A. Hospital Programs
Hospitals usually need some help and a lot of them offer winter volunteer programs. Here are some examples from
Children’s Hospital, most of the work is easy and relaxing. You can help the nurse clean the sheets, change water for
flowers, or just talk to the patients to make them happy and warm.
B. Conservation(保护) Programs
In school, you’re probably already spending a lot of time indoors, so why not do some good outdoors while you’re
in winter holiday? Volunteer at your local park, beach, forest, or other places, do outdoorsy things like watering
plants, cleaning up litter, and improving wildlife habitat(野生动物栖息地). You could also join a conservation group
to protect these natural places.
C. Museum Programs
Holiday is the perfect time to learn something new at museums across the country, and some museums even offer
winter camps or special programming for visitors. Be a part of history(or science, or art, or music) at these places by

Do you remember the name of your kindergarten teacher? I do. Her name was Mrs White. And I thought she
must be some older relation of Walt Disney’s Snow White, because she had the same bright blue eyes, short dark hair,
red lips and fair skin.
I don’t remember much about what we learned in her class, but my mother once told me that we used to write a
lot. And I would bring back what I wrote and she would look at it. She found there were so many mistakes. But no
red corrections. And always a star. Sometimes even a Good! It would make my heart fly with happiness. But it worried

学科网(北京)股份有限公司my mother, so one day when she went to meet Mrs White for one of those Parent-Teacher meetings, she asked her
why she never corrected my mistakes and why she never pointed out my spelling and grammatical mistakes with a
red pen.
Mrs White told my mother that the children were just beginning to get excited about using words, about
forming sentences. She didn’t want to make them lose that enthusiasm(热情) with red ink. Spelling and grammar
can wait. The wonder of words won’t… And maybe she didn’t say it exactly like that. It was a long time ago. And
what my mother gave me was the gist(大意) of what she could remember. The rest I added in because I grew up
learning to use words with loving confidence like that.
Now I understand if Mrs White had used her red pen more precisely(精确地), I maybe wouldn’t be telling you
about this now. I look back now and think she must have been a wonderful teacher to exercise such red-pen-
restraint(克制). She allowed the joy, wonder and excitement of expression flower to bloom. All of us loved writing
at that time.
I used to misspell beautiful a lot. I couldn’t remember if the e went before the a. My teacher in high school was
angry with me because she pointed out this mistake for many times. At last, I could put e and a into their right places.
Pretty is easier to spell, but it doesn’t hold as much as you mean sometimes. Thanks to Mrs White, I had no worries
about writing even if I couldn’t quite spell it out. Because life isn’t Pretty. It’s Beautiful.
24. Mrs White was ________.
A. the writer’s kindergarten teacher
B. the writer’s relative
C. the writer’s old friend
D. the writer’s teacher in the middle school
25. The writer’s mom was worried because ________.
A. she didn’t know how to read
B. the teacher had some spelling mistakes in her own paper
C. the teacher didn’t correct the writer’s mistakes with a red pen
.
D she didn’t like writing when she was young
26. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Mrs White wasn’t good at spelling.
B. Mrs White hoped her students to keep up their interests in writing.
C. Mrs White wanted to teach her students how to use red pencils.
D. Mrs White asked her students to correct mistakes by themselves.

Earth Day is April 22. Every year, people around the world do something to help to care for the environment.
They carry out all kinds of activities to better the planet’s health.
One way to support this goal is to grow native(本地的)plants in your area. This helps wildlife and native plants
evolve(进化) together. For many of these animals, plant pollen (花粉) is their food.
Native insects often cannot recognize(认识) non-native plants as food. This means they do not collect the
pollen or spread plants’ seeds. Planting non-native plants creates “food deserts(荒 漠)” for insects including bees,
birds, bats, butterflies and more.
Doug Tallamy is a professor of entomology at the University of Delaware. Entomology is the study of insects.
He has been watching the plants and insects in the community for years and found that non-native plants could harm
the natural food chain(食物链), which was bad for the environment.
“Plant choice matters,” he said. “The plants we choose to beautify our community should depend on how much
life can live there. If we do not choose the right plants, they will not beautify the environment and some of them may
cause harm to the environment.”
Humans depend strongly on insects. Without them, we would have no flowering plants, which would harm the
food web that supports important animals.
Insects support plants that provide oxygen, clean water, take in CO and make the soil rich. Without insects, the
2
living parts of the earth would not exist(存在) and humans could not live on the earth, Tallamy said.
In addition to providing food and home for insects and other wildlife, native plants are able to grow easily and
do not need much care. That means less watering and less fertilizing(施肥). The situation is a win-win for gardeners
and insects.
27. People can help to care for the environment by ____________.
A. growing all kinds of plants around their neighborhood
B. growing native plants around their neighborhood
C. observing the plants around their houses
D. feeding insects with non-native plants
28. What did Doug Tallamy find in his study?
A. Native plants could break down the food chain.
B. Food deserts were mainly caused by insects and birds.
C. Non-native plants could grow easily and need less water.
D. Non-native plants had bad influences on the local environment.

A. Native plants can benefit the gardeners and insects.
B. Insects should be provided with different kinds of food.
C. Non-native plants can spread their seeds fast in new environment.
D. Humans could live on the earth without insects.

People experience a flow state when they become deeply focused on an activity that is challenging but not
outside of their skill set. Getting into a flow state helps people learn and further develop their skills while also
increasing their enjoyment of those skills.
In the 1960s, psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi noticed that many artists fell into this single- minded state
while doing their creative work. His research on the topic showed that people can experience flow during different
situations, including games like chess, sports like surfing or rock climbing, professional activities like performing
surgery, or creative activities like writing or painting. Time seems to pass more quickly than usual when people are
in this state. He used the term “flow state” to describe this experience because many of the people he interviewed
about it said the experience was like being “in flow”.
The state of flow can be brought about by any experience, whether work or play, he explained, “It is the full
participation of flow, rather than happiness, that makes for excellence in life. Flow is also valuable for learning and
developing skills. He noted the value of increasing challenges so they are just a little outside one’s skill set. This
encourages the person to stay in the flow state while also helping them to learn new skills.
Many people are interested in achieving flow because it can help improve performance and increase happiness.
This can be different for different people. While one person may enter a flow state while gardening, another may do
so while drawing or running a marathon. The key is to find an activity that the person is passionate(热情的) about
and finds it enjoyable.
,
In addition the activity must be challenging enough to need people to raise their skill level just beyond their
abilities. Finally, the balance between skill level and challenge must be optimal to achieve flow. If the challenge is
too high, it can lead to anxiety(焦虑); if the challenge is too low, it can lead to boredom. High challenges and high
skills will result in deep involvement(参与) in the activity and create the desired flow state.
Today it can be hard to ensure one’s environment is good for flow. If the noise keeps appearing, it won’t lead to
a flow state. You should turn off mobile phones if you want to achieve flow.
30. What can we learn from Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s research?
A. People feel bored when they are in the state of flow.
B. Time seems to pass more slowly when people experience flow.

D. People may experience flow when they deeply keep their minds on something.
31. What does Paragraph 3 mainly tell us?
A. The history of the research.
B. The benefits of a flow state.
C. The difficulties of learning new skills.
D. The challenges of a flow state.
32. The word “optimal” in Paragraph 5 means ________.
A. opposite B. new C. suitable D. familiar
33. The writer thinks ________.
A. people get into a flow state in all kinds of environment
B. people feel bored when the challenge is too high
C. anxiety can help people get into a flow state
D. both high challenges and skills are necessary for a flow state
