Passage 1
Imagine you’re about to submit an application to your dream school and suddenly, your
heart starts pounding (狂跳): Did I make a wise decision choosing this major? 1 ? To
avoid this situation, follow these steps.
What subjects interest you? An automatic answer may be the subject in which you get the
highest score. 2 . If you had to take one class, what would it be? When you have free
time, what kinds of books will you pick up and read? Your answers may hint at what you’re
truly interested in.
3 . For example, artificial intelligence, biomedical science and mechanical engineering
are some of the most promising current majors.
Now take a closer look at the above two steps. For example, maybe you find yourself hooked
when you’re learning about computer science, and artificial intelligence appears to be of great
importance in the world as well. 4 . There may be a few, but don’t worry. We still have
one more step.
Check your dream school’s admission requirements. For example, I’ve been interested in both
psychology and education, but apparently psychology has higher requirements for admission.
5 .
Grab a pen and start creating your own desirable major.
A.No, think hard
B.Mark them both
C.What if I’m wrong
D.What about seeking advice from my parents
E.If you have many ideas in mind, list them all down
F.Comparatively speaking, education would be a smarter choice
G.Write down what you believe will be most in demand in the future
2.A 过渡句。
B项中的“them both”(它们两个)代指上文提到的“computer science”和
“artificial intelligence”两个专业,故选B。
5.F 细节句。F项中的“education”与上句中的“education”为词汇复现现象,并且比较
心理学与教育学这两个专业,smarter与上文higher相对应,故选F。
Passage 2
How to Inspire Yourself to Achieve Top Success
Often, many people rise to successful heights and fall, never to spring back up. 1
Here are a few ways to inspire yourself to achieve top success.
Be realistic about your goals. Many people accept goal-setting as one of the primary steps in
any successful journey. While goal-setting is the first step to success, doing it the wrong way
can set you several steps back and make your journey stressful. 2
3 Ideation (观念形成) involves the formation of new ideas and concepts and is an
essential process in finding new ways to complete your successful journey. The process
doesn’t end after dreaming of new ideas. Going further to write them down and brainstorming
can help you adjust them. Note that well—constructed ideas can make efforts more
manageable, especially when solving a problem. As experts always say, “Define the problem
well, and the solution will present itself.”
Know when to multitask and when to deep focus. It’s appealing to engage in multiple tasks to
get things done. 4 However, some tasks may require extreme focusing. Seasoned design
and writing professionals often take this approach. J.K. Rowling, for example, spends many
weeks away from regular life in writing her books.
Meditate (冥想) when you can. 5 You’re likely to produce very little results when
your mind is blocked and tired. Meditation is a great way to regenerate and facilitate your
restoration process.
A.Dream of the problems.
B.Write down ideas and brainstorm.
C.It pays to set realistic and measurable goals.
D.That’s the reason why we need to rise to success.
E.Resting the mind can be another form of inspiration.
F.Multitasking may not be a bad way of clearing your desk and generating results.
G.That’s because rising to success is one thing and managing the successful stage another.

“Meditate(冥想)”为词汇复现现象。同时“the mind”也对应下文中的“your mind”。
Passage 3
Be a Green Guest
When people take a vacation, they often take vacation from responsibility, too. Our behavior
at hotels is one of the biggest problems. We have our linen(亚麻织品)washed daily for us,
and are provided with an endless stream of hot water—what’s not to love about that? But all
of this luxury equals serious consequences for the environment. 1 . They offer programs
and facilities that save water and energy. That’s a good start, but there is a lot more you can
do to cut down on the amount of waste produced everywhere.
• 2 .
In America alone, there are about 50,000 hotels. Now think if hotel management leaves out
two small bottles for each hotel room every day, that’s a huge amount of little plastic bottles
that may not even get recycled. And what about all of that shampoo when you don’t finish the
bottle? A better way is to bring your own shampoo from home.
•Turn off the lights.
You do it when you’re at home, right? Do it at the hotel, too. Studies have shown that, in
hotels, the majority of energy spent on lighting comes from the bathroom light being left on
for more than one hour! 3 , remember to hit the switch!
•Don’t have your sheets or towels washed every day.
Sure, it’s a luxury to have linen and towels cleaned every day, but that’s all it is. Washing a
set of bed sheets and a pair of bathroom towels requires about 12—16 gallons of water. See if
there is a policy on requesting that your towels and linen get washed weekly. In some hotels,
it’s as simple as hanging towels back up on a hook. 4 .
These tips are also useful for trips to a friend’s or a relative’s house. 5 . They will also
save your hosts a lot of money.
A.Think about bathroom facilities
B.Just say “no” to hotel shampoos
C.When you’re using the bathroom
D.After you’re done with your business
E.They will save plastic, water, and electricity
F.More and more hotels are becoming eco-friendly
G.In others, you may ask the front desk for a personal request
的“equals serious consequences for the environment”(意味着给环境带来严重后果)。
上句中的“In some hotels”(在一些宾馆)对应G项中的“In others”(在另
下句中的“They will also save”与E项中的“They will save”为句式和词
Passage 4
Boosting your emotional quotient, or EQ, involves identifying and managing your own
emotions, as well as evaluating and controlling the way in which you react to those of others.
1 It can also improve your relationships with loved ones and your social interactions. Here
are some tips you can use to start improving your EQ.
•Identify your emotions.
Identifying your emotions takes practice and is an important foundational step in building
emotional quotient. Regularly recognizing and naming your emotions throughout the day is a
good way to develop your EQ. 2 You could even go a step further, and try to determine
how the presence of certain emotions affects your behavior and productivity.
•Consider your response.
3 Taking responsibility for the way you behave towards others and, possibly even more
importantly, how you treat yourself, is a crucial aspect of emotional quotient.
• 4
Empathy is a cornerstone of EQ. It is defined as the ability to identify and share the thoughts,
feelings or emotional states of another person. A little empathy goes a long way. It is
important to demonstrate empathy towards people other than just those with whom you find it
easy to get along.
•Listen actively.
Engage in the moment and acknowledge what other people are saying. 5 Active
listening involves asking open-ended questions such as “When?” “How?” “Do you mean...?”
or “Could you tell me a bit more about that?”. Active listening also calls for avoiding
questions that would get only a “yes” or “no” response.
Developing your emotional quotient can not only help you reduce your stress, but also leave
you with more time to connect with, and continuously improve your relationships with, those
around you.
A.Show your care.
B.Put yourself in other people’s shoes.
C.You just don’t know what they might be going through.
D.You must remember you can choose how you react to a situation.
E.Besides, trying to identify exactly how you are feeling can do the trick.
F.Try to avoid just waiting for your turn to talk about yourself and your story.
G.Exploring and improving these skills can help you to succeed in your career.
E项中的“identify exactly how you are feeling”与标题“Identify your
emotions.”
Passage 5
Traffic congestion is a serious problem in cities worldwide. There are simply too many
vehicles competing for too little space. The company TomTom, which does research on
traffic in cities worldwide, estimated that in 2015 the average commuter wasted 100 hours
during the evening rush hour alone. In addition to wasting people’s time, traffic jams have
many other negative effects. 1 .
Traffic jams have negative effects on drivers, cities and the environment. To begin with, they
cause stress to drivers, which may lead to health problems or road rage. 2 . Traffic
congestion wastes fuel, which in turn produces more carbon dioxide through car exhaust and
contributes to the greenhouse effect.
3 , it is important for cities and governments everywhere to take steps to reduce road
congestion. The most obvious solutions involve engineering. This means building more roads
with wider lanes so that more cars can travel at the same time. However, the costs of
engineering solutions are extremely high.
Therefore, a more popular solution is needed. 4 . For example, ferries, cycles and
underground trains are included. One suggestion is to encourage people to cycle more.
Although cycling has obvious health benefits and does not pollute the air, it is not practical in
every climate and can prove dangerous in heavy traffic.
Overall, cities are using a variety of methods to tackle the problem of traffic congestion. 5
. We should encourage alternative forms of transport because they reduce the amount of
traffic on the roads and also have a positive effect on the environment.
A.Because of these serious effects
B.Owing to inconveniences for some people
C.It would be to promote other forms of transport
D.Another possibility is to persuade people to use buses
E.Most of them have advantages as well as disadvantages
F.Moreover, traffic congestion negatively affects the environment
G.Therefore, governments everywhere are working hard to find solutions to this problem
F项中的“Moreover”对应上句中的“To begin with”,“negatively affects the
3.A 过渡句。A项中的“these serious effects”与上文中的“negative effects”相对应,并
C项中的“other forms of transport”(其他交通形式)对应下句中的“ferries,
cycles and underground trains”(渡船、骑行、地铁)。
5.E 细节句。E项中的“them”代指上句中的“a variety of methods”。
Passage 6
How to Be a Good Upstairs Neighbor
One must remember to be polite when living in an apartment building. You may
unintentionally bother your neighbors with actions that you think to be harmless. 1
Living upstairs, you must always be aware that everything you do may be heard by those who
live below. This doesn’t mean that you have to completely change your lifestyle, though.
2 This will greatly reduce the sound of your footsteps, thus limiting the sound your
downstairs neighbor will hear. You should always remember to change your shoes when
entering your apartment to ensure that your downstairs neighbor doesn’t hear you walking
around.
Place carpets in your apartment if you have hardwood floors. Doing so is another way to
decrease the sound of steps coming from an upstairs apartment. You can also put your
furniture on these carpets. 3
Close your windows when you can. A floor is usually about three meters high, so it’s quite
easy to hear your conversations. 4 Therefore, whenever you are watching TV or
listening to a radio, try to keep your windows closed as much as possible.
Do your cleaning on weekend afternoons. 5 Doing such housework at 3:00 pm on a
Saturday is much better than doing so at 9:30 on a Tuesday night.
A.Wear slippers while in your upstairs apartment.
B.It becomes much easier when your windows are open.
C.No matter what you do, consider your neighbor’s requirements.
D.There’ll be a time when you will run a cleaner to clean your room.
E.This is especially true for those people who live above an apartment.
F.It will disturb your downstairs neighbor who has to work the next morning.
G.This keeps your furniture from moving around, thus limiting noise a downstairs neighbor
may hear.

“live above an apartment”与下句中的
“Living upstairs”
2.A 主旨句。
“This”指代A项中的“Wear slippers(穿拖鞋)”这件事。
3.G 细节句。G项中的“your furniture”与上句中的“your furniture”为词汇复现现象。

午打扫卫生”,并且下文中的“Doing such housework”就是指代“run a cleaner to clean
your room”这件事。
Passage 7
Good sportsmanship is one of the most important lessons that your kids can learn from
the competition. But how do you teach your kids good sportsmanship? Here are some tips.
Set a good example. The first role model that your kids will have in games is you. What
behavior you model will have the biggest influence on your kids. 1 By doing so, your
kids will learn from you unconsciously and gain more popularity.
2 The coach is always looking for the best decision for the good of the whole team. 3
Your kids may feel upset at first. But showing good sportsmanship means placing the team’s
needs above their own, so you should teach your kids to trust the coach’s judgement.
Remember you are the parent, not the coach. Your job as a parent is different from a job as a
coach. As a parent, you are there to guide all of your kids’ experiences and not focus on
demanding performance. However, if you see a coach demanding too much, speak up. 4
Maintain a good attitude to both winning and losing. Good sportsmanship also requires a
positive attitude to both the victory and the defeat. Pushing your kids too hard may drive them
to quit. 5 It’s also a good idea to find positive plays to talk about and discuss lessons to
be learned after.
A.Teach your kids to put teams first.
B.Tell your kids to listen to the coach.
C.However, finding a good role model is not an easy job.
D.After all, you are also an advocate for your kids if needed.
E.This means the role of your kids may be reduced or changed.
F.You need to be nice to all people on the court, even the opponents.
G.Instead, whatever the results are, always tell them you are proud of them.

G项中的“them”指代上句中的“your kids”。
Passage 8
There are so many dogs who are stuck in shelters or in foster care(寄养照管)and that are
looking for a forever home.
Don’t Let Dogs Always Be Outside
Owners should avoid leaving their dogs outside for all hours for several reasons. Staying out
in the sun for too long can cause them to get thirsty. 1 because it leaves them feeling
severely uncomfortable. A good fix is to install a dog door, so your dog can choose if they
want to be outside or inside.
Accept Their Personality Changes
Some dog owners may not realize that it’s common for dogs’ personalities to change over
time. They may have been a friendly, energetic puppy and grow up to be a shy dog who
doesn’t like being around others. 2 , avoid blaming them. Owners can’t change their dogs
overnight and it can sometimes be impossible to alter their personalities to make them
someone they’re not. 3 , and seek a professional to find out if it’s possible to avoid any
harmful behavior.
Try Not to Push Them over the Edge
Owners need to pay attention to signs their dogs may show if they are scared and take care of
the situation accordingly. 4 . Instances where this may occur are through training, being
around new people or animals, or going for a ride in the car.
Do Not Leave Your Dog in the Car
Dogs should never be left in the car alone, especially with the windows rolled up. 5 , he
will be charged with animal cruelty. This is because dogs can get sick and even suffer fatal
consequences due to being left in either a very hot or cold car. Animal safety experts
recommend taking action if you see an animal by itself in a car.
A.They are in some kind of trouble
B.It’s best to be patient with these changes
C.If their personality changes for the worse
D.Cold and rainy weather is not ideal for dogs
E.If the owner leaves pets unattended in a parked car
F.This means not pushing them over the edge if they aren’t ready
G.There’s a limit to how much time they should be spending outside
此外,because从句中的“it”代指“Cold and rainy weather”,并与D项为因果关系。
F项中的“not pushing them over the edge”与小标题中的“Not to Push
Them over the Edge”为词汇复现现象,并且句意符合上下文,故选F。
unattended in a parked car”对应本段小标题,故选E。
Passage 9
How much time do you spend doing research before you make a decision? There are
people who go over every detail exhaustively before making a choice. 1 Psychologists
call this way of thinking a cognitive bias (偏见), a tendency toward a specific mental
mistake.
To study “jumping”, we examined decision-making patterns among more than 600 people
from the general population. We found that jumpers made more errors than non-jumpers on
problems that require thoughtful analysis. 2 In a quiz about US civics, they
overestimated the chance that their answers were right significantly more than other
participants did—even when their answers were wrong.
So what is behind “jumping”? Psychological researchers commonly distinguish between two
pathways of thought: the automatic system, which reflects ideas that come to the mind easily,
spontaneously and without effort, and the controlled system including conscious and effortful
reasoning. The study found that jumpers and non-jumpers were equally influenced by
automatic thoughts. 3
It is the controlled system that helps people counterbalance mental biases introduced by the
automatic system. As a result, jumpers were more likely to accept the conclusions made at
first blush without further questioning. A lack of controlled thinking was also more broadly
connected to their problematic beliefs and faulty reasoning.
4 A method called metacognitive training can be used to target their biases, which can
help people think more deliberatively. In this training, participants are confronted with their
own biases. They can learn about the missteps and other ways of thinking through the
problem at hand. It helps to chip away at participants’ overconfidence.
In everyday life, the question of whether we should think things through or instead go with
our gut is a frequent and important one. 5 Sometimes the most important decision we
make can be to take some more time before making a choice.
A.Happily, there may be some hope for jumpers.
B.Also, jumpers had problems with overconfidence.
C.But a fair number of individuals are quick to jump to conclusions.
D.It is certainly possible for them to overthink things to take a decision.
E.We plan to continue the work to trace other problems introduced by jumping.
F.The jumpers, however, did not engage in controlled reasoning to the same degree as non-
jumpers.
G.Recent studies show that even gathering just a little bit more evidence may help us avoid a
major mistake.

3.F 此段提到了两种思考路径the automatic system和the controlled system。

Passage 10
The Truth about Your Memory
What would you be without your memories? How important is your ability to remember the
past and to draw on it to help you know what to do next? I’ll answer for you: It’s right up
there with breathing and eating. 1
However, most people know little about memory. A study by research psychologists Daniel
Simons and Christopher Chabris asked people simple questions about memory and then
compared their answers with those of experts in memory research. 2 For instance, to the
question “Is there a ‘video camera’ in your head?”, 63% of people surveyed strongly agreed
or mostly agreed that human memory “works like a video camera, accurately recording the
events we see and hear so that we can review and inspect them later”. None of the experts
strongly agreed or mostly agreed that memory functions like that.
So how does memory work? 3 He means well and wants to help, but the best he can do
is tell you stories. And like all good storytellers, he edits for impact, efficiency, functionality,
and clarity. He tells you what he assumes you need to know. He also makes honest mistakes
—lots and lots of them. Sometimes he just gets confused and leaves out something important.
He could even include inaccurate information by accident.
In other words, there is no consistent or orderly sense to memory. A memory will be hidden
away and connected to other memories or concepts in ways that are not necessarily practical
or logical. 4 Memories come to us in a way that is similar to how archaeologists and
police detectives use bits of information to construct stories about past people and events.
5 Fortunately, enough has been revealed to offer us wise and safe guidance through
daily life. Your memory is best thought of as helpful input. We don’t need to remember every
detail about everything.
A.The researchers had a very tough time understanding human memories.
B.The human brain is still a mysterious universe in many ways, of course.

F.I prefer to describe it as something like an old man sitting by a campfire somewhere deep in

G.This is why a particular smell or sound may bring up a memory even though it wasn’t
important in the original experience.
要从选项中找到这个人,即F项中出现的an old man。
(enough has been revealed)”,指的也是探索人类大脑的成果,B项中出现的The human
Passage 11
When you’re behind the wheel, distractions(分心的事物) cost lives. Nevertheless,
drivers take selfies, and respond to text messages. 1
Smartphones are often at the root of these tragedies. As Big Tech sets its sights on modern
vehicles, it’s appropriate to ask if it’s time to limit attention-stealing technology that distracts
the driver.
Big Tech wants to take on the automotive industry. And it is good at grabbing both attention
and information from users. At first, the goal of these technology companies was to give away
services at no cost, simply to attract a customer base. 2 Their increasing thirst for
valuable user information has led them to the automotive industry, where a whole new world
of data awaits. Location data, frequent destinations, passenger preferences—such data is
found in family cars. 3
Mobile tech is walled off from vehicle operating systems by software that keeps infotainment
(information and entertainment) features away from the mission-critical driving electronics. If
auto makers give up their core operating system to tech powerhouses, they will essentially
become hardware suppliers to Silicon Valley.
4 Their responsibility is to focus attention on the road, providing vehicle information
and a small amount of entertainment options while getting passengers from place to place as
safely as possible. Smartphone makers and digital-media providers don’t have this priority.
They want eyes on their products, not on the road.
With electric vehicles transforming the auto industry, and artificial intelligence more common
than ever, we’re at a dangerous moment. 5 Because their hardware is wrapped around
families, they have a duty to keep them safe. The only way they can do that is to maintain
control of the driver’s seat.
The quality, safety and security will make or break trust in auto makers. Without it, cars will
be simply one more intrusive and risky mobile device.
A.Car companies have priorities opposed to those of Big Tech.
B.Now they exist to sell information about their users to advertisers.
C.They enjoy the convenience and fun brought by modern technology.
D.Car makers are, and should be, the most trusted technology companies in the world.
E.Currently video-streaming services are starting to be built into car operating systems.
F.And operating systems and autonomous-driving software are all gateways to this
information.

Passage 12
Pets are like our family members and their good health is something that is very
important to all pet owners. Just as the pollutants, such as carbon monoxide(一氧化碳)and
carbon dioxide in the air, affect our health, these same environmental nasties can affect our
pets too.
1 57% of dogs exposed to higher pollution levels developed brain diseases and showed
signs of neuro-problems. In a more recent study from the Journal of Veterinary Internal
Medicine, researchers found that cats with breathing problems were more likely to live in
households with higher indoor air pollution.
Air purifiers have been brought into use in recent years. They work to remove harmful
chemicals known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other environmental pollutants

from the air. 2 But are they safe for pets? How can we ensure that they aren’t harming
our furry friends?
3 The physical safety of using a mechanical device around pets is what we have to pay
attention to. Air purifiers come in various shapes and sizes, from small desktop units to large,
free-standing models. In terms of physical harm, there is an existing risk of our pet becoming
trapped in the electrical wire of our air purifier. Air purifiers are designed to be used in the
home around children and their internal mechanisms should also be safe for small tails of our
pets and other parts of their bodies. 4
Whether the air purifier improves or damages the health of our animals is also something we
have to consider. The air purifiers are safe for pets, but only if they do not produce any
ozone(臭氧)byproduct. 5 We should always stay away from the ones that produce even
minimal quantities. We are always on the safe side by picking a standard air purifier with the
classic 3-stage filtration(过滤)system of a pre-filter, HEPA filter and activated carbon filter.
Picking the wrong air purifier type can quickly make things worse for our pets. On the other
hand, picking the correct air purifier can lead to a big increase in the quality of life for them.
A.At present many homes are equipped with these useful devices.
B.Before buying an air purifier, we should keep two aspects in mind.
C.Pet owners always pay close attention to the physical health of their pets.
D.Even the smallest pets shouldn’t be able to access the insides of air purifiers.
E.This greatly depends on the type of air purifier and air cleaning technology used.
F.So always check the product specifications and try to find a model that does not produce
any carbon monoxide.

Passage 13
Walking in the city is very different from walking in the park. A small psychology study
suggests urban environments can slow your step and possibly increase your mental load. 1
It can ease your mind and quicken your pace. The findings show that natural settings may
potentially reduce cognitive(认知的) tiredness and improve reaction time straight away. 2
The first of the two experiments in the new study focused on people’s way of walking and
cognitive load. During this trial, participants were fitted with sensors and a dozen motion
control cameras were set up to watch them repeatedly walk down a 15-metre room at their
natural speed. The wall opposite them showed an image of either a nature scene or a city
scene. 3 On the whole, when walking in city settings, people reported that they felt more
uncomfortable and they walked at a slower pace, indicating a higher cognitive load.
4 In the trial, participants were asked to distinguish between basic visual shapes on the
computer while also in the presence of a natural or urban image(the same ones from the first
experiment).
Measuring reaction time in both natural and urban settings, the team found results to support
their idea. In urban environments, participants were slower in distinguishing between simple
shapes. 5 Our brains take longer to process. However, more research is needed to prove
that idea.
A.Nature influences us in many ways.

Passage 14
What makes you cry?Being moved by a sad movie, waving a loved one off, or getting
emotional after splitting up with your partner can all cause tears to roll down our faces. 1
When you think about it, shedding tears from your eyes can cause embarrassment or
confusion. But it seems to be an automatic response when we get sad or upset. 2
However, the feeling is the same—your cheeks puff up, your eyes tighten and before you
know it, tears are streaming down your face. Some of us may weep a little while others might
cry like a baby.

A study in the UK found that women admitted they cried about 72 times a year. This was, on
average, more than men. Adam Rutherford, lead researcher, says that the result has been
pretty much consistent with previous research. 3 Are they just more embarrassed about
showing their true feelings? The debate continues.
One place where we experience emotional and tearful outbursts is in the workplace. 4
Someone might be stressed with a heavy workload. And, as therapist Joanna Cross puts
it,“Crying is often a build-up of frustration(沮丧) and insoluble situations and it’s a bit of a
final straw(稻草)moment.”She describes how someone might start weeping when they’re just
asked to make a cup of tea. Actually, their stress has accumulated to the breaking point.
But crying in the office or elsewhere can be an effective stress reliever. It can actually make
you feel better. 5 Crying your eyes out shows others how you feel, so perhaps it’s a crying
shame that more of us, particularly men, don’t cry more often.
A.Then how do we cope with it?
B.This can be where emotions run high.
C.People reach their breaking point in different ways.
D.We all have the power to cry, but is that a good thing?
E.Maybe it eases or clears the negative feelings you’ve had.

Passage 15
Being independent is an important skill for people who want to take control of their
lives. Here are some tips on how to be independent.
Believe in yourself. If you don’t believe in yourself, then who else will? 1 No one can
speak the words on your lips and not everyone is going to agree with what you say. 2 If
you don’t have faith in yourself, you will always doubt yourself and turn to others for help
every time you have to make a decision. Try to move away from that.
3 Our parents care for us so much that they do everything in their power to raise us in a
fair and just environment. But the real world does not follow the same principle. You might
be treated badly for all sorts of unfair things: your skin color, your height, your weight, how
much money you have, and just about everything else that makes you who you are. 4
Stop caring about what other people think. This is the most important thing about being
independent. Stop worrying about other people’s opinions about your life, whether they are
thinking about your clothes, your choice of career, or your choice of the significant other. 5
If you always have the worrying thought, “But what will other people think if...” in the back
of your mind, then you will always be holding yourself back from doing your own thing.
A.Be your own hero.
B.Accept that life is not fair.
C.These are your decisions, and not anyone else’s.
D.As long as you have made a decision—just do it!
E.We are all different and have something unique to say.
F.So please remember: You have to be happy in spite of that.
G.Believing in yourself will make you trust your own decisions.

Starting a new training program, like most things, is stepping into an unfamiliar area. 1
Most people start out too hard, which leads to unnecessary tiredness and possible injury;or
they just burn out, feeling that the last thing they want to do is go out for another heavy,
painful run. Getting past that early period is the key to both running’s benefits and pleasures.
2 You may want to start running to make your heart stronger, to up your endurance for
other sports, or even just to fit into your tux(晚礼服)again. Those are all worthy goals and
setting them is a valuable aid to getting where you want to go.
If you like a challenge, your goal might be running the local 5K, or something more
ambitious, like finishing a Tough Mudder obstacle run or qualifying for the Boston Marathon.
A typical beginner who trains properly—without overdoing it—can safely finish a 5K after
about three months. 3
Whatever you decide to aim for, committing to it will help your progress greatly. 4
While a short, easy run a few times a week is better than nothing, it’s not nearly as exciting as
looking up at—then reaching—the next level.
Then don’t get ahead of yourself. 5 And gradually you can become a good run
beginner.
A.Figure out why you’re running.
B.The new training program will pay off.

Passage 18
If you’ve been feeling a lot sleepy in your daily life, here are some tips for picking up
your energy levels. But first, you should make sure if you’re experiencing some serious
illnesses. 1 , keep these tips in mind.
The first recommendation is to exercise. Although it may seem difficult to work out when
you’re tired, it turns out that physical activity can actually give you more energy. The second
thing to work on is to go to sleep early enough to get a full night’s sleep, preferably so that
you wake up naturally without the need for your alarm.
2 . Thus, another useful tip is to take a nap during the afternoon. Naps can restore your
mind and body without taking up too much time, regaining your energy and raising working
efficiency. The best length of time for a nap is about 20 minutes. Shorter, and you won’t get
much out of it. 3 .
4 . Drinking plenty of water and other fluids throughout the day is one important way to
stay energized, since dehydration (脱水)leaves us in low spirits. Some experts say that eating
smaller meals more often throughout the day can help maintain energy and balance blood
sugar levels. Be aware that people who are overweight are more likely to experience tiredness
easily. 5 , reducing extra weight could help you gain more energy.

have fun.
If you want to spend quality time with each other, you and your friends need to sacrifice your
screen time. 1 It could also be one of the house rules when you are together. However,
everyone in the group must be willing to cooperate or else the purpose might be defeated.

By turning off your devices it would focus the atmosphere more on your bonding. Everyone
could feel more welcomed and invited. 2
So what are the alternatives other than staring at the screen? Before the trend of high-tech
devices, a board game had always been the source of entertainment when a group of friends
wanted to have some fun. 3 Though they have digital versions you might not want to
miss the opportunity to actually interact (互动)with your friends face to face.
Another helpful way to start a conversation with your friends is through playing question
games. 4 But don’t worry. There are many different versions of question games you can
search online.
5 While it is important to enjoy your get-together, going into a purposeful conversation
is also necessary. You don’t know what your friends are going through, and making room for
a heart-to-heart talk might be what they need.
A.It is better for you all to agree on this matter.
B.So why not bring these classic activities back?
C.You and your friends could attend more to each other.
D.Being interactive is the key to bonding with your friends.
E.Turning off your devices could be the first step you can do.
F.Entertainment isn’t the only way to interact with your friends.
G.The main idea of this kind of game is to take turns in involvement.

Passage 20
Switching from childhood to adulthood can be challenging. Oftentimes, you may still
feel like a child. Work on not acting like a child by managing your emotions. 1
● Accept responsibility for your actions.
You should take responsibility for your actions, whether they are intentional (故意的) or
unintentional. 2 Failing to accept responsibility may seem like a good idea at the time,
but in the long term it will not benefit you. For example, if you accidentally back into your
neighbor’s car, let them know by writing them a note or knocking on their door. Then, correct
your mistake by paying for the damage.
● Show people respect.
Respect your partner, family members, friends, and strangers. 3 As you grow up and
mature, you should understand the concept of respect and why it is important. Showing
respect for others will also bring you more respect.
● 4
When you are faced with a conflict, it is important to keep your emotions in check. Control
your anger and avoid becoming aggressive. Take a deep breath, listen, and work through the
conflict with the other individual. Give yourself time to cool down if you are really angry.
This will prevent you from saying and doing things that you shouldn’t say or do in the heat of
the moment.
● Receive feedback (反馈) positively.

ideas. 2 It’s a good way of comparing different styles. Here you can make a distinction
between the country style and the contemporary style.
Fond of primitive style. If you are fond of primitive or traditional style, warmer colors are the
best for the room. These colors go with all kinds of cloth of old style and wooden furniture.

Passage 22
A Diet Without Enough Protein Can
Cause Depression
Depression is a condition so common. 1 The World Health Organization (WHO) calls it
“a leading cause of disability”. Difficulty in falling asleep, loss of appetite, and loss of ability
to concentrate are just a few of the other effects of depression. While life events such as the
loss of a spouse or a job may create a happening of depression, many cases come from within,
such as people’s diet.
As is reported, both before and during a happening of depression, those with the condition
show a “poor appetite”. 2 On the other hand, depression may be closely related to
protein. Many cases of depression happen to those who don’t eat properly, which then results
in lack of protein taken into the body.
3 It all comes down to amino acids (氨基酸). Proteins are made up of amino acids. Both
the human brain and nervous system use amino acids as a substance that creates a signal from
one brain cell to another or one nerve cell to another. With them communication between the
cells becomes possible.
4 But eight of them, the “essential” ones for communication between the brain cells,
must be eaten in one’s diet. So a diet which is lacking in protein lessens the signal being sent
from one brain cell to the next during a thought. The process can lead to twisted signals,
which can not only lead to depression, but also aggression. 5
A.It happens with aggression.
B.It may lead to serious effects.
C.But how lack of protein occurs?
D.There are 20 different amino acids.
E.But what does protein have to do with depression?

Passage 23
The Hotel Wake-up Call Gets Personal
Here’s a wake-up call:The hotel front desk will do one better than ringing your phone in the
morning. They’ll send an actual human being to your room. Don’t worry. They won’t come in
and kiss you good morning. 1
Never mind that most travelers nowadays have smart phones with built-in alarm clocks. 2
Here are some examples. At the Wolcott Hotel, if a wake-up call is unanswered, they will
send an employee to your door. At Las Ventanas al Paraiso, an employee shows up at your
room to wake you up with tea, coffee and breakfast bread. At the Mandarin Oriental, a person
rather than an automated system will call to wake you up. 3
Hotels have always taken the wake-up call seriously. 4 If you don’t get your call within
five minutes of the requested time, you won’t have to pay for your room. Travelers, too, still
want to have an option of a wake-up call. A study of 285 guests at Crown Plaza found that
53% considered a wake-up call very important.

5 In the late 1980s, hotels turned to automated systems. Then all you’d get was a ring and
silence. In the ever-competitive race for loyal customers, however, many hotels are now
getting creative with the wake-up call. Some hotels even have recordings of celebrity voices.
And more hotels will go back to the old in-person system of wake-up calls.
A.But they might bring you coffee.
B.If you don’t answer, you’ll get a wake-up knock.
C.Crown Plaza, for instance, has a wake-up call guarantee.
D.But the wake-up call became less personal over the years.
E.The hotel gets 15 to 30 requests for wake-up calls each day.
F.The human wake-up call is a way to personalize a guest’s stay.

Jones fell in love with flying after going out in his uncle’s small airplane. He adored it so
much that he’d planned to become a pilot when he grew up. But his hopes were dashed when
he was diagnosed with epilepsy(癫痫)at age 12. 1
Years later, after skydiving with an instructor in Europe, he went crazy about the sport. Free-

hadn’t had a seizure(发作)in more than six years,so his doctor gave him a letter stating that he
was fit to sign up for lessons.
3 Other staffers agreed. So today, at last, he’s about to step out of an airplane by
himself. All told, the jump should take about two minutes, from leaving the shelter of the
airplane to landing on the ground some 12,000 feet, or two miles, below. This is how it
goes:
As Jones prepares to jump, he nearly slips out of the airplane. That’s a bit messy, thinks
instructor McFarlane, though this kind of mistake is not unusual for first timers. 4 He
shouts to McFarlane,“Up! Down! Hard arch!” which means “Ready, set, go!” and jumps out
of the airplane.
Jumping just seconds behind Jones, McFarlane reaches him and is relieved to see that he has
recovered from his clumsy exit and is free-falling in the perfect “box man” position: belly to
the ground, his body arches upward with arms and legs spread for stability and control. 5
He flashes a thumbs-up.
A.So far, so good, thinks McFarlane.
B.“A star pupil,” one of the instructors called Jones.
C.As a rule, epileptics aren’t allowed to skydive alone.

Recently, I found myself anxious, mostly due to my repetitive schoolwork and staying

The year 2020 marks the beginning of the decade of the “yold”, or the “young old”,as
the Japanese call people aged between 65 and 75, who continue to work and stay socially
engaged. 1 The yold are more numerous, healthier and wealthier than previous
generations of seniors.
2 Of the 3.7 years of increased life expectancy(预期寿命)in rich countries between 2000
and 2015, says WHO, 3.2 years were enjoyed in good health. Working is one of the factors
that are helping people stay healthy longer. A German study found that people who remain at
work after the normal retirement age manage to slow the cognitive (认知的)decline. The yold
are also better off, while the wealth of all other age groups declines.
The yold are not just any group of old people. They are challenging the traditional
expectations of the retired. They are not people who are wearing slippers and look after the
grandchildren. 3 They become one of the fastest growing groups for airline business. They
spend much more, when taking a foreign holiday, than young adults. So they are vital to the
tourism industry. They are also changing education and finance. Because of the importance of
pensions, the yold are transforming insurance companies from passive distributors of fixed
annuities (年金)to financial service providers for customers who want to manage their
pension pots more actively.
4 They find that older workers have, if anything, slightly above-average productivity and
that teams of workers from multiple generations are the most productive of all. Societies
should be better off because public spending on health and pensions should be lower than
expected, as people work longer and need less medical care.
Today, some big things will have to change, under pressure from the yold themselves. The
most important is public attitudes towards older people and in particular the expectation that
60-somethings ought to quietly retire into the background. 5 The yold will demand that
companies become more age-friendly and, in the process, help change attitudes towards aging
itself.

Passage 29
Laziness is a state of inaction. It’s something that you do, not something that you are.
1 This is obvious but the mistake that many people make is identifying themselves as
someone who is lazy. Lazy people are the ones who don’t do anything. You can view a
student who never studies as lazy. You can see an employee who doesn’t do his work as
being lazy. 2 But are they really being lazy or are they acting lazily?
There is a huge difference between saying you act lazily sometimes and saying you are a lazy
person. 3 This is the myth of laziness. People who are lazy aren’t lazy; they simply are
people who are temporarily acting that way.

So what causes a person to be inactive? 4 If you give someone a good enough reason to
do something, they will do it. For example, if you are too lazy to go to the gym, would you go
if someone offered you a million dollars to go? If you are too lazy to clean out the garage,
would someone pointing a gun to your head help you take action?
5 Before you take action though, you need a compelling reason to do so. To motivate
someone who is lazy, what you need to do is help them find purpose and enough reasons to
work towards a certain goal.
A.The answer is a lack of goals and purpose.
B.They can be seen as underachievers or even bums.
C.Being lazy means you have no motivation to do anything.
D.In these cases, what the lazy person is doing is being lazy.
E.One suggests that your laziness is temporary while the other suggests that it’s permanent.
F.The bottom line of overcoming laziness comes down to finding enough reasons to take
action.
G.People who don’t seem to do anything just haven’t found a good enough reason to do
anything.
