Coached by his mother who was 81 at the time, Cliff Young started the marathon with work shoes and work clothes. Competing against world-class marathon runners who were backed up by big sports companies and spent hundreds of hours preparing for the race, Cliff Young’s training method was just running after his sheep. He told the organizers he could run after his sheep for a few days and that he could surely compete with other runners. The ultra marathon generally took 5 days to compete and this potato farmer’s decision seemed suicidal. In fact, some tried to stop him from running the super-difficult race because they thought Cliff Young could die because of the heat and fatigue (疲劳). After all, he was 61 years old! To cut the story short, Cliff Young managed to finish the race. While the young racers slept, he continued to race throughout the night. The young athletes left him far behind until the very last night where he finally led the marathon. Not only did Cliff Young, a 61-year-old potato farmer, survive the race, but he even managed to win the marathon and actually broke the race record by 9 hours! He even gave away his prize money to the rest of the runners after him. After the win, he continued to run in many ultra marathon races and even set standards in the world of endurance racing. C We often reach a point in our life when we should be ready for change that will help us unlock our self- , improvement power. However there’s always something staring at us right under our nose but we don’t see it. The only time we think of unlocking our self-improvement power is when everything gets worst. When do we realize that we need to change diets? When none of our shirts and jeans would fit us. When do we stop eating candies and chocolates? When all of our teeth have fallen off. When do we realize that we need to stop smoking? When our lungs have gone bad. We see the warning signs and signals when things get rough anddifficult. The only time most of us ever learn about unlocking our self-improvement power is when the whole world is falling apart. Change will happen, like it or hate it. At one point or another, we are all going to finally unlock our self- improvement power not because the world says so, but because we realize it’s for our own good. Happy people don’t just accept change; they embrace (拥抱) it. Unlocking our self-improvement power means unlocking ourselves out of the box of thought that is just the way we are. Jane always tells everyone that she doesn’t have courage to be around groups of people. She heard her family tell the same things about her to other people. Over the years, that is what Jane has believed. Every time a great crowd come, she steps back and locks herself up in a room. Jane not only believes in her story, but lives it! Self-improvement may not be everybody’s favorite word, but if we look at things in a different way, we might have greater chances of enjoying the whole process instead of counting the days until we are fully improved. Only when we are enjoying the whole process of unlocking our self-improvement power will we realize that we’re beginning to take things light and become happy. 38. The writer mentions the three questions in Paragraph 2 to show that ________. A. we learn our lessons when we experience pain B. we are responsible for the problems we meet C. life fails us when we get into the wrong way D. life is a long journey full of ups and downs 39. What is the key to solving Jane’s problem? A. She needs to remember why she started. B. She has to know how to get on with people. C. She has to realize she is not what she is in her story. D. She needs to understand the importance of confidence. 40. The writer probably agrees that ________. A. the world tells us how to improve ourselves B. people change when they find it easy to do that C. welcoming change in life is a drive to become better D. enjoying the process of self-improvement makes life simpler 41. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? . A Is it important to take things light? B. Is it necessary to embrace challenges? C. To hold on to the last moment or to give up?D. To free ourselves out of the box or to stay in it? D The number of fin-less porpoise (鼠海豚), a protected species living in the Yangtze River, has seen growth compared with the 1,012 that were seen in 2017. A previous survey carried out on Oct. 25 said more mother-child pairs were seen and some were seen in places that had never reported them earlier. Fin-less porpoise, also called Smiling Angels, have become a natural indicator of the health of the Yangtze River ecosystem, especially after the Lipotes vexillifer, a species of the freshwater dolphin commonly known as Baiji, became extinct in 2007. Despite efforts to protect the fin-less porpoise for over 40 years, its numbers continued to fall. Finally, there is some good news. The turnaround would not have been possible without the three earlier scientific surveys and the ongoing one. Add to that a 10-year fishing ban on the Yangtze River carried out on Jan. I last year followed by the fin-less porpoise being upgraded to a level protected species on the national list on Feb 5, 2021, and the Yangtze River Protection Law coming into effect on March 1, 2021. Because of these measures, the provincial-level regions along the Yangtze River relocated their chemical plants, closed down illegal docklands, mended wetlands and adjusted sailing lanes. All these efforts ultimately improved the river’s ecological environment, helping breathe life into the fin-less porpoise species. The results show that China has chosen the right path in protecting not only the fin-less porpoise, but also the river’s ecosystem. The story of the revival of the fin-less porpoise is only part of the bigger story of the Yangtze River’s protection as a whole. And protecting the river is part of the larger picture of the country’s ecological civilization. Fixing the Yangtze River’s ecology can benefit hundreds of generations, and a good ecology is a fortune of the Chinese nation as a whole. 42. What do we know about the Lipotes vexillifer? A. It was extinct about 15 years ago. B. Its favourite habitat is ocean. C. Its population is falling rapidly. D. It has been a protected species. 43. What makes the fin-less porpoise increase? A. Ban on fishing industry forever. B. The earlier and ongoing scientific surveys. C. Relocation of the wetlands. D. Improvement of the chemical plants. 44. What is the author’s attitude towards fixing the Yangtze River’s ecology? A. Skeptical. B. Worried. C. Conservative. D. Positive. 45. What is the best title for the text? A. Fin-less Porpoise —a Protected Species B. Making the Smiling Angels “Smile Again”C. The Yangtze River—Origin of Chinese People D.
