Fuzhou Panda World Welcomes Its First Twin Red Pandas

A pair of twin red pandas has become popular online in China. They live at the Fuzhou Panda World in Fujian Province. The boy is named Huajuan, and the girl is named Huasheng. The two babies met the public on the first evening of the National Day holiday.

The twins were born on August 22. Their mother is a three-year-old red panda called Duoduo. This is the first pair of twins in the new home, which opened in January. Their birth also set a local record, because Fuzhou red pandas are usually born in June or July. Huasheng opened her eyes after 28 days, while her brother needed about 30 days.

The twins are fed in different ways. Huajuan is stronger, so he drinks milk from his mother. Huasheng is smaller, so keepers feed her by hand and work in shifts around the clock. Red pandas are a protectedspecies, so healthy twins are very special to the park.

Experts Explain the Caterpillar Outbreak in North China

White caterpillars have been seen in large numbers in Beijing and Tianjin recently. They crawl on tree trunks and walls, and the topic has become popular on the Internet. At one park, visitors collected 37 jin of caterpillars in just three days.

Experts say the caterpillars belong to the fall webworm, an invasive moth from North America that was first found in China in 1979. It now lives in more than ten provinces and over 500 districts. In this area it produces three generations each year, and the third one is the most harmful.

Experts explain that the number rose because of a warm winter and heavy summer rain. The warm winter allowed more of the insects to survive, and the rain washed away the chemicals used to control them. The caterpillars do not bite people, but they eat the leaves of many broad-leaf trees, so the two cities have set up almost 3,000 monitoring points.

invasive adj. /ɪnˈveɪsɪv/入侵的

例:The fall webworm is an invasive moth.

generation n. /ˌdʒenəˈreɪʃn/代

例:It produces three generations a year.

harmful adj. /ˈhɑːmfl/有害的

例:The third generation is the most harmful.

survive v. /səˈvaɪv/存活

例:More insects survived the warm winter.

chemical n.

Rain washed the chemicals off the leaves.

monitor v. /ˈmɒnɪtə(r)/监测

例:Teams monitor the insects in the two cities.

pest n. /pest/害虫

例:The pest spreads across many districts.

New Milestone for China's First Deep-water Oilfield

On October 3, China's first deep-water oilfield reached a new milestone. The Liuhua oilfield has produced more than two million tonnes of oil since its redevelopment began. A huge round ship called Haikui-1 left the Haiji-2 platform with 42,000 tonnes of crude oil on board.

The oilfield lies in the Pearl River Mouth Basin in the South China Sea, where the water is about 305 metres deep. It uses Asia's tallest deep-water jacket platform, Haiji-2, and Asia's first cylindricaloffshore oil factory, Haikui-1, together with an underwater production system. There are 32 production wells, and the highest daily output reached 3,900 tonnes.

Oil from Haiji-2 is sent through undersea pipes to Haikui-1 for processing and storage, and then shipped to land. The whole process is controlled by Chinese companies. After ten years of research, engineers extended the oilfield's life by 30 years. So far, the field has produced more than 40 million tonnes of oil.
