Do you love holidays but hate the increase of weight that follows? You are not alone.
Holidays are happy days with pleasure and delicious foods. Many people, however, are worried about the
weight that comes along with these delicious foods.
With proper planning, though, it is possible to control your weight. The idea is to enjoy the holidays but not to
eat too much. You don’t have to turn away from the foods that you enjoy. The following suggestions may be of
some help to you.
Do not miss meals. Before you leave home for a feast(宴会), have a small, low fat snack. This may help to
keep you from getting too excited before delicious foods.
Begin with clear soup and fruit or vegetables. A large glass of water before you eat may help you feel full. Use
a small plate; a large plate will encourage you to have more than enough.
Better not have high fat foods. Dishes that look oily or creamy have much fat in them.
Choose lean meat(瘦肉). Fill your plate with salad and green vegetables.
If you have a sweet tooth, try mints(薄荷)and fruits. They don’t have fat content (含量) as cream and
chocolate.
Don’t let exercise take a break during the holidays. A 20- minute walk after a meal can help burn off extra
calories (卡路里).

Maybe no one forgets their first bike and there is no exception to a woman like me. Mine was a Schwinn
coaster bike, second-hand, painted red and yellow by its previous owner. I remember riding too fast down the big
hill on Springfield Avenue. I knew at once that the world was mine to explore.
A couple of years later, when I was 11, my grandmother visited from England, bringing me a bike. It was a
dark green one, with three gears (齿轮) and hand brakes(刹车). As the owner of the first English bike my friends
had ever seen, I was almost famous.
Unlike my coaster bike, it was light—riding it felt like flying. I rode past big stone houses with their huge
yards and trees. I rode past brick row houses. I rode alone and with groups of friends.
That beloved bike went with me to college, carrying me to the library and to classes. Beyond transport, it was
often a prop (道具) : Pushing it along as I walked the college paths made me feel less self-conscious. Somehow,
conversation flowed more easily on either side of a bike.
After college, I lived abroad for a while. Returning from London, I discovered to my horror that my parents
had sold my bike. For years after that, I didn’t have a bike that was really mine. Teaching in a New England prep
school, I simply rode whatever bikes its graduates had left behind. I rode around the little town on bikes with gears
and brakes that often failed. I did not take any of those bikes with me when I moved south to the coastal town
where I now live. But after a while I missed riding.
Finally, on a fall day, I bought a bike. Called a comfort bike, it has wider tires than my old bike and seven
gears. But it is green—a brighter green bike.
Still, I was a bit worried; I was a lot older. I brought the bike home and put on my helmet(头盔)—I’d never
worn a helmet before. Then I got on the bike. After a difficult start, I felt exactly as I was on that long-ago day onSpringfield Avenue: free. Soon I was riding along, watching the waves break. It seemed that everyone I passed
smiled. And I knew they all remembered their first bike and how it had set them free. I wanted to call back to them,
“It still can! ”

Wolves are important animals in the traditions and stories of most Native American tribes. To Native
Americans, wolves often stand for bravery. The animals also are signs of strength, loyalty, and success at hunting.
However, something happened. Perhaps wolves attacked too many people or ate too many farm animals. Whatever
the reason, wolves were killed in many areas. They also became known as villains(恶棍). From the wolves in some
films to the wolves in children’s stories, wolves get a bum rap(不公平待遇)in both literature and English
expressions.
For starters, there is the term “lone wolf”. The lone wolf isn’t a bad person. But they like to do things on theirown. Lone wolf makes you think the person doesn’t want to be around people because he or she dislikes them. In
news stories, you sometimes hear the terms “lone wolf attacker” or “lone wolf shooter”. These individuals are not
part of a larger group carrying out an attack. They are acting alone.
Now, let’s move on to the home. Parents might criticize their child for wolfing down their food. In other
words, the child eats very quickly and looks a little wild. And if someone says a child was raised by wolves, that
child has bad manners and is behaving like a wild animal. A wolf call is a whistle(口哨)or other noise made by a
man to show that he likes the way a woman looks. But a wolf call is not a nice thing. These men sound wild and
rude. A wolf at the door means someone to whom you owe(欠)money is waiting just outside your door.
28. What can we learn from Paragraph 1?
A. Wolves are thought little of now.
B. The wolves in some films are brave.
C. Wolves attack many people every year.
D. Wolves stand for strength in children’s stories.
29. What’s the meaning of the term “lone wolf ”in news stories?
A. Someone who feels lonely.
B. Someone who is less popular.
C. Someone who does things alone.
D. Someone who has little experience.
30. Which of the following has something to do with money?
A. A wolf call.
B. A wolf at the door.
C. Being raised by wolves.
D. Wolfing down something.
31. What does the text mainly tell us?
A. Too many wolves being killed.
B. Our misunderstanding about wolves.
C. Different meanings of the word “wolf”.
D. Some expressions about the word “wolf”.
D
Scientists have long known that a crow native to New Caledonia is able to use tools. The birds use them to
remove food from deep holes. Now, American researchers have discovered a second species of crow with the sameability. They reported on their experiments with Alala crows, which are from the Hawaiian Islands.
In the experiment, the researchers placed pieces of food in holes inside the wood. The holes were too deep for
the crows to reach with their beaks(鸟喙). But, by using small pieces of wood held in their beaks, Alala crows
quickly got the food. They used small objects as tools, sometimes changing them by shortening too-long sticks.
They also made tools from plant materials.
“The crows use their beaks as people use thumbs on their hands. Tool use is rare in the animal kingdom. ” said
Chritian Rutz of University of St. Andrews. “Current evidence strongly suggests that tool use is part of the species’
natural behavioral pattern(行为模式). These birds had no special training in the study, yet most of them were
skilled at handling stick tools. ”
Bird experts claim finding out that the crows use tools is important discovery. “It makes us rethink how to look
at the whole tool-use idea now and encourages us to go out and look for things that we may have ignored before. ”
All the Alala crows left in the world live in Hawaii. There were less than 20 Alalas left in the late 1990s when
scientists decided to bring them into a protected area. Now, it is reported that there are over 100 birds living there.
Scientists plan to release a small number of the birds back into the wild later.
32. What are the findings of American researchers?
A. Alala crows can also use tools.
B. It’s difficult for birds to look for food.
C. New Caledonia is home to some crows.
D. The Hawaiian Islands are full of rare birds.
33. What can we learn from the study?
A. The holes were very big and wide.
B. Alala crows could only use short sticks.
C. Alala crows got the food by working together.
D. Alala crows would deal with tools if necessary.
34. What do Chritian Rutz’s words mean?
A. Using tools comes naturally to Alala crows.
B. Using stick tools is not easy for Alala crows.
C. Alala crows’ beaks look like people’s hands.
D. Alala crows won’t use tools without being trained.
35. What do scientists plan to do with Alala crows?
A. Move all of them out of Hawaii.B. Increase the population of them.
C. Set some of them free in nature.
D. Build more protected areas for them.

Dear Wang Ping,
Nowadays fatness has become one of the serious problems. As to this, my opinions and advice are as follows.
Fatness does be harmful to our health, and it may causes many kinds of diseases. Fat figures are not pretty. So
it is necessary for us to be on a diet and take suitable exercise to prevent fatness. Those who are overweight should
take measures to lose weight to be healthy. Then eat more vegetables and fruit. Besides, make sure to have enough
sleep every day. Finally, you should keep a positive attitude to everything.
I think if you can do these aspects for a long time, you will be slim and energetic.
