(2023·浙江绍兴·统考模拟预测)Eggs-perimenting with eggs
What can you do with eggs other than eat them?
Naked Eggs
What does an egg look like without its shell? You may be picturing the white and yolk in a bowl after
cracking it, but that isn’t the only way to remove the shell.
Materials: an egg, white vinegar, a bowl, a spoon
Directions: Fill a bowl with one cup of vinegar. Add the egg to the bowl, and wait at least 24 hours. When
you check it after a day, you’ll notice some bubbles on the egg and a residue (残留物) in the water. Use the spoon
to gently remove the egg from the bowl. Dump out the old vinegar, and add a cup of fresh vinegar. Return the egg
to the bowl, and wait another 24 hours. When you remove the egg this time, the shell should be completely
dissolved. What remains will be the contents of the egg.
Walking on Eggshells
Can Eggs hold the weight of your entire body?
Materials: six cartons (硬纸盒) of eggs, a garbage bag
Directions: Place the garbage bag on the floor to make any necessary clean up easier. Place the cartons of
eggs into two rows of three. Make sure all the eggs are pointing in the same direction— either all pointy end up or
all rounded end up. Step onto the first carton of eggs carefully. Make sure your foot is as flat as possible and that
you are distributing your weight evenly. If you’re careful, you will succeed. Eggs are actually incredibly strong.
The arch shape at the top and the bottom of the egg allows pressure to be distributed evenly over the egg. If you
were to place the eggs on their sides instead, you’d be likely to wind up with a gooey (胶粘的) mess.
21.In the first experiment, what causes the eggshell to dissolve?
A.Vinegar. B.Water. C.Bubbles. D.Residue
22.What makes the eggs strong enough to walk across?
A.The position of eggs. B.The number of eggs.
C.The weight of eggs. D.The distribution of eggs.
23.What was the author’s purpose in writing this text?
A.To persuade readers to use eggs in new ways.
B.To entertain readers with funny use for eggs.
C.To tell readers some ways to experiment with eggs.D.To inspire readers to conduct experiments carefully.

(2023·云南曲靖·统考二模)Dan Mancina is a skateboarder whose jaw-dropping videos receive hundreds
of thousands of views. He has a loyal following on social media, all eager to see him landing jumps and all sorts
of skillful tricks. Videos of him using his white cane as he boards inspires curiosity and admiration from fans
around the world.
Mancina also happens to be blind. It wasn’t until his mid-20s that his condition — a rare eye disease called
retinitis pigmentosa — started to affect his day-to-day life, stopping him from driving and biking. Eventually he
couldn’t leave the house without a human guide. “I’m honored and hopefully I can be a voice for our community.
That’s why I started my social media stuff, to change others’ perception (看法) of the visually impaired (缺陷),”
the 35-year-old said.
Now, Mancina wants to challenge misunderstandings around blindness and create spaces where visually
impaired people can enjoy the sport. “I wanted to build the first fully adaptive skatepark designed around visual
impairments, so I started a foundation called ‘Keep Pushing Incorporated’ and have been raising money for a few
years,” he said.
Mancina has raised around $40,000 for the park, and after pouring concrete this fall, hopes to be running
skate workshops by next spring and summer. With a spacious layout and tactile ground, Mancina is building the
park with blind schools and other adaptive sports organizations.
“They should have access to everything, just like every other child,” he said. “Skateboarding is just one of
those things. There are going to be those kids who want to skate. However, I noticed a big difference in the way
people treated me as a sighted person compared to a blind person. Some people have lower expectations of what a
blind person can achieve.”
“Some people think it’s crazy and not possible to skate. It’s not that crazy ... in my head. So I encourage
people to think that way — don’t let other people control your life and decide what you can and can’t do. You
know, it’s all up to you,” he added.
24.Why does Dan Mancina post his videos on his social media?
A.Because he wants to teach various skills of skating.
B.Because he needs to raise awareness of eye diseases.
C.Because he hopes to become famous around the world.
D.Because he decides to shift how people view the blind.
25.What is the mission of his foundation called “Keep Pushing Incorporated”?
A.Raising money to cure people’s blindness. B.Building a park for the blind to skateboard.C.Making public places accessible to the blind. D.Making contributions to blind schools.
26.How do some people treat blind people according to Dan Mancina?
A.They treat blind people as sighted people.
B.They show much sympathy for blind people.
C.They have little faith in blind people’s capabilities.
D.They motivate blind people to achieve their dreams.
27.Which of the following can best describe Dan Mancina?
A.Persistent and humorous. B.Diligent and honest.
C.Creative and humble. D.Determined and socially responsible.

(2023·重庆巴南·校联考模拟预测)A diet high in fats and sugars actually affects the parts of the brain
that are important to memory and makes people more likely to desire for unhealthful food, says American
psychologist Terry Davidson.
Davidson didn’t start out studying people’s eating. Instead, he was interested in learning about the
hippocampus(海马体), a part of the brain heavily involved in memory. He noticed something strange when he
studied mice with hippocampal damage. They would go to pick up food more often than the others, but they
would eat a little bit, then drop it.
Davidson realized these mice didn’t know they were full. He says something similar may happen in human
brains when people eat a diet high in fat and sugar. If our brain system is damaged by that diet, that makes it
harder for us to stop eating that diet.
The evidence is growing. In another study by Cambridge psychologist Lucy Cheke, her researchers asked
obese(肥胖的)and thin people to do a memory task, a virtual treasure hunt. The subjects had to hide something
in a scene across various computer sessions(会话框), then they were asked what they hid, where they hid it
and in which session. The obese people were 15-20 percent worse than the thin ones in all aspects of the
experiment.
Cheke says with the link between obesity and the brain growing as a field of research, we could see more
ways of targeting obesity. For example, if the problem is that obese peopled diet degrades their memory, perhaps
making peopled meals more memorable would help them eat less bad stuff. Previous researches showed that
watching TV while eating will probably make people eat more, get hungry in the afternoon and eat more at dinner.
So Cheke suggests not watching TV while eating. It is one of the easy changes people can make that don’t involve
much self-control, but that makes a great difference.
28.What inspired Davidson’s new finding?A.The growing popularity of unhealthy diet. B.His former study on hippocampus.
C.His research on people’s eating habits. D.The strange behaviour of the studied mice.
29.What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.A sense of hunger. B.The similarity in brains.
C.The damage of brain. D.A diet high in fat and sugar.
30.What are the subjects in Cheke’s study required to do?
A.Memorize the treasure locations. B.Answer questions on their hiding task.
C.Chat on various computer sessions. D.Conduct an experiment with obesity.
31.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.Possible approaches to targeting obesity.B.The research’s contribution to brain science.
C.The link between obesity and memory. D.Changes of people’s living habits.

(2023·安徽安庆·安庆一中校考三模)How good are you at maths? Some people love the challenge of
algebra or enjoy working out number puzzles such as Sudoko. Maths is all around us, from working out how to
split the bill after a meal, to calculating your household bills. But many fear the moment when they have to deal
with numbers and figures and feel a real sense of worry and confusion. It can seem depressing, but this “maths
anxiety” is perfectly normal, and you’re definitely not alone. And anyway, our worries and fears don’t necessarily
reflect our ability.
The problem really starts in childhood, at school. Research has found that maths teachers who are nervous
about teaching the subject can pass on their anxiety to the pupils, and girls may be more likely to be affected. The
Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) found around 31% of 15 and 16-year-olds across 34
countries said they got very nervous while doing maths problems, 33% said they got tense while doing maths
homework, and nearly 60% said they worried maths classes would be difficult. Shulamit Kahn, from Boston
University’s Questrom School of Business, said she believes giving students, particularly girls, good role models
is critical, especially at a young age. She thinks the key is to get people, especially women, who love teaching
maths to younger children.
Writing for BBC Future, David Robson says “It’s not clear why maths causes so much fear compared to
geography. But the fact that there’s a right or wrong answer, there’s no room for bluffing(虚张声势)might make
you more worried about underperforming.” And once we suppose were not a “maths person” we avoid solving
things that we probably could do.
Psychologists have been trying to work out why mental arithmetic can bring us out in a sweat. That seed of
fear may come from many sources, but some suggest that expressing your fears can loosen their hold on you, andencourage children to see a maths test as a challenge, not a threat. In fact, we need to think positively about maths
and give it a second chance.
32.What do we know about maths from paragraph 1?
A.It is less useful in our daily life.
B.It is a subject that all of us love.
C.The anxiety about it depresses many people.
D.The worries about it perfectly reflect our ability.
33.What can happen if teachers are nervous about teaching maths?
A.Their students are certainly not good at maths.
B.Their students will love the challenge of algebra.
C.Those teachers will make mistakes in their class.
D.Their students will be anxious in learning math.
34.How does the author express maths anxiety as a common world phenomenon in paragraph 2?
A.By listing numbers. B.By giving examples.
C.By making comparisons. D.By explaining definitions.
35.What can we do to get over maths anxiety, according to the text?
A.Avoid solving it. B.Study its source.
C.Do more exercise. D.Adopt a positive attitude to it.

Being active and moving is something that is so important for us all, especially for children. 36
However, some parents can feel shocked when they see that their child isn’t interested in sports. So how can you
encourage them to have ago?
It is such a good idea to lead by example when you are a parent. This is true for a variety of aspects, but
especially forgetting children involved in sport. 37 So you need to be someone who is interested and
active, if you want any hope of them doing so too. If you lay on the couch all day then they will just learn to do
that too.
38 Although they can choose who they want to support, seeing your enthusiasm for a particular
player or team can be just what is needed to start their journey. You could look for a team uniform store to get
them a sports shirt with their name on for example, as well as see the team play at one of their games. 39If something is dull, it will be hard for children to be enthusiastic about it. This will make them resent(讨厌)
it, which is not a good thing for later in life. If they show particular skill and learn to play sport, then more
practice and training can come in. 40 When they can enjoy what they do, they will only see it as
something fun to do, rather than what we as adults might see it as, such as a chore to burn calories.
Whatever sport your child chooses to play, encourage them and make it fun, and then it will be something
that they will want to carry on doing as they go about the rest of their lives.
A.They won’t be interested in sports if you’re not.
B.here are some other tips that you would share with them.
C.Share your enthusiasm and it will help to lighten a passion.
D.So think about ways that can get them to be active in the sports.
E.How active a child is will impact their overall health and learning.
F.Apart from leading by example, you could also share your favorite team.
G.However, the main message forgetting children into sport is to keep it fun.

篇完整的短文。
Joey was so excited he could hardly wait to get to the store. He walked so fast that his sister Beth had to run.
“Do you have to hurry like that?” she puffed. On his way from school he had seen that baseball cap in Rogers’
store window. Only a dollar, and this was the last cap! Joey had looked at the cap a long time. He wanted it more
than anything. Every boy at school had one.
Joey thought of his piggy bank, into which he put every coin for running errands (差使) for his family and
neighbors.
Joey raced home, not stopping for anything. He held the fat iron pig, opened it carefully, and poured out the
coins. Ten...twenty...thirty...ninety cents. If only he had one more dime (一角硬币)!
Lost in thought, Joey stared out the window. “What’s wrong, Joey?” asked Mother. Joey told about the
money and the cap. “If you give me what you have, I’ll add a dime,” Mother said, handing him a dollar bill. “I’ll
have some errands for you tomorrow.”
Joey jumped up. “Oh, thanks, Mom. That’s great!” And away went Joey and Beth to the store with the dollar
bill in Joey’s pocket.
They turned the last corner. Ahead was a group of boys and girls, talking heatedly and looking down at thesidewalk.
One of the children was Ronny, a new boy who had been in this town only a short time. Ronny’s father had
been sick, so there wasn’t much money for extras - like baseball cap.
“What’s the matter?” Beth asked, anxiously.
“It’s Ronny,” answered Susan. “He’s been working and finally saved up a whole dollar, and now it’s lost!”
Joey went over to Ronny.
“We’ll all help look. We’ll find it!”
“Ronny was going to get that last cap in Rogers’ window,” put in Billy.
“I wanted it a lot. I want to join them.” Ronny said slowly.
Suddenly Joey remembered how Ronny had watched the fellows playing baseball, his eyes lighting up
eagerly as they shouted and ran.

Well,a mixed picture over the next few days.Today in Britain, very wet and windy. You can see from thesatellite picture that the highest temperatures,as they so often are,are in the southern parts of Europe, where it is
also quite dry. It’s going to be quite cold over northwestern parts of Europe. It will be rainy but in the south there
will be the best of the sunshine. And pretty good but cool in the eastern parts of Europe, too.
Now let’s look at tomorrow’s weather. It will be very much the same in the south except that the rain is starting

Joey stared at the ground, thinking hard. That cap would make Ronny feel he really belonged to the fellow
group. But he himself had longed for it so much. He bit his lower lips, with his hand tightly clutching the dollar.
Ronny’s words constantly flashed through his mind. It hit him that he should do something nice for Ronny. He
bent down and gave a shout, “Look! Look here!” They all crowded around. There almost hidden in the leaves was
the unmistakable green of a dollar bill! Overwhelmingly excited and delighted, Ronny picked up the bill. “Come
on!” someone shouted, and they then made a dash for the store. “Why not come together and get something else
with your dollar?” Beth asked Joey.
Forcing a smile, Joey showed Beth the empty pocket. Eyes wide open, Beth uttered in surprise, “Joey, you
didn’t really find Ronny’s dollar. It was yours.” Joey nodded, a broad smile flickering across his face. He
explained in a calm tone that the baseball cap mattered a lot more to Ronny. With the cap, he thought, Ronny
would feel it easier to fit in with others. After knowing what her brother had done, Beth felt a flush of pride
flooding over her. And not far away from them, Ronny was among the group of boys, wearing his new cap. The
look on his face made Joey feel good-very good. The one dollar had traded what he thought was more than a cap.
