In Jinping County, Yunnan Province, there is a magical place called Honghe Butterfly Valley （山谷）. Every year, from late spring to early summer, this valley becomes very lively. People can see the "butterfly explosion （爆发）". More than 100 million butterflies appear and stay in the valley for about a month. The valley is one of the two places in the world where the "butterfly explosion" takes place. The other one is in Mexico.
The valley's warm and rainy weather, along with its thick growth of plants, especially bamboo,makes it a perfect place for butterflies to live. There are more than 340 kinds of butterflies in the valley.
Sadly, this natural wonder is now in trouble. The number of butterflies has fallen from 400million in 2010 to about 100 million today. According to Yang Zhenwen, a butterfly expert, the main reasons for this are climate change, the disappearance of their homes, and the cias1used in farming. Cutting down bamboo and the rubbish left by visitors have also influenced the butterflies.
The good news is that the local government (Bf) is taking steps for the protection of this special environment. They have created the Butterfly Valley Management Regulations, the first set of rules in the world to protect butterflies.
More local people are now volunteering to raise butterflies. "Protecting forests, saving water,and caring for butterflies have become natural habits for locals," Yang said.
The local government also encourages visitors to help protect this beautiful place."Simple actions, like planting more bamboo and avoiding littering, can make a difference. After all, keeping this place safe is something we all should do," Yang said.
