二、拓展提升
I.阅读理解
A
If asked whether space exploration (探索) should continue, most Americans would give an
immediate response either in favour of continuing or in favour of ending space exploration.A
common response would be that space exploration is a waste of money. An average American,
uneducated on the subject, might believe that the government is wasting billions of dollars on the
research that has no value.Someone ignorant of the subject might say that a space shuttle goes
up once in a while and that is about all that happens.Research is ongoing and continues when
there are no shuttles being launched. This also costs the government money.Does the extreme
cost of space exploration make sense?
One argument is that the government is wasting money on the research not being used on
Earth.Actually, the money goes to workers and scientists that support National Aeronautics and
Space Administration (NASA) missions, and goes to major companies that play important roles
in major sectors of the US economy.Boeing is a partner of NASA for aircraft, the same
company that makes commercial aircraft for the airline industry.
Another benefit of continuing space exploration is the many spinoff technologies(衍生技术)
it provides. The artificial heart resulted from experiments on the space shuttle. The handheld
Jaws of Life used to save victims from car accidents originated from the system used to separate
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂the space shuttle from its booster rockets.Insulation in homes that keeps them warm and energy
efficient is based on the technology used to insulate the space shuttle.
There are direct benefits to the economy provided by NASA missions as well as spinoff
technologies. These advances are found in food, building materials, medical procedures and
the vehicles we drive. While it can be proven that billions of dollars that could be used elsewhere
is being spent on space exploration, the benefits it provides outweigh the negative aspects. As a
matter of fact, the money spent helps to improve the quality of our lives.
1.How is Paragraph 2 mainly developed?

B.By offering analyses.
C.By giving some examples.

2.What is the function of Jaws of Life?
A.To save people from traffic accidents.
B.To do experiments on the space shuttle.
C.To keep houses warm and energy efficient.
D.To separate the space shuttle from its booster rockets.

A.It has changed our life completely.
B.It costs too much money.
C.It has nothing to do with us.

Edmond Halley was an English scientist. He studied the observations of comets(彗星)which other
scientists had made. The orbit(轨道) of one particular comet was a very difficult mathematical
problem. He could not figure it out. Neither could other scientists who dealt with such problems.
However, Halley had a friend named Isaac Newton, who was a brilliant mathematician.
更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂Newton thought he had already worked out that problem, but he could not find the papers on
which he had done it. He told Halley that the orbit of a comet had the shape of an ellipse(椭圆形).
Then Halley set to work. He figured out the orbits of some of the comets that had been
observed by scientists. He made a surprising discovery. The comets that had appeared in the years
1531, 1607, and 1682 all had the same orbit. Yet their appearance had been 75 or 76 years apart.
This seemed very strange to Halley. Three different comets followed the same orbit. The
more Halley thought about it, the more he thought that there had not been three different comets as
people thought. He decided that they had simply seen the same comet three times. The comet had
gone away and had come back again.
It was an astonishing idea! Halley felt certain though(然而) to make a prediction(预言) of
what would happen in the future. He predicted that this would appear in the year 1758. There were
53 years to go before Halley's prediction could be tested. In 1758 the comet appeared in the sky.
Halley did not see it, for he had died some years before. Ever since then that comet has been
called Halley's comet, in his honour.
4.Edmond Halley figured out the orbit of .
A.some different comets appearing several times
B.the same comet appearing at different times
C.three different comets appearing at the same time
D.several comets appearing at the same time
5.Halley made his discovery .
A.by doing experiments
B.by means of his own careful observation
C.by using the work of other scientists
D.by chance
6.When did Halley make a surprising, but correct prediction?
A.In 1704. B.In 1705. C.In 1706. D.In 1707.
7.This passage in general is about .
A.Halley and other scientists

III.七选五
Doctors say anger can be an extremely damaging emotion, unless you learn how to deal
with it. They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches,
emotional problems and possibly cancer.
1 Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Others burst with anger,
and scream and yell. But other people keep their anger inside. They can not or will not express it.
This is called repressing anger.
For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person’s
health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain releases the same
hormones (荷尔蒙). They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure,or sugar into the
blood,etC. 2
Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe
that those who express anger violently may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they
believe that those who keep anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.
3 They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the
anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is,they say,“ 4
Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably.

you angry. 5

One possible version:
When I was on the Earth, I worked in a big, crowded city and lived a busy life. Most people
there lived in high-rise flats and drove to work. As a result, there were frequent traffic jams and
accidents. And the air was full of smoke.
But there were many ways for people to get relaxed after work. Some went to cinemas or
theaters to watch movies or plays. Some preferred to play all kinds of sports games in parks.
Others held parties to meet new friends and entertain themselves.
So you see, we have a different lifestyle here. Anyway life is changing for the better.
