A small insect is getting a lot of attention in the United States. The rusty patched bumblebee (大黄蜂) is the
first of its species to be declared endangered in the lower 48 states — meaning every state except Alaska and
Hawaii. The rusty patched bumblebee is named for a rust-colored line on its back.
The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced this month it was adding the bee to its endangered species list.
The insects are “on the brink of extinction, ” according to the service. It said the bees were once found in 28
states. But there now are only small populations remaining in 13 states. The government agency will make a plan
to help the dying bees recover. The agency said that such a plan might help other insects, like butterflies.
U. S. officials think land owners can take small steps to help the rusty patched bumblebee. They say land
owners can be friendlier towards bees by using native plants in their gardens. The insects directly fertilize many
kinds of fruit and vegetable crops. And they fertilize grain crops used to feed cattle and milk cows. It costs billions
of dollars to duplicate the job the bees do for free. Land owners are also being urged to cut back on their use of
pesticide products. The officials also suggest that gardeners leave their plants alone at the end of the summer
instead of cutting them. That way, the bees will have a place to live over the winter.
The Fish and Wildlife Service says the rusty patched bumblebee was added to the endangered species list
partly because of habitat loss. Other reasons were disease, pesticides and climate change. Officials are worried
that other bees will suffer, too. Another species of bees in Hawaii is also endangered.

On Saturday 24 August 1918, it was raining cats and dogs and thundering over a city called Sunderland on the
northeast coast of England. The storm lasted for only about ten minutes. People were surprised to see that it was
not just rainwater falling from the sky. There were fish falling down, too! People came out to find out what was
happening. They could not believe their own eyes. There were thousands of fish—sand eels—lying on the ground.
They were about seven centimeters long, and all were frozen solid.
Sand eels swim together in large groups, often in sandy water, and are often found in large numbers in the
North Sea, which reaches out to the east of Sunderland. How was it possible for these sand eels to fall from the
sky and land on Sunderland?
Scientists believed the heavy thunderstorm that afternoon may have caused a waterspout. Waterspouts can be
formed when strong winds move quickly in a circle over water. They are so powerful; anything less than one
meter in length can be taken into them and forced into the clouds. The clouds carry whatever has been taken into
them for long distances — sometimes over 150 kilometers. It ’s very cold up there and everything soon freezes
solid.
For hundreds of years there have been reports of small animals being taken into the sky through waterspouts.
In 2009, dead tadpoles rained down on the city of Nanao in Japan. In 2012, fifty kilos of prawns fell from the sky
over Sri Lanka. In 2017, fish fell on the coastal city of Tampico In Mexico.
It must be a very strange experience to see fish raining down on you. It would probably hurt if one fell on
your head! With climate change, global warming and many reports of terrible natural disasters, will the time ever
come when it may really begin to rain cats and dogs?

More than 100 scientists from 25 countries have traveled to faraway places to collect wild crop seeds(种子) in
an effort to help battle climate change.
The scientists, who have been compared to the heroes of the “Indiana Jones” movies, traveled on foot,
four-wheeled vehicles(交通工具), boats, horses and even elephants to reach faraway areas. They faced extreme
heat, dust, and danger from wild animals. At last, they collected 4, 644 seeds of 371 wild relatives of 28 world
crops, many of which are said to be endangered.
The Crop Trust, an organization that works to save different kinds of crops, is directing the project. The
group is working in partnership with Britain ’s Royal Botanic Gardens and Millennium Seed Bank. Additional
financial support comes from Norway. The project is believed to be the largest organized international effort yet to
collect and protect crops ’ wild relatives. Hannes Dempewolf is a scientist and the head at the Crop Trust. He
said“What these seed collectors went through in the field resembles scenes from an Indiana Jones movie. ”
Some crops are threatened because of destruction of forests, climate change and expanded cities. The newly-
found wild seeds have developed so plants can grow in extreme temperatures, poor soils, and even in low rainfallareas.
A United Nations report says that food production is at risk because of a shortage of rain and other weather
extremes connected to climate change. The U. N. Food and Agriculture Organization says that the number of plant
species is quickly decreasing and people are depending on fewer species for food. Those wild seeds could be
important in feeding a growing human population in some areas and offer a largely unused source of diversity(多样
性) to crops.

Chito Shedden was a simple fisherman and tour guide from Siquirres, Limon Province, Costa Rica. He had a
broad range of interesting facts about nature, which helped his business quite a bit.

something very strange. There was a dying male crocodile(鳄鱼). When he stepped up to carefully examine theskinny reptile, he realized it had been shot through the head and then left eyes.

quickly, calling for the help of several brave friends to load the heavy reptile into his boat. He knew if he could

The kind and helpful fisherman started to heal Pocho with medicine, food, and more importantly, lots of care
and attention. Chito fed the crocodile a steady diet of chicken and fish. He bought medicine to prevent
infection(感染) and even slept by his side at night.
Affection was one of the most important factors. Chito gave him kisses and hugs. He talked to him and petted
him. “The crocodile needed my love to regain the will to live, ” he said. In time, Pocho improved enough to
returned to normal health. It was time for him to return to his own river in the wild. Chito and his friends loaded
the crocodile back into his boat and set him free in a nearby river. The two parted ways and Chito returned home
alone.

Chito awoke the next morning, and walked outside. To his surprise, a crocodile was sleeping in his
