘴鸟最爱水果。故选C。
23.词句猜测题。根据“Wild cats are the predators of toucans in the rainforest. Other predators include larger
birds. Some snacks may attack smaller toucans but typically are more interested in the toucans’ eggs instead”可推

Sunshine, beaches and coconuts (椰子)—these are why people usually go to Hainan. But more than aparadise (天堂) for travelers and foodies, it’s also a wonderland of plants and animals.
Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park, in the south-central part of Hainan Island, has the most and well-
kept tropical rainforests (热带雨林) in China. President Xi Jinping visited it in April.
The national park covers 4,269 square kilometers, or one-seventh of the island. More than 95 percent of the
park is virgin (原始状态的) forest and is home to 3,653 species of vascular plants (维管植物) and 540 species of
terrestrial vertebrates (陆生脊椎动物).
The park is the only habitat (栖息地) of the world’s most endangered primate (灵长类动物)—the Hainan
gibbon (长臂猿). It’s an uncommon species (种类). They look like monkeys, but have no tails. They live in the trees
their whole lifetimes. Every morning, they whistle loudly to mark their territory (领地). They eat fruits and leaves
from more than 130 plants. The number of Hainan gibbons has increased from fewer than 10 in the 1980 s to 36 in
2022. This shows China’s achievements in environmental protection.
Not just a sweet home to animals, the park is a “live museum” of amazing plants. More than 400 kinds of
plants grow only in Hainan. Cycas hainanensis (海南苏铁) is a wild plant native to the island. With feather-like
leaves, this plant can live to be 200 years old. If it lives in the Yangtze River Basin and North China, it grows almost
without flowers or fruit. But in Hainan, cycas hainanensis plants over 10 years old blossom (开花) and bear fruit
almost every year, thanks to the warm and humid (湿润的) weather.
With so many plants and animals, the biodiversity index (生物多样性指数) of the park—a number to rate
species diversity—is as high as 6.28. It is comparable (可比较的) to the Amazon rainforest in Brazil. That’s why
people call the park a treasure for both China and the world.
24.Paragraph 3 is mainly about ________.
A.an introduction to the park B.the views of the park
C.the news of the park’s opening D.details of rare plants and animals
25.What do we know about the Hainan gibbon?
A.It is a monkey without a tail. B.Its voice sounds like a crying baby.
C.It lives on plants and birds. D.It is a species only found in Hainan.

A.never blossoms and bears fruit B.can only live for 10 years in Hainan
C.lives better in warm and humid weather D.first blossoms when it is 10 years old.
27.Which of the following may be the writer’s opinion?
A.We must start to do something for rare species.B.Human activities will do harm to the rainforest.
C.China has done a great job in protecting the rainforest.
D.We should compare our rainforest with the Amazon rainforest.

In December 2006, a polar bear, Knut, was born at the Berlin Zoo in Germany. The zookeepers didn’t know
that this cute baby bear would cause such big changes for the zoo.
Knut was different from other polar bears in two ways. First, his mother would not care for him or feed him.
So Knut was raised by humans. Second, he was quite playful with people and very easy to take photos with. Knut
became the star of the zoo. Because of Knut, the zoo made more money in 2007 than in any other year. Many visitors
came to see Knut and bought toys, DVDs, and books about him. Newspapers called him “Cute Knut”, and there were
photos of him on magazine covers worldwide.
As time passed, Knut grew bigger. He wasn’t as cute as before. The once-cute baby bear became a full-size
bear, weighing more than 300 pounds! And as Knut grew, his problems came too. He began to cry if nobody stood
near his pen. This was a sign that he became too accustomed to having a group of people around him. Also, zookeepers
could not get close to Knut any more. They were worried that he would hurt them by accident. Knut went on to live
at the zoo, but he was no more a star.

It’s not easy to advertise a thing everyone knows in a new way. But Pippi’s Place Pet Rescue, a volunteer
organization (志愿组织) from America, makes it. It was named after a black cat, Pippi. She was a street cat and then
found a loving family. But at two years old, Pippi was hit by a car and died. Pippi’s Place Pet Rescue then came into
being. The organization runs not for money, but for helping more street cats find a home. How does it do this?
Well, it shows their cats as if they were cars. On its website, people can learn about the cats’ age, color and
other information. Kayla Delcoure, a member of the organization, had this idea when her family was thinking about
buying a car. This is really helpful. Lots of people become interested in these cats. Some people give money to help
these cats live better. A man from Canada came to take an old cat home from the organization.
People give these cats a home, and the cats help make people happy, too. A little girl gets a cat from the
organization. She sleeps with it every night. This makes her feel safe and warm. A woman sees her cat as a good
friend. The “friend” always walks behind her and makes her laugh. Do you want to take a cat from the organization?
Well, before doing it, you’d better learn more about keeping a cat as a pet.
32.Where did Pippi’s Place Pet Rescue get its name?
A.From a family. B.From a website.
C.From a black cat. D.From an advertisement.

C.Buses to Oxford run every half an hour.
D.The Great Wall runs for over 6,000 kilometres.
34.Why does the writer give an example of a little girl in the last paragraph?
A.To show that people and pets are good friends.
B.To show that more and more people keep a cat as a pet.
C.To show that Pippi’s Place Pet Rescue is helpful to cats.
D.To show that cats can help make people warm and happy.
35.What will the writer probably talk about in the next paragraph?
A.Advice about keeping pets. B.Stories about keeping pets.
C.Problems about keeping pets. D.Advantages about keeping pets.【答案】32.C 33.B 34.D 35.A

Many kinds of birds live in the United States, but the number of the birds is becoming smaller every year. One
of the leading reasons is the growing number of pet cats.
37
Of the 90 million pet cats in this country, about two-thirds are allowed to go outside. It is said that these cats kill
hundreds of millions of birds each year, as well as billions of small animals such as rabbits and field mice.
38
They can also bring illness to the animals that live in people’s yard, and further weakening the health of the
natural populations.
39
Allowing pet cats to go outside is also bad for the cats themselves. Outdoor cats can get sick very easily. They
are in danger from traffic and attacks (攻击) from other animals.

have a good time with your cat.

【答案】例文
Everyone knows animals are our friends. So we should be friendly to them. The amount of some animals is
smaller and smaller, such as pandas, golden monkeys and so on. Golden monkeys are in danger now. The number
of them is less than twenty thousand around the world. Because people cut down too many trees, their living space
is getting smaller and smaller. They don’t get enough food to raise their children. The environment is worse and
worse for golden monkeys. Some people even kill them to get money, which will make them disappear soon.
We should let people know the importance of protecting wildlife. Protecting animals means protecting
ourselves! I think our government should punish those people who killed wild animals. It’s our duty to protect the
endangered animals!
Let’s work together to protect the animals from now on.
