I didn’t know of Santa Claus (圣诞老人) until the second grade when my family moved to America. My
classmates told me that a fat man would come and put toys in one’s stocking (长筒袜) on Christmas Eve.
Finally, Christmas Eve arrived. I took out my longest, cleanest stocking and put it on my bed. However,
when I woke up early on Christmas Day and checked the stocking, there was nothing in it—There was no Santa in
the world!
From then on, I told my friends the story every December. I had to tell it in a funny way, or I would cry.
How could I know that Santa was just late? Nine years ago, on Christmas Eve, a man knocked on my door.
He said, “I’ve been looking for you for twenty-five years.” He gave me a red stocking filled with candy and toys,
and left. On top of the stocking was a card. It read: “For Becky—I have missed you since the second grade, but
you’ve always lived in my heart. Santa.” Then I recognized (认出) Jill’s handwriting. I met her just two months
ago. I later discovered that the man was her father. Jill had seen the sadness in my eyes and decided to do
something with her father.
Now I believe that Santa is real. Santa lives inside kind people. He listens to friends and brings warmth and

There are many colors in nature. But do you think that a color has weight (重量)? I think you’ll say “no”.
But I’m afraid you are wrong. If you don’t believe it, you may do a small experiment (实验).
First, put two objects (物品) with the same weight into two boxes. Then cover the boxes. Third, wrap (包
裹) one box with a red piece of paper, the other one with a white piece of paper. OK, now hold the boxes with
your hand one by one. It is certain that you will think the red one is a little heavier.
Why do you think so? A scientist found that different colors have different weights in man’s mind. That is
to say, every color has its own weight in our mind.
The scientists told us that colors also have smell. Can you smell colors? Of course not. Then why did the
scientists say so? That is because every color stands for (代表) a kind of light with a certain wavelength (波长). It
reaches our brain (大脑) through sense organs (感觉器官).
In this research, scientists say that people accept the colors they like, and refuse the colors they hate. So
your body and mind will be healthy by using the colors you like. Or you’ll be nervous or even get ill. For
example, you like blue and hate red. If you stay in a room with red windows, wallpaper and tables and chairs for
two hours, you’ll feel you have been there for four hours. But if the room is blue, you’ll feel you have been there
for only an hour. And, if a person walks out of a blue room and into a red room, his temperature will rise. That
means our body temperature will change with different colors.
13.From the experiment, we know that ________.
A.the two boxes don’t have the same weight B.colors can change the weight of an objectC.the red paper is heavier than the white paper D.colors have different weights in people’s mind
14.From the fourth paragraph, we can infer (推断) ________.
A.the smell of colors is changeable (可变的) B.people can sense (感受) the light from colors
C.people can smell the colors through the nose D.all the colors have the same smell
15.Which of the following is TRUE?
A.White color is heavier than red color.
B.People may get ill if they refuse the colors they don’t like.
C.People can stay longer in red rooms than in blue rooms.
D.People’s body temperature will change with different colors.
16.We can know from the passage that ________.
A.red color is bad for our health B.people may get nervous in a red room
C.blue color can raise (提升) our body temperature D.colors can influence (影响) our mood (情绪) and
health

I have read many interesting and meaningful books.
Among all the books I’ve read, Who Moved My Cheese is my favourite. It’s so educational that I’ve read it
twice. Four mice find lots of cheese somewhere happily. However, some days later, they can’t find any cheese
there. Then some of them try other places. But the others just feel upset and don’t take any action.
The book tells us there are changes in our life. We must change ourselves to face the changing environment,
or we won’t succeed.
