Fuzhou Welcomes Its First Pair of Twin Red Panda Cubs

The Fuzhou Panda World has introduced its first pair of twin red pandas, a brother and a sister born in its newly opened breeding centre. Their images were released online during the National Day holiday and drew wide attention.

The twins were born on August 22 to Duoduo, a three-year-old female that became a mother for the first time. Because red pandas in Fuzhou are normally born in June or July, their arrival broke the city's previous record of August 16. The sister opened her eyes 28 days after birth, and the brother followed about two days later. Keepers now carry them onto a lawn at dawn and dusk, when the air is cool enough for the heat-sensitive animals.

Red pandas, listed as second-class protected animals, are timid and easily stressed. Mothers may abandon or even injure their young, so the survival rate of cubs is low. Huajuan, the stronger male, is able to feed on his mother's milk, while Huasheng, the smaller female, depends on hand-feeding by keepers who work in shifts all day. Why the Fall Webworm Caused an Outbreak This Autumn

Thousands of white caterpillars have appeared in Beijing and Tianjin, crawling over tree trunks and walls and drawing wide public attention. At a park in Beijing, visitors collected 37 jin of them, or about 120,000 insects, in three days.

Researchers have identified the caterpillars as larvae of the fall webworm, a major invasive pest native to North America that was first recorded in China in 1979. It has since spread to more than ten provinces and over 500 districts. In the region it breeds three generations a year, and the third, which is now leaving the trees to pupate in cracks and walls, causes the greatest damage.

According to experts, an unusually warm winter and a rainy summer explain the outbreak this year. A warm winter sharply reduces the death rate of overwintering pupae, which normally reaches 70 to 80 percent, and heavy rain washes pesticides off the leaves. The caterpillars do not sting people or carry viruses, though their hairs may cause allergies, but they feed on most broad-leaf trees and can seriously damage urban forests.

China's Deep-water Oilfield Marks a Rare Achievement

On October 3, the Liuhua oilfield became the first deep-water oilfield in China to produce more than two million tonnes of crude oil since its redevelopment. The milestone came as Haikui-1, Asia's first cylindrical floating production unit, left the Haiji-2 platform loaded with 42,000 tonnes of crude.

The project lies in the Pearl River Mouth Basin, where the average water depth is about 305 metres. It relies on Haiji-2, Asia's tallest deep-water jacket platform, on Haikui-1, and on an underwater production system, with 32 wells producing up to 3,900 tonnes a day. Crude oil is first treated on Haiji-2, piped to Haikui-1 for further processing and storage, and finally shipped ashore, a chain that Chinese engineers now control entirely on their own.

Decades of effort have allowed China to develop oil and gas in waters up to 1,500 metres deep, a capability shared by only a few countries. After ten years of technical research, engineers have extended the life of the Liuhua field by 30 years. So far the field, which began production 22 years ago, has yielded over 40 million tonnes of oil and reached its highest daily output.
