Alexander Graham Bell was born on March 3,1847. He was the middle of three sons born to Alexander
and Eliza Bell of Edinburgh, Scotland. His childhood was happy, he spent time in Edinburgh during the week
/ and in the country on weekends. More than anything, Alexander loved learning new things and exploring
nature. He collected plants and studied animals.
Alexander’s best subjects were science and music. He learned music from his nearly deaf mother. She
played music mostly by feel. To hear the music, she would put a hearing tool to the instrument, which
magnified the sound.
Alexander’s father was a speech expert. He researched how English sounds work, like the basic sound
rules you learn for speaking. He really wanted to help his wife, Eliza, and other deaf people. In 1864, he
invented a “sound alphabet” (called Visible Speech), which used symbols to show how sounds are made. He
spent years coming up with symbols to show any sound the human voice could make. His symbols matched
mouth shapes for sounds. Visible Speech helped deaf people learn how to talk better so that they could
communicate with others.
The example of his parents encouraged Alexander. He was interested in inventing things, especially
wanting to create inventions that could help others. Alexander and his brother actually made a “speaking
machine”. It could act like a mouth and throat to say words like “mama”.
As an adult, Alexander worked with deaf students and later became an expert at a university. Inventing
things was a big part of Alexander’s life. After one invention, he always moved on to the next, never satisfied
with what he had made. He went on to be one of the most important inventors ever. What was his famous
invention? The telephone!

(4) What was the same purpose behind both Alexander’s and his father’s inventions?

Bread, a simple food made from flour and water, has been part of human life. Scientists have learned
that humans have eaten bread in some form for over 10,000 years.
Ancient Egyptians were among the first professional bread-makers. Egypt got little rain. Ancient
Egyptian farmers depended on the yearly flood of the Nile River to water their fields. These dry conditions
made wheat the best crop to grow—it needed less water than other plants. Ancient Egyptians made flour with
wheat, then baked bread.
Early Egyptian bread was flat, like modern pancakes. But around 300 B.C., something amazing
happened: Bakers discovered that adding yeast made bread big and soft. Scientists found that professional
bakers and home bakers used the same skills in ancient Egypt. Home bakers, usually women, made the bread
only needed for the day.
Today, people still make bread from the same basic things the Egyptians used before—flour, yeast, salt
and water. While we now have choices like homemade bread, neighbourhood bakeries or factory-made bread,
every slice of bread connects us to those ancient kitchen experiments by the Nile. From flatbread to soft
/ sandwiches, bread’s 10,000-year journey shows how human creativity turns simple things into something
special.
(1) What great improvement in bread-making did the Ancient Egyptians make?
A. They grew potatoes or rice to make bread.
B. They kept lots of bread for daily use.
C. They made bread big and soft.
D. They made bread in big factories.
(2) What does the underlined word “it” refer to in the second paragraph?
A. Wheat.
B. Flour.
C. The yearly flood.
D. The dry condition.
(3) What can be inferred from the development of bread-making according to the passage?
A. Egyptians makes the best bread.
B. Bread connects Egyptians to the world.
C. Simple things turn everything special.
D. Life becomes better with human creativity.
(4) Where can we probably find this passage?
A. A business magazine.
B. A farming textbook.
C. A book about food history.
D. A scientific report on Egypt.
答案
(1) C
(2) A
(3) D
(4) C
But around 300 B.C., something amazing happened: Bakers discovered
that adding yeast made bread big and soft.”

so that they can grow up to be big cats.”
根据“First, she chooses a safe place and builds a comfortable nest there.”以及“After that, the mother
cat stays close to them to keep them safe and warm.”
故选A。
根据“They are also ‘blind’ because their eyes are closed. They will be able to open their eyes after about
eight days.”
They are also ‘blind’ because their eyes are closed. They will be able to open their eyes after about
eight days.”
Even when people just want to play with the babies, the mother cat might think they’re dangerous

The situation is d (4) around the North and South Poles. There are o (5) two seasons:
an extremely cold winter and a slightly less cold summer.
答案
(m)oves ;(w)eather ;(c)older ;(d)ifferent ;(o)nly
根据“when
our planet...around the Sun”以及⾸字⺟可知,这⾥说的是星球绕着太阳转,短语move
根据“More
sunlight brings longer days and warmer...”
In autumn and winter,
days are shorter with less sunlight”以及⾸字⺟可知,秋冬季节阳光少,⽩天短,天⽓会更
There are...two seasons: an extremely cold winter and
a slightly less cold summer.”
根据“an extremely
cold winter and a slightly less cold summer”以及⾸字⺟可知,南北极只有两个季节,“only”意
Last week, there was a lecture on in our school.
答案
how ;to ;keep ;healthy |fit
to do sth.“如何做某事”;keep healthy/fit“保持健康”。故填how;to;keep;healthy/fit。
The lecture Mr. Zhang in the school hall.
答案
was ;given ;by
故填was;given;by。
He advised us to exercise more all the time.
答案
/ instead ;of ;sitting
instead;of;sitting。
It was all the students listened carefully.
答案
such ;a ;lively ;lecture ;that
⽤“such…that...”引导结果状语从句,结构为“such a+形容词+单数名词+that从句”。故填such;
a;lively;lecture;that。
lecture it was!
答案
What ;a ;wonderful
故填What; a; wonderful。

答案
My First Cantonese Opera Experience
Dear teachers and fellow students,
My name is Li Hua. It’s my honour to share my first Cantonese Opera experience with you.
Last year, I went to watch a Cantonese Opera performance. As soon as the curtain rose, I was
immediately attracted. The actors used vivid body language to convey various emotions. Their every
gesture and movement were full of meaning, making the characters come alive.
The whole performance was a visual and auditory feast. The unique music and elaborate costumes
added to the charm. I was deeply impressed by the wonderful plot and the actors’ excellent acting skills.
It made me realize how profound and fascinating Cantonese Opera is.
To help more people around me understand Cantonese Opera better, I plan to share my experience
through short videos. I’ll also encourage my friends to watch performances together. Moreover, schools
can organize more Cantonese Opera-related activities, like inviting actors to give lectures or perform.
Only in this way can we better inherit and develop this precious intangible cultural heritage.
Thank you for listening.
