The winter solstice(冬至)is an important solar term in the traditional Chinese calendar, and means the
coming of winter. It generally occurs between December 21st and 23rd. According to the traditional
Chinese calendar, one year is divided into twenty-four solar terms. On this day, in the northern hemisphere
the period of daytime is the shortest of the year and the period of night is the longest.
In northern China there is a custom of eating dumplings during the winter solstice. The tradition of
eating dumplings during the winter solstice has its origin in early times. It is said that dumplings were
invented by Zhang Zhongjing, a well-known doctor in the Eastern Han Dynasty.
One winter, he noticed that many people's ears were frostbitten, which made him sad. In order to
prevent and cure the freezing injury caused by cold, he asked his followers to boil mutton, chilies and other
ingredients with medicinal properties in a pot for fending off cold. After these were boiled, they
ladled(舀)the mutton and other ingredients out of the pot, cut them into pieces, and then wrapped them in
dough skins in the shape of ears. Afterwards, they put these into the pot to boil again.
On the day of the winter solstice, people whose ears were frostbitten were sent to eat the dumplings.
People who ate dumplings felt warm from head to toe and had their cold injury healed. Thereafter, people
ate dumplings every winter solstice. Then it became a custom that if you eat dumplings during the winter
solstice, your ears won't get frostbite.
Afterwards, Zhang Zhongjing died on the day of the winter solstice. In order to honour him, every
year on the day of the winter solstice every household makes dumplings.

The Sister Rice Festival is held every year in Guizhou's Taijiang County, where 97 percent of the
168,000 people are from the Miao ethnic(民族的) group. It is an ancient tradition, which brings men and
women together through food, gifts and music.
In the days before the festival, young women gather leaves and wild flowers, which they use to
dye(给……染色)sticky rice with bright colors. This brightly colored rice, known as Sister Rice, gives the
festival its name. During the festival, the young women dress in beautiful traditional clothes with large
amounts of silver jewelry .
The festival includes parades, horse races and musical performances. But the real focus is the
interaction between the young women and the young men who visit from surrounding villages and sing
songs. In one traditional type of song, a man and a woman take turns to sing to each other, and the first one
to make a mistake loses the game. The loser must give the winner a gift, but the winner is expected to give
a gift in return, too.
After meeting the men, the women send them home with a bamboo basket containing dyed rice and
hidden objects with special meanings. For example, a pair of chopsticks indicates that she wants to marry
the man, while garlic shows that she is not interested.
One of several stories about the festival's origin is about a girl and a boy who fell in love. The girl's
parents wanted her to marry her uncle's son. She refused, and the boy likewise refused to marry anyone
else. For a time, they could only meet in a field and pass hidden messages to each other through rice in a
bamboo basket. Finally, the pair overcame their parents' opposition and were allowed to marry.
The Sister Rice Festival is perhaps the oldest festival in Asia that encourages love.

Mikah Frye，a 9-year-old boy，was walking down the streets with his grandmother discussing
Christmas gifts when he saw some homeless people struggling to stay warm in the cold night，Then he
was thinking about a way to help the homeless to spend a warm Christmas．
That thought stayed in Mikah Frye's mind and when he reached home，Mikah informed his parents
not to buy the Microsoft XBox gaming device he had asked for earlier．Mikah realised that by not buying
the $300 device，he could instead donate over 30 blankets to the homeless．He knew how much it meant
to be warm in the cold holiday season．
Three years ago，Mikah and his parents were the ones living in a homeless shelter．Having suffered
a financial crisis，they too had lost their house，not knowing where their next meal would come from and
sharing a blanket every night．Mikah was six years old then but he remembered what it was like to have to
give back that precious blanket every morning．
Reaching out to the emergency shelter programme that looked after them 3 years ago，the family
donated 60 blankets in the end，each with a personalized message of hope in Mikah's handwriting stating:
"They gave me a blanket，but I had to leave it．That's why I want you to have your own blanket．
Today，I live in my own house，and someday you will too．Your friend，Mikah．"
The homeless people at the shelter may not have been able to give Mikah a Christmas gift in return but
his gesture was noted by the billion dollar company Microsoft who made sure that Mikah was fooled into
visiting their store so that Santa Claus could personally deliver an XBox from the company to him as a
reward for making the top of "Santa's list of nice boys" that year．

Vidal first experienced Brazil’s carnival celebrations as a baby living in Salvador, the capital of Bahia
State. Before he was even one year old, his mother took him to his first carnival event.
The cultural traditions of Salvador have stuck with him. And, Vidal, a trained musician, now performs
the typical music of Bahia in the U.S. He often plays in the Washington area.
February is the carnival season in Brazil and other countries around the world. Even the Washington
area celebrates the season. Last week, Vidal, Brazilian singer-songwriter Cissa Paz and other musicians
performed here for a carnival celebration. Performing in Washington and other U.S. cities has helped Vidal
and Paz stay close to their Brazilian roots(根).
“Living in the U.S. now and not being able to enjoy carnival as I used to in Brazil with my friends and
family is really heartbreaking. And that was the reason why I decided to start making my own events—
carnival parties—just to get connected to my roots, to my happiness.”
