Unit 4 I used to be afraid of the dark. Section B(1a-1e)  Language goals 1. Students can talk about the change of a person’s behavior and habit using “used to ...”.  Key words and phrases Teaching ant, insect, nervous, primary school, school uniform Aims  Key sentences 1. Now I don’t worry about tests, but I really used to be very nervous about them. 2. Yeah, but we used to have to wear the school uniform. Practice talking about the things they used to like or hate or do in the Teaching childhood. Difficulties Teaching Aids multimedia courseware or other realia that the T needs for teaching Teaching Procedures Tips Step 1 Warming up  Game: Who he / she is? Step 1: Take out a piece of paper, write down what you used to be like. Step 2: Give your paper to the teacher. Step 3: Teacher chooses one paper and read it out. Step 4: The class should guess who he / she is according to the description. Step 2 Presentation & Practice Pre-listening 1a  Show ppt p7-8 to Ss, ask them to look at the pictures and answer the question:What did these kids use to like when they were 1young?  Show the same pictures again. This time, ask Ss to check the things thy used to like when they were a child. (Tip: Ask Ss to share the answers with a partner.) 1b  Ask Ss to write down some other things they used to like when they were a child, then discuss in a group of four. (Tip: Show PPT P11 to Ss, tell them they need to take turns to interview others. T can use the example in PPT P12 to show how to do an interview.) 1c  Before playing the recording, tell Ss that the conversation is between a boy and a girl. Ask them to guess what the conversation might be about. (The class should know that the conversation has something to do with the topic of comparing what used to be with the present.)  Tell Ss that they will have to listen for the exact sentences that they read in their textbooks. Answers: 1. I didn’t use to like tests. 2.I used to hate P.E. class. 1d  Before playing the recording again, get Ss to fill in their answers in the blanks and then exchange their textbooks with a partner.  When playing the recording again, partners need to check their friend’s answers and mark the correct ones. (At the end of the recording, get them to return the textbooks and they can discuss the answers in pairs.) Answers: 2(Show Ss listening material when necessary.) Post-listening 1e  Ask Ss to write down five things about themselves. Find a partner they have never worked with in the class. Share the five things both of them have written down. Compare what they have written: Are any the same? Are they all different?  Ask Ss to use Venn Diagram to make comparison between themselves and their partners. Step 3 Summary & Homework Summary  Ask Ss to do the exercises from PPT P21-22. Homework:  Preview the passage in Section B 2d.  Do the exercises in students’ book. In this period, the learning contents expand from talking about past appearance and personality to talking about likes and dislikes in former Teaching time. So students practice many other words in listening and speaking. The Reflection topic is still about their life in school. They will improve their capacity of language organization and oral output while listening and speaking practice. As usual, we can give them some written work to do after they practice 3listening and speaking. We can give the work to use “get used to” and “used to” in order to get the students to compare the differences between the two phrases. 4
