When your pet has an emergency, first aid is not a substitute for veterinary (兽医的) treatment. However,
before you are able to get your pet to a veterinarian(兽医), knowing some basic first aid can help.
Bite Wounds
Approach the pet carefully to avoid getting bitten. Wear a mask for the animal and then check the wound.
Clean the wound with large amounts of saline solution(盐溶液). If it is not available, then regular water may be
used. Wrap large open wounds to keep them clean.
Bleeding
Apply firm, direct pressure to the bleeding area until the bleeding stops. Hold the pressure for at least 10

Breathing Stops

mouth and breathe directly into its nose—not the mouth—until the chest expands. Repeat 12 to 15 times per
minute.
Burns
Wash the burn immediately with large amounts of cool, running water. Apply an ice pack for 15—20 minutes.
Do not place an ice pack directly on the skin. Wrap the pack in a light towel or other covers. If the animal has large
quantities of dry chemicals on its skin, brush them off. Water may activate some dry chemicals.
Fractures(骨折)
Symptoms include pain, inability to use a limb(肢, 肢体). Wear a mask for the pet and look for bleeding. If
you can control the bleeding without causing more injury, then do so. Watch for signs of shock. Don’t try to set the
fractures by pulling the limb. Transport the pet to a veterinarian immediately, supporting the injured part as best asyou can.

As a first-aid responder, you never know what type of situation you might walk into, or who you’ll meet
along the way. That’s definitely been the case for Jeffrey Lanenberg, a 51-year-old first-aid responder since 1984.
Ten years into the job, Jeffrey received a call that reported that a man in his early 30s had fallen down in the
Mall of America. When Jeffrey and his partner arrived at the scene, they found the young male face down on the
ground. He had gone unconscious, making weak attempts to breathe. His wife stood beside him holding their small
son in horror. They quickly rushed to calm the man to keep him under control and offer necessary first aid. After
Jeffrey dropped the patient off at the neighboring hospital, he thought about the man and his family for a long time.
Jeffrey thought he had experienced everything under the sun until one random visit to Office Max three years
ago, where he met a man repeatedly walk back and forth while staring at him. As it turned out, the man was the
patient he had saved 20 years earlier.
“You gave me 20 years more than I ever thought I’d have, ” the man said. He thanked Jeffrey repeatedly and
told him he had someone he wanted him to meet. He stepped around the corner and reappeared with a 20-
something-year-old man. Jeffrey instantly knew that it was the son he had seen standing by his mother all those
years ago.“That day changed my life, ” Jeffrey said. “Before that, everything was about work. . . When I talk to my

Doctors in hospital emergency rooms often see accidental poisonings. A frightened parent arrives with a child
who swallowed a cleaning liquid. Or perhaps the harmful substance is a medicine. Or it might be a chemical
product meant to kill insects. These are common causes of accidental poisoning.
In cases like this, seek medical help as soon as possible. Save the container of whatever caused the poisoning.
And look on the container for information about anything that stops the effects of the poison. Save anything
expelled from the mouth of the victim. That way, doctors can examine it.
In the past, some people forced poisoning victims to empty the stomach. They need a liquid syrup of
ipecac(催呕剂) to do this. But an organization of children’s doctors no longer advises parents to keep syrup ofipecac. The American Academy of Pediatrics says some poisons can cause additional damage when they come back
up the throat.
Millions of people know a way to save a person who is choking on something trapped in the throat. The
method is commonly known as the Heimlich Manoeuvre or abdominal thrusts(腹部按压), which you can do by
getting directly behind a sitting or standing person. Put your arms around the victim’s waist. Close one hand to
form a ball. Place it over the upper part of the stomach below the ribs. Place the other hand on top. Then push
forcefully inward and upward. Repeat the abdominal thrusts until the object is expelled from the mouth. For
someone who is pregnant or very fat, place your hands a little higher than with normal abdominal thrusts.
Red Cross experts say taking these steps can save many lives. But they also warn that abdominal thrusts are
not for people who have almost drowned. They say the use of the method could delay other ways to restart
breathing in the victim. Abdominal thrust should be used only in cases where a near-drowning victim is choking on
an object.
To learn more about first aid, ask a hospital or organization like a Red Cross or Red Crescent Society for
information. There may be training classes offered in your area. If you know first aid methods, you can be calmer
and more helpful in case of emergency.

A retired United States soldier named Terry McGlade, who had served in Iraq and Afghanistan, says his dog
Major is a hero. He is specially trained to sense when McGlade is about to have a seizure, get his phone and dial
911 for help.
When Major had recently sensed an incident about to happen, and McGlade collapsed and hit the floor,
Major was able to get to McGlade’s phone, and more or less bite on the phone which is specially set up so that
when multiple buttons are pressed and held in, it goes into emergency call mode, and dials 911.
“He was actually able to get my phone out of my pocket, ” McGlade said.
The 911 operators who got the call from Major said they never heard him bark or anything. However, they
could hear what sounded like a confused man in the background, and did get quite suspicious after quite a few calls
from McGlade’s cell phone kept coming in. Quite clearly, Major was using his leg and also stepping on the screen
to get the phone to dial for help.
After Major was sure someone would be on their way to help, he then made his way out to the front of the
house to wait. When police and ambulance arrived, he led them into the house and right to McGlade, still in
distress.
“I probably would have been in severe trouble if he wouldn’t have called, ” McGlade said.
McGlade was taken to the hospital, where he was kept overnight for observation, but thanks to his best
friend, and now hero of the day, Major. He is feeling much better, and will make a full recovery with little risk of
lasting damage from this particular incident.

to find him playing and racing around his backyard, wearing his medicine-laden backpack and dragging his tank of
oxygen behind him in his little wagon. All of us who knew Tyler marveled at his pure joy in being alive and the
energy it gave him. Tyler’s mom often teased him by telling him that he moved so fast that she needed to dress him
in red. That way, when she looked out of the window to check on him playing in the yard, she could quickly find
