A Working as a vet(兽医), I met a family that taught me an unforgettable lesson. They came to my clinic with their dying dog, Coco. I examined Coco and found she was old and had a serious illness. I told the family we couldn’t do anything for Coco, and that euthanasia(安乐死) would be the best for the dog. On that day, their little boy Eric seemed so calm, patting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if Eric understood what was going on. The little boy seemed to accept Coco’s death without any difficulty. We sat together for a while after Coco’s death. I explained that animals’ lives are shorter than human lives. Eric, who had been listening quietly, said, “I know why.” He said, “People need a lifetime to learn how to live a good life—like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?” The 6-year-old continued, “Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay as long.” I’d never heard a more soft-hearted explanation as to why animals’ lives are so short. It has changed the way I live. I see every day as the day that my life could be easily taken away, so I try to live my life to the fullest. 1. What was the matter with Coco? A. She had a stomachache. B. She had a headache. C. She was old and dying. D. She was hurt by her friend. 2. Why was Eric so calm while patting the dog for the last time? A. Because he didn’t know what was going on. B. For the past year,Lanster and Kelly Moran, his classmate, have been hosting fancy dinner parties at Lanster's parents' home.Their meals have 17 courses and are all made by them.Their guests used to give them gifts to thank them, until the pair decided to do something nice for charity."We got some really great Miami Heat tickets,a nice watch, and many kitchen machines," Lanster said." But we wanted to make this something positive for people rather than us." Lanster and Moran focused on Common Threads,a charity (慈善机构) that helps to teach kids in poor neighbourhood to cook and make healthy eating choices. The young cooks ask their guests to give however much they want as payment for their meals. It all goes to Common Threads because Lanster's parents cover their food costs. After their last 12-person event,Lanster and Moran gave $1,600 to the charity. Now,they're taking their show out of the kitchen and on the road.Lanster and Moran have started to organise private dinner parties in a similar way: the host pays for the ingredients(食材),and the guests make a donation (捐赠) to a charity. Instead, it just breaks into smaller and smaller pieces. No one knows exactly how much plastic is in the oceans. Since the sea is so large and so deep, it s hard to get a good idea of how much plastic it contains. But in recent years, scientists have made greater efforts to get a more accurate idea. Some studies have suggested that since 1950. about 17 million metric tons(公吨)of plastic have entered the Atlantic Ocean. Scientists believe that the plastic previously found on beaches and on the surface of the water is only about 1% of all the plastic in the oceans. Researchers from the United Kingdom (UK) want to find out where the other 99% was. For two months in 2016 the researchers took samples at 12 different locations in the Atlantic Ocean from the UK to South America. They collect water samples from three different depths in the top 200 meters. By running the water through special fllters(过滤器),they were able to collect the micro plastics, which they could view and study with a microscope. Based on their measurments. the researchers learned that just the top 200 meters of the Atlantic Ocean holds between 12 and 21 million metric tons of plastics. But the Atlantic Ocean is very deep, and the scientists only checked the top 200 meters. They say that if micro plastics are spread through the rest of the Atlantic like they were in the top 200 meters, thin there arc probably about 200 million metric tons of micro 更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂plastics in the Atlantic Ocean. Though the scientists only studied the Atlantic ocean the results suggest that there may be far more micro plastic in all oceans than we realized. The problems go far beyond ocean pollution. Micro plastic particles have been found just in everywhere around the world from Antarctica to the bottom of the sea. Scientist predict that the amount of plastic entering our oceans is likely to triplet over the next 20 years. Having a good idea of how much plastic is already then might be a good first step to fighting the problem. 8. What docs the underlined word “decompose” in Paragraph 1 mean? A. turn up B. break down C. give off D. bring out 9. What is the latest idea about the plastic in the seas? A. Previous data of plastic consists of only a very small part. B. The practical response is to kill one man to save five lives, which 33. 5 percent of smartphone users chose, compared to 22. 3 percent of PC users. “What we found in our study is that when people used a smartphone to view classic moral problems, they were more likely to make more unemotional, reasonable decisions when presented with a highly emotional dilemma, ” Dr. Albert Barque-Duran, the lead author of the study, told City University of 更多资料添加微信号:hiknow_007 淘宝搜索店铺:乐知课堂London. “This could be due to the increased time pressure often present with smartphones and also the increased psychological distance which can occur when we use such devices compared to PCs. ” As for why the researchers started this study, Dr. Barque-Duran noted, “Due to the fact that our social lives, work and even shopping take place online, it is important to think about how the contexts where we typically face moral decisions and are asked to engage in moral behavior have changed, and the impact this could have on the hundreds of millions of people who use such devices daily. ”It’s clear that we need more research on how our devices affect our moral decision-making because we’re using screens at an ever increasing rate. 12.
