Eighteen-year-old David Aguilar from Andorra was born without a right forearm due to a rare genetic condition
but that has never stopped him from doing anything he wanted to do including typing on a computer with his partial
arm.
Like most kids, David was a LEGO fan and he loved building cars, boats, planes, and motorbikes. But David
also knew that he looked different and wanted to do something about it. “As a child I was very nervous to be in
front of other guys, because I was different, but that didn’t stop me believing in my dreams,” David said. “I wanted
to... see myself in the mirror like I see other guys, with two hands.”
He loved LEGO so much that he wanted to make them a part of himself, so at the age of 9, he built his first
prosthetic (假肢的) arm out of the colorful bricks. But it wasn’t particularly strong or functional.
He waited until he was 18 to try again. Using LEGO pieces, David built a prosthetic arm that he called the MK1.
This multipurpose prosthetic even had a way to grasp items, but David wanted to keep improving his arm and he
made a few more versions. His fourth and current version is a colorful red and yellow fully functional robotic armthat has a bendable elbow joint and flexible grabber built entirely from a LEGO Technic airplane kit.
All of the MK versions are on display in David’s university dorm room that is also decorated with Star Wars
posters. David wants to show people that nothing is impossible even if you have a disability.
David plans to create affordable prosthetics for people who need them, saying, “I would try to give them a
prosthetic, even if it’s for free, to make them feel like a normal person.”
24.How did David feel when standing in front of other kids?
A.Anxious. B.Natural. C.Confident. D.Frightened.
25.What was David’s attitude to his first prosthetic arm?
A.Curious. B.Dissatisfied. C.Indifferent. D.Optimistic.
26.Which of the following can best describe David?
A.Normal and brave. B.Weak and talented.
C.Ambitious and easy-going. D.Resourceful and tough-minded.
27.What’s David’s dream?
A.To be an expert in building LEGO.
B.To become rich by selling prosthetic arms.
C.To offer disabled people cheaper prosthetics.
D.To start a company hiring more disabled people.

Students at Eindhoven University of Technology didn’t just want to build a car that wouldn’t pollute the air; they
wanted to create one that could actually clean it up.
The college team has just exhibited a battery-powered car that absorbs CO. Their car, called the Zem, is equipped
2
with a special filter (过滤器) that cleans up the CO produced by other cars on the road.
2
The Zem was born out of a challenge to build a completely carbon-neutral vehicle. Its body panels (金属板)
were 3D printed to reduce waste and minimize the production of CO . Recycled plastics were also used throughout
2
the outside and inside. The car’s powertrain, which consists of small battery packs and a 22-kWh motor, also makes
use of regenerative braking to increase efficiency.
The real difference maker, though, is the vehicle’s special CO filter. The Zem purifies (净化) the air through
2
the special filter while driving, capturing the CO and storing it. It is able to absorb two kg of CO for 20,000 miles a year,
2 2
meaning ten cars could store as much carbon dioxide as an average tree — a significant amount when considering
the world’s billion cars are currently one of its leading sources of emissions.
Even if the technology isn’t adopted, the team hope that their car can inspire automakers to start making cleanervehicles. “We want to encourage the industry by showing what is already possible,” the leader of the team said. “If
35 students can design, develop and build an almost carbon-neutral car in a year, then there are also opportunities and
possibilities for the industry.”
The Zem is the second zero-emission vehicle we’ve seen come out of the Eindhoven University of Technology.
Last year, another team of students created the Stella Vita, a solar-powered vehicle that could travel up to 450 miles
a day. We can’t wait to see what the school’s students come up with next.
28.Why can the Zem absorb CO ?
2
A.It is battery-powered. B.It has a special filter.
C.It is created by using 3D printing. D.It has reusable body panels.
29.What do we know about the building of the Zem?
A.It is time-consuming. B.It is financially secure.
C.It is physically demanding. D.It is environmentally-friendly.
30.What can be inferred about the Zem from the fourth paragraph?
A.It can capture the CO and dispose it.
2
B.It is able to absorb CO as much as a tree.
2
C.It has a huge potential to reduce pollution.
D.It can run 20,000 miles on a single charge.
31.What does the author expect the students to do?
A.Invest in research. B.Inspire confidence.
C.Innovate further. D.Introduce technology.

A new study released in the journal Plant and Cell Physiology suggests that ethanol —or alcohol —can help
plants survive in times of drought, even for as long as two weeks without water.
To come up with their finding, the researchers grew wheat and rice plants, regularly watering them, and then
added ethanol to the soil in one group of plants over three days. They then kept both groups deprived of(中断) water
for two weeks and found that drunk plants grew better than untreated ones. Around 75% of the drunk wheat and rice
plants survived after rewatering, while less than 5% of the untreated plants did.
The study also looked at how ethanol protected a plant. Using arabidopsis, a small plant commonly used in
experiments, the researchers discovered that when ethanol-treated specimens (样品) were deprived of water, tiny
openings on the leaves’ surface closed up to preserve water and heat.
The team studied arabidopsis’ gene (基因) expression and found that the ethanol-treated plants started behavingif they were experiencing drought, even before they were actually deprived of water. This gene expression gave the
plants an advantage in preparing for a drought.
The researchers said, “The finding is not just useful for the world’s gardens, but also for farms growing vital
crops like rice and wheat. Drought-resistant crops could help achieve sustainable food security, which is an issue
affecting many parts of the world right now.” They added that ethanol was a useful and simple way to increase food
production all over the world in times of drought. “The application of ethanol to plants would be a potent agricultural
method to enhance drought resistance in various plants,” said Motoaki Seki, the study’s lead author. But, he warned
that the ethanol needed to be used reasonably as higher concentration of ethanol prevented plants growing. Seki
added, “We will soon begin testing ethanol on plants in real fields. ”
32.What did the researchers find in their study?
A.Plants produce ethanol in times of drought. B.Drunk plants could live longer without water.
C.There is no need to water house plants every day. D.It requires more water to grow wheat in the field.
33.What do the researchers expect of the finding?
A.It will cut the cost of food production. B.It will bring about the change of diet.
C.It will help maintain global food security. D.It will generate increases in food price.
34.What does the underlined word “potent” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Difficult. B.Effective. C.Similar. D.Primary.
35.What does Seki want to stress about ethanol in the text?
A.It would fit all kinds of plants. B.It has been applied to real fields.
C.It should be used in proper amount. D.It enables wheat plants to grow fast.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“You signed us up for what?” Lu’s eyes widened as Jamie grinned at her. “A charity bike ride. It’d be fun!” She
stared at him open-mouthed. “Fun? But I haven’t ridden a bike for years, Jamie. And I hate exercise! How long is
this ride?” Lu could feel her muscle shrinking at the mere thought of it.
“Only 20 kilometers.”
Lucinda swiped the brightly coloured leaflet advertising the bike ride from her husband’s hand. “Twenty
kilometres? That’s a half marathon, Jamie!”
She tossed the leaflet back at him. “Well you can count me out. I’m not fit enough to run five minutes round the
block, let alone hours on a bike.”
“But you will be in a couple of months. I thought we could train for it together.” Jamie patted his beer belly.
“I’m not exactly in great shape at the moment. And you’ re always saying we don’t get to spend enough time together!”
He gave her his best winning grin.
A smile fell across Lucinda’s lips. It was true, she was always saying that lately. Though spending her weekends
cycling was not exactly what she’d had in mind.A wave of sadness spun through her heart. The past few months had been... difficult. She had lost her job and
was struggling to find a new one. Being at home, scrolling through job adverts and waiting for interview replies, had
left her feeling stuck. Jamie had been working extra hours to support financially, but that only added to her guilt.
Despite trying to stay positive, life had somehow skidded to a stop.
“I’m not sure,” Lu sighed.
“It’s not a race, but a joy ride, Lu.” Jamie reassured her, nudging her playfully. “Plus, I’ve already rented us a
tandem bike(双人自行车)!”
“A tandem?” Lu’s eyes flashed with horror. “Are you mad?” She stared at him. “You’re not even joking, are
you?” Doubts crept into her mind as she imagined the challenges of coordinating their movements on a shared bike.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Actually, the first training session did not go well.
