The winter solstice(冬至)is an important solar term in the traditional Chinese calendar, and
means the coming of winter. It generally occurs between December 21st and 23rd. According to
the traditional Chinese calendar, one year is divided into twenty-four solar terms. On this day, in
the northern hemisphere the period of daytime is the shortest of the year and the period of night is
the longest.
In northern China there is a custom of eating dumplings during the winter solstice. The
tradition of eating dumplings during the winter solstice has its origin in early times. It is said that
dumplings were invented by Zhang Zhongjing, a well-known doctor in the Eastern Han Dynasty.
One winter, he noticed that many people's ears were frostbitten, which made him sad. In
order to prevent and cure the freezing injury caused by cold, he asked his followers to boil mutton,
chilies and other ingredients with medicinal properties in a pot for fending off cold. After these
were boiled, they ladled(舀)the mutton and other ingredients out of the pot, cut them into pieces,
and then wrapped them in dough skins in the shape of ears. Afterwards, they put these into the pot
to boil again.
On the day of the winter solstice, people whose ears were frostbitten were sent to eat the
dumplings. People who ate dumplings felt warm from head to toe and had their cold injury healed.
Thereafter, people ate dumplings every winter solstice. Then it became a custom that if you eat
dumplings during the winter solstice, your ears won't get frostbite.
Afterwards, Zhang Zhongjing died on the day of the winter solstice. In order to honour him,
every year on the day of the winter solstice every household makes dumplings.

The Sister Rice Festival is held every year in Guizhou's Taijiang County, where 97 percent of
the 168,000 people are from the Miao ethnic(民族的) group. It is an ancient tradition, which
brings men and women together through food, gifts and music.
In the days before the festival, young women gather leaves and wild flowers, which they use
to dye(给……染色)sticky rice with bright colors. This brightly colored rice, known as Sister Rice,
gives the festival its name. During the festival, the young women dress in beautiful traditional
clothes with large amounts of silver jewelry .
The festival includes parades, horse races and musical performances. But the real focus is the
interaction between the young women and the young men who visit from surrounding villages and
sing songs. In one traditional type of song, a man and a woman take turns to sing to each other,
and the first one to make a mistake loses the game. The loser must give the winner a gift, but the
winner is expected to give a gift in return, too.
After meeting the men, the women send them home with a bamboo basket containing dyed
rice and hidden objects with special meanings. For example, a pair of chopsticks indicates that she
wants to marry the man, while garlic shows that she is not interested.
One of several stories about the festival's origin is about a girl and a boy who fell in love. The
girl's parents wanted her to marry her uncle's son. She refused, and the boy likewise refused to
marry anyone else. For a time, they could only meet in a field and pass hidden messages to each

Mikah Frye，a 9-year-old boy，was walking down the streets with his grandmother
discussing Christmas gifts when he saw some homeless people struggling to stay warm in the cold
night，Then he was thinking about a way to help the homeless to spend a warm Christmas．

of Bahia State. Before he was even one year old, his mother took him to his first carnival event.

the Washington area. Here, the season isn’t celebrated on city streets as in Brazil, where it is warm
summer. February is one of Washington’s coldest months.So, the events take place at theatres,
restaurants and other places.
Carnival is one of the world’s biggest celebrations. In many countries, activities take place
for a few weeks each year and include huge parades(游行) and street parties with live music.
Carnival goers wear colourful, themed clothing and masks(面具).

The Dragon Boat Festival falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, so it's also called the
Double Fifth Festival. On that day, we usually eat zongzi—sticky rice dumplings wrapped in reed
leaves. As the festival name shows, people hold dragon boat races to celebrate it, especially in the
southern places in memory of Qu Yuan, a great poet of ancient China. Therefore, it's regarded as a
day of mourning and cherishing the memory of Qu Yuan.

It was a perfect day. Dad and I drove down the road around the lake and turned into the
parking area. Dad pointed to the lake. “That's where you are to find the workers,” he said.
We came to a stop and I got out of the car.
And then I saw a white bird with a brown head and skinny legs. It cried and thrashed(剧烈扭
动) in the dirt in front of the cars. Its wings looked broken. Suddenly it shrieked (尖叫)and flew
off.
“Dad,” I called, but my father was watching the balloons.
“It's a killdeer(双胸斑沙鸟).” I turned to see a silver-haired old woman. “It has a nest here
somewhere,” she said. “In the parking area?” I asked. She nodded firmly. “It was a nesting place
before it became a parking area.”

the balloons are ready to come down.”
“Dad! I am...” A truck roared over the hill. That was Mr. J. Dad jumped onto the truck.
“What's the matter? We must go now,” said Dad angrily from the truck.

woman and I were there, and the killdeer was watching over its eggs in the nest, which were
perfectly safe. Though I missed the Balloon Festival, the day was still meaningful to me.
