People rarely live on the two larger islands B When my teenaged son became seriously ill, terrible times for my family began. Our once-happy home became tense and depressed. My husband and I were exhausted under the great stress of caring for my son. It was as if we forgot how to communicate — we couldn’t have a simple conversation without a fighting. Our marriage was on the point of breaking up.One evening, my son and I were talking about gifts. I recalled my first Valentine’s present from my husband, a kazoo. I was awkward when I received it because I couldn’t get it to make a sound although I am a professional saxophone player. However hard I tried, it just never worked. The kazoo eventually got packed away and forgotten. But my son was interested and insisted on seeing it. After some trouble, I found it. “You couldn’t get a sound? What’s so hard about it?” my husband asked, amazed. He took the kazoo and blew. Nothing happened. Surprised, he tried again. Still there was no sound. Frustrated, he tried again, only to produce a funny sound like an angry bumblebee trapped in the mouth of a bear. We burst into laughter. My son took a turn to play the kazoo. He did no better than us, causing more laughing. Seeing his face light up, we felt as if the darkness had lifted and a ray of sunshine was let in. It was the best ten minutes of the past couple of years. The mood stayed light for the rest of the evening. It didn’t solve anything. But this experience with the kazoo brought some change in our hearts that always reminds us that there are still things to laugh at and enjoy, and that we can still connect as a family. 34. What affected the relationship of the couple? A. Quarrels between the couple over marriage. B. Different values they shared towards everything. C. Stress and chaos arising from their son’s serious illness. D. Lack of money needed for their son’s medical treatment. 35. Why did the husband blow the kazoo personally? A. He had a love for playing the kazoo. B. He meant to make his son delighted. C. He wanted to ease a feeling of depression. D. He didn’t think it that hard to play the kazoo. 36. What is the turning point of the story? A. My failure to get the kazoo to make a sound. B. The involvement of my husband in playing the kazoo. C. My memory about the valentine’s present from my husband. D. The failed but funny playing of the kazoo by my husband and son. 37. What does the story mainly tell us? . A Every cloud has a silver lining. B. Parents are the best teachers. C. Music can cure the hurt souls. D. Misfortunes (不幸) test the true love. C Children should do housework. That’s a controversial (有争议的) idea, though not everyone will admit it. A fewparents will say that their children are too busy for housework. Many more of us assign (分派) housework, or say we believe in them, but the housework just doesn’t get done. That’s a problem. For starters, housework is good for kids. Being a part of the routine work of running a household helps children develop an awareness of the needs of others, while at the same time contributing to their emotional well-being. One small study, done over a period of 25 years, found that the best predictor (预测) for young adults success in their mid-20s was whether they participated in household tasks at age 3 or 4. Those early shared responsibilities extended to a sense of responsibility in other areas of their lives. But for all that their help matters, few kids are doing much around the house at all. In a survey of 1,000 American adults, 75 percent said they believed regular housework made kids more responsible. Yet while 82 percent reported having had regular housework growing up, only 56 percent of those with children said they required them to do housework. Sports and homework are not get-out-of-housework-free cards. The goal, after all, is to raise adults who can balance a caring role in their families and communities with whatever lifetime achievement goals they choose. Housework teaches that balance. What should you do when getting children to do housework? Accept no excuses. Don’t worry if you must repeat yourself again and again. If you’re spending more time getting the child to do this job than it would take to do it yourself, then you’re doing it right. Can a payment help? Maybe. But if you’re trying to teach kids to share the responsibility of a home, paying them for routine housework is not the right message. 38. What can we infer from the first paragraph? A. Very few children get housework done. B. Children are very busy with housework. . C Housework is a must-do for parents. D. Family members should respect each other. 39. What is found in the small study? A. Housework helps a man live a happy life. B. A man’s success depends on his housework. C. Housework benefits a sense of responsibility. D. A child must start doing housework at age 3 40. What does the author advise parents to do in the last paragraph? A. Balance housework and study. B. Help the child do housework positively. C. Do housework by themselves. D. Pay the child for housework. 41. What is the best title of the text? A. Adults Do Less housework in the us. B. Housework Matters to children.C. Parents’ words Speak Louder. D. Children Need More Care at home. D A study led by The University of Edinburgh researchers found that the performance of runners who listened to self-selected music as they ran after completing a demanding (费力的) thinking task was at the same level as when they were not mentally tired. The findings of the study were published in the Journal of Human Sport and Exercise. Researchers used two tests to study how listening to music affected the running performance of fitness enthusiasts ( 健身爱好者). One test looked at the effects on the interval running ability — alternating between high intensity (强 度) running and lower intensity jogging — with a group of nine exercisers, and the other on a 5 km time trial with a group of nine trained runners. The groups completed a 30-minute computer-based cognitive (认知的) test which put them in a mentally worn state before completing high intensity exercise. They were tested with and without motivational music which they selected. Taking into account the results of a baseline test taken by participants (参与者) that they did without completing a mentally demanding test beforehand and without music, the researchers found the interval running ability of the mentally worn fitness enthusiasts was slightly greater with music compared to that without music, and was the same as when the participants were not mentally tired. The 5 km time trial performance also showed small improvements with self-selected music compared to no music. Dr. Shaun Phillips, of The University of Edinburgh’s Moray House School of Education and Sport, said, “Feeling tired mentally is a common thing for many of us, and can negatively (消极地) affect many of our daily activities, including exercise. Finding safe and effective ways to reduce this negative impact is therefore useful. The research showing that listening to self-selected motivational music can help active people improve their endurance running ability and performance when mentally worn out may provide a useful strategy .” 42. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about the study? A. Its purpose. B. Its principle. C. Its process. D. Its participants 43. Why did the researchers consider the baseline test? A. To prove that their finding is useful B. To offer evidence to support their study C. To make a comparison with their test results D. To find links between music and mental health 44. What is Dr. Shaun Phillips’ attitude towards the research? A. Approving B. Doubtful C. Critical D. Carefree 45. Which of the following can serve as the best title? A. Being Mentally Tired Is a Common Feeling.B. Listening to Music Benefits Mental Health. C. Exercise Regularly Improves Mental Condition. D. Running to Music Reduces Mental Tiredness. 第二卷(两大题,共30分) IV.单词拼写(共10小题,每小题2分,满分20分) 根据下列句子及所给汉语注释,写出空缺处各单词的正确形式。(每个空只写一词) 46. We meet ______________ (定期地) to discuss the progress of the project.
