A classical guitarist(吉他手)was excited to hear from New York City police that his valuable guitar had been
found. He lost it almost a year ago when he got out of a taxi and forgot to take the guitar with him. Laurence
Lennon, 44, said he was running late that day. He was talking to his manager on his phone when he got out of the
taxi in a hurry. He said that he gave the driver$60 and told him to keep the change. He walked through the front
doors of the concert hall still talking on the phone.
Upon discovering his loss, Lennon called the police. The policewoman asked him for the name of the taxi
company, the number of the taxi, and the name of the driver. She told Lennon that he could write a missing items
report at the police station or online. Lennon asked for the online address. It was www.nypd.gov/to protect and to
serve/have a nice day. She told him that finding the guitar might take a couple of years —finding guitars was not as
important as finding murderers and drug dealers. Then she told him to have a nice day.
“This year has been depressing(沮丧), ” said Lennon. “I had to put off the recording of two new CDs. I'vebeen using borrowed guitars. And I was losing hope of ever recovering my guitar.”
Lennon was reunited with his$1 00,000 guitar yesterday. The case and the guitar had been discovered in the
comer of a coffeehouse only two blocks from where Lennon had lost it in the first place. Lennon had
offereda$10.000 reward(奖赏)for its return. He said he would give the reward to the coffeehouse owner, who had
told the police.

Many of the people you meet often have some strange mind, hobby or interest —but that is one of the reasons
why getting to know people is so much fun!
When mentioning hobbies, many people find that they enjoy making collections of special items and it is
through these collections that some of their most unusual tastes can be told. Some people just collect the most
unusual things! As well as the people who enjoy making collections of stamps, first edition literature, DVDs and
valuable artwork, there are also people who have made it their life-long job to collect items that would make others
more than a little surprised. So what are some of the strange things people have been known to collect?
Barbed wire, for instance, is the star of one particular collection for one California man. Jesse James has been
collecting things with sharp end since 1957 and he has even written a book about his specimens(收藏).
There are records of people collecting banana labels, tea bags, nails (that's the metal kind, not the other sort!),
toothpaste and even, unbelievably, dreams. Wisconsin's Elizabeth Lowe has been recording dreams for many years
and has over 2,500 dreams in her collection.Collections, no matter what kind, have one thing in common for their owners: value. Even if you're collecting
items that are "worthless" in other ways, they are valuable to you —which is why you'll often meet people who are
very protective of their collections and ensure they look after them well.
34.What is this text mainly about?
A. Hobbies and interests. B. Strange collection.
C. Reasons for collection. D. The value of special items.
35.According to the writer, which is considered to be a more popular collection item?
A. Artwork. B. Tea bags.
C. Toothpaste. D. Nails.
36."Barbed wire" is used as an example to show that collectors' specimens can be very ____________.
A. difficult B. unexpected
C. expensive D. practical
37.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Personal preference is the true value. B. Collection can make people rich.
C. Some collections are worthless. D. Hobbies can be expensive.

A group of graduates got together to visit their old university professor. The conversation soon turned into
complaints about stress in work and life. Offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and returned
with a large pot of coffee and a variety of cups-some plain-looking, some expensive and some beautifully designed-
telling them to help themselves to the coffee.
When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said, "If you have noticed, all the nice-looking
expensive cups have been taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want
only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress.
“The cup itself adds no quality to the coffee. What all of you really want is coffee, not the cup, but you still
would like to go for the best cups...And then you began eyeing each other’s cups.”
“Now consider this: Life is the coffee; jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to
hold and contain life, and the type of cup we have does not define(界定),nor change the quality of life we live.Sometimes, by focusing only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee. Taste the coffee, not the cups! Don't let the
cups drive you...enjoy the coffee instead."
38.What did the students complain about at the professor's home?
A. Life on campus. B. The taste of coffee.
C. The pressure in work. D. The look of various cups.
39.What cups did the students prefer choosing?
A. Plain ones. B. Large ones.
C. Cheap ones. D. Pleasant ones.
40.What did the professor compare coffee to?
A. Jobs. B. Money.
C. Life. D. Position.
41.What did the professor try to tell his students?
A. A positive attitude towards life is important.
B. Tasty coffee is more expensive than beautiful cups.
C. Social position determines the quality of life.
D. Caps improve the quality of coffee.

Here's something to think about the next time you ask your teacher for help: Struggling with school work on
your own can help you learn. According to a recent study, the more you struggle while you are learning new
information, the better you can remember it later.
This theory might surprise you. When teachers are presenting new information, they often give students lots of
help. But a new study shows this may not be the best way to support learning. "Don't be too quick to get help when
learning something new," Professor Manu Kapur said. "Try to work on it yourself even if it means trying different
ways."
Kapur tested his idea out on students in Singapore. He separated students into two groups. In the first group,
the students were asked to solve math problems with the teacher's help. In the second group, the students were
asked to solve the same problems by helping one another, instead of getting help from the teacher. With theteacher's help, the students in the first group were able to find the correct answers. The students in the second group
did not solve the problems correctly. But they did come up with a lot of good ideas.
The students were then tested on what they had learned. The group without any help from a teacher scored
much higher than the group who had help. Kapur said working to find the answers helped students understand the
process, not just the solution(答案).
Kapur’s advice for children is to put a lot of effort into learning something new rather than going to the teacher
for help. "Simply doing a little work or nothing at all won't work," says Kapur, "The struggle needs to be an attempt
to figure out or solve a problem in as many ways as possible."
42.What did Kapur find out in his recent study?
A. Ways to solve math problems quickly. B. Types of information students need most.
C. The best way to support learning. D. The benefit of a teacher's help.
43. How did the students in the first group perform when solving math problems?
A. They solved the problems correctly. B. They developed many good ideas.
C. They failed to find correct answers. D. They found the solutions on their own.
44.What was the result of Kapur's test on students in Singapore?
A. The first group had higher scores.
B. The second group had higher scores.
C. The two groups almost scored the same.
D. No clear conclusion could be drawn.
45.Which of the following would be the best title of the text?
A. Ready for School B. Help on the Way
C. Thank You Teacher D. Exercise Your Mind
