Store Scent
What is the first thing you notice when you walk into a shop? The products displayed (展示) at the
entrance? Or the soft background music?
But have you ever noticed the smell? Unless it is bad, the answer is likely to be no. But while a shop's
scent may not be outstanding compared with sights and sounds, it is certainly there. And it is providing to
be an increasingly powerful tool in encouraging people to purchase.
A brand store has become famous for its distinctive scent which floats through the fairly dark hall and
out to the entrance, via scent machines. A smell may be attractive but it may not just be used for freshening
air. One sports goods company once reported that when it first introduced scent into its stores, customers'
intention to purchase increased by 80 percent.

When it comes to the best shopping streets in Paris, scent is just as important to a brand's success as
the quality of its window displays and goods on sale. That is mainly because shopping is a very different
experience to what it used to be.
Some years ago, the focus for brand name shopping was on a few people with sales assistants'
disproving attitude and don't-touch-what-you-can't-afford displays. Now the rise of electronic commerce
(e-commerce) has opened up famous brands to a wider audience. But while e-shops can use sights and
sounds, only bricks-and-mortar stores (实体店) can offer a full experience from the minute customers step
through the door to the moment they leave. Another brand store seeks to be much more than a shop, but
rather a destination. And scent is just one way to achieve this.
Now, a famous store uses complex man-made smell to make sure that the soft scent of baby powder
floats through the kid department, and coconut (椰子) scent in the swimsuit section. A department store
has even opened a new lab, inviting customers on a journey into the store's windows to smell books, pots
and drawers, in search of their perfect scent.

It's rare that you see the words "shyness" and "leader" in the same sentence. After all, the common
viewpoint is that those outgoing and sociable guys make great public speakers and excellent networkers
and that those shy people are not. A survey conducted by USA Today referred to 65 percent of executives
who believed shyness to be a barrier to leadership. Interestingly, the same article stresses that roughly 40
percent of leaders actually are quite shy — they're just better at adapting themselves to situational demands.
Bill Gates, Warren Buffet and Charles Schwab are just a few "innies".
Unlike their outgoing counterparts who are more sensitive to rewards and risk-taking, shy people take
a cautious approach to chance. Rather than the flashy chit-chat that defines social gathering, shy people
listen attentively to what others say and absorb it before they speak. They're not thinking about what to say
while the other person is still talking, but rather listening so they can learn what to say. Along the same lines,
shy people share a common love of learning. They are intrinsically (内在地) motivated and therefore seek
content regardless of achieving an outside standard.
Being shy can also bring other benefits.
Remember being in school and hearing the same kids
contribute, until shy little Johnny, who almost never said a word, cut in? Then what happened? Everyone
turned around to look with great respect at little Johnny actually talking. This is how shy people made
good use of their power of presence: they "own" the moment by speaking calmly and purposefully, which
translate to a positive image.
Shyness is often related to modesty. Not to say that limelight-seekers aren't modest, but shy people
tend to have an accurate sense of their abilities and achievements. As a result, they are able to acknowledge
mistakes, imperfections, knowledge gaps and limitations.
Since shy people have a lower sensitivity to outside rewards than outgoing ones, they're more comforta-
ble working with little information and sticking to their inner desires. Shy people are also more likely to insist
on finding solutions that aren't primarily apparent. Don't believe me? Maybe you'll believe Albert Einstein,
who once said, "It's not that I'm so smart, it's that I stay with problems longer." Obviously, finding certainty
where uncertainty is typically popular is a huge plus for any successful person.

Football is a popular sport. More than a million kids play on high school teams, but football can be a
hazard. The National Football League (NFL) has acknowledged that almost 30 percent of its players will
eventually suffer from brain-related diseases. That's a lot.
A recent study involving 42 former NFL players showed that those who started playing football before
age 12 did worse on thinking tests than players who started after age 12. By the way, all the tested players
scored below average for their age and education. Concerns about the effects of constant (持续不断的,连
续发生的) hits to the head have caused some medical experts on brain injuries, such as Robert Cantu of
Boston University, to recommend that kids shouldn't play football before age 14.
I don't think football is all bad. It helps kids learn teamwork, discipline (纪律,戒律) and how to get into
better physical condition. But now that we know that the sport might be dangerous, it's time to make some
changes in the youth and high school football.
First, seasons should be shorter. The high school regular season should not be more than nine games.
Second, kids should not play tackle (擒抱) football too soon. As Cantu points out, "By age fourteen, our
necks are strong and our overall body strength is sufficient (足够的,充足的) to keep the head steady when
we slam at the line of scrimmage (争球)." Personally speaking, I don't think kids should sit on the couch until
they are 14. But they can play flag football and other gentler sports. If you think age 14 is too late to become
a good football player, remember that four-time Super Bowl winner Tom Brady started playing football at
that age.

实战演练
People often say that money talks. They mean that a person with a lot of money can say how he or she
wants things done. But it is not easy to earn enough money to gain this kind of power.
Ask anyone in business. They will tell you that it is a jungle out there. The expression probably began
because a jungle is filled with wild animals and unknown dangers that threaten people.
People in business have to be careful if they are to survive the jungle out there. They must not be led
into making bogus investments. Bogus means something that is not real.
Nobody is sure how the word got started. But it began to appear in American newspapers in the 1800s.
A newspaper in Boston, Massachusetts, said the word came from a criminal whose name was Borghese.
Borghese wrote checks to people although he did not have enough money in the bank. After he wrote the
checks, he would disappear. So, people who were paid with his checks received nothing. The newspaper
said Americans shortened and changed the criminal's name Borghese to Bogus.
People trying to earn money must be also aware of the risk of being ripped off. A writer for a magazine
said he first saw the expression used in 1971. It was on a sign that a student carried during a protest
demonstration at a university. The message on the sign was that the student felt cheated.
To be successful, a person in business works hard and tries to get down to brass tacks. This expression
means getting to the bottom or the most important part of something. For example, a salesman may talk
about his product without saying the price. You get down to brass tacks when you say, "It sounds good,
but how much does it cost?"

Word expert Charles Funk thinks the expression comes from sailors on ships. They clean the bottom of
a boat. When they have removed all the dirt, they are down to the copper pieces that hold the ship together.
So, if we get down to brass tacks, we can prevent rip-offs and bogus ways of earning money in that jungle
out there. And, some good luck will help, too.
1
Why do people say money talks?
A. Because money can tell us something.
B. Because the rich tend to decide a thing.
C. Because it is hard to earn much money.
D. Because everyone loves to have money.
2
My uncle is in a jungle out there, which means
.
A. he is a success in his own business
B. he will face many difficulties
C. he is interested in going through a jungle
D. he will fight against wild animals
3
Borghese is considered to be a criminal because
.
A. he used the word "bogus" for the first time
B. he disappeared after he paid some checks
C. he didn't have enough money in the bank
D. he was accused of writing false checks
4
It can be inferred from the passage that
.
A. Charles Funk has created many interesting words
B. brass is a necessary piece of equipment of a ship
C. many English words have their interesting stories
D. many businessmen have been cheated in life

What's on Your Pet's Mind?
In 1977, Irene Pepperberg of Harvard University began studying what was on another creature's mind
by talking to it. Her first experiment began with Alex. Alex was a one-year-old African grey parrot and
Irene taught him to produce the sounds of the English language. "I thought if he learned to communicate, I
could ask him questions about how he sees the world."
At the time, most scientists didn't believe animals had any thoughts. They thought animals were more
like robots but didn't have the ability to think or feel. Of course, if you own a pet you probably disagree.
But it is the job of a scientist to prove this and nowadays more scientists accept that animals can think for
themselves.
"That's why I started my studies with Alex," Irene said, "Some people actually called me crazy for trying
this."
Nowadays, we have more and more evidence that animals have all sorts of mental abilities. Sheep
can recognize faces. Chimpanzees (黑猩猩) use a variety of tools and even use weapons to hunt. And Alex
the parrot became a very good talker.
Thirty years after the Alex studies began, Irene was still giving him English lessons up until his recent
death. For example, if Alex was hungry he could say "want grape". Alex could count to six and was learning
the sounds for seven and eight. "He has to hear the words over and over before he can correctly say them,"
Irene said, after pronouncing "seven" for Alex a few times in a row. Alex could also tell the difference
between colors, shapes, sizes, and materials (e. g. wood and metal). Before he finally died, Alex managed
to say "seven".
Another famous pet that proved some animals have greater mental skills was a dog called Rico. He
appeared on a German TV game show in 2011. Rico knew the names of 200 different toys and easily
learned the names of new ones. When scientists studied his skill they found he could learn and remember
words as quickly as a two-year-old child. When Rico became famous, many other dog owners wanted to
show how clever their pets were. Another dog called Betsy could understand 300 words.
One theory for dogs' ability to learn a language is that they have been close companions to humans for
many centuries and so their ability to understand us is constantly evolving (进化). While animals cannot do
what humans do yet, some scientists believe that examples like Alex and Rico prove that evolution develops
intelligence, as well as physical appearance.

Since January 2, a stray female dog has been consistently visiting the Kanjurmarg Railway Station
in Mumbai, India. When the Kalyan-bound train comes every night around 11 p.m., she chases after the
women's coach, peeking into doorways and scanning windows in search of something — or someone.
"I think someone has left her or she was abandoned," says Sameer Thorat, a local who filmed the clip.
As an IT specialist, Thorat commutes (经常乘车) to work every day between 3 p.m. and midnight, and he
started seeing the reoccurring dog about two weeks ago.
Thorat wanted to help the dog and figure out her reason for running after the train, so he posted footage
of the dog on social media. Although he's taken the post down, the clip attracted concerned commuters
who soon discovered the dog has four 10-to-12-day-old puppies.
"We are not moving her from that place because the puppies are very small," Thorat says. "Their eyes
are not open yet."
Thorat suspects an owner abandoned the dog after she got pregnant, and he has coordinated (协调)
with locals and organizations to care for and feed her. He says he has tried to find her owner, but in vain.
"Dogs have no concept of death, but they do have a concept of loyalty," says Stanley Coren, a University
of British Columbia psychology professor and author on all things dog psych. "The mind of a dog is sort of
the mind of a 2- or 3-year-old toddler."
There's the famous story of Hachikō, an Akita dog born in 1925 who used to greet his owner every
day at Tokyo's Shibuya Train Station. After the man died at his university job, the dog continued the ritual
for nearly a decade. Today, there's a popular statue dedicated to the dog next to the station.
There's also the story of Shep, the sheep dog. When his owner died in the summer of 1936, he kept
waiting at a station for him for the next five and a half years.

Many people want to grow their own garden, but they simply do not have the room. Do not worry.
There is a solution. Consider container gardening.
The great thing about container gardening is that you can use a variety of different containers. You
simply have to use your imagination. You could create a beautiful garden with things such as cement
blocks, hanging baskets, clay pots, or window boxes. There are so many options when it comes to container
gardening; it is only limited by your imagination.
Of course, you will want to take the following into consideration when you are ready to begin container
gardening, in order to be successful.
First, you should avoid any containers that have been used to store chemicals, as well as treated wood.
This could lead to the sudden death of your flowers and lead to the failure of your container gardening.
Second, with any container that you choose, you need to ensure that it allows the water in it to drain

when necessary. So it may be essential for you to create holes in the container to help this along. You
should also make sure the containers are placed on a raised surface, not upon the floor, to ensure the best
possible drainage.
Third, ensure that the containers you choose are appropriate in size for the plants you choose. You
need to prevent the roots from overgrowing the container.
If you like fresh veggies, you could consider container gardening with vegetables. This requires a
process that differs from that of flower gardening. Talk to an employee at a supply store in your area. They
can help you choose the right containers for the vegetables you are wishing to grow.

Tayka Hotel de Sal
  Where: Tahua, Bolivia
How much: About $95 a night
Why it's cool: You've stayed at hotels made of brick or wood, but salt? That's something few can claim.
Tayka Hotel de Sal is made totally of salt — including the beds (though you'll sleep on regular mattresses
and blankets). The hotel sits on the Salar de Uyuni, a prehistoric dried-up lake which is the world's biggest
salt flat. Builders use the salt from the 4,633-square-mile flat to make the bricks, and glue them together
with a paste (糊) of wet salt that hardens when it dries. When rain starts to dissolve (溶解) the hotel, the
owners just mix up more salt paste to strengthen the bricks.
Green Magic Nature Resort
  Where: Vythiri, India
How much: About $240 a night
Why it's cool: Taking a pulley-operated lift 86 feet to your treetop room is just the start of your adventure.
As you look out of your open window, there is no glass! You watch monkeys and birds in the rain forest
canopy (罩篷). Later you might test your fear of heights by crossing the handmade rope bridge to the main
part of the hotel, or just sit on your bamboo bed and read. You don't even have to come down for breakfast
— the hotel will send it up on the pulley-drawn "elevator".
Dog Bark Park Inn B&B
  Where: Cottonwood, Idaho
  How much: $92 a night
Why it's cool: This doghouse isn't just for the family pet. Sweet Willy is a 30-foot-tall dog with guest
rooms in his belly. Climb the wooden stairs beside his hind leg to enter the door in his side. You can relax in
the main bedroom, go up a few steps of the loft (阁楼) in Willy's head, or hang out inside his nose. Although
you have a full private bathroom in your quarters, there is also a toilet in the 12-foot-tall fire hydrant (消防
栓) outside.
Gamirasu Cave Hotel
  Where: Ayvali, Turkey
How much: Between $130 and $450 a night
Why it's cool: Experience what it was like 5,000 years ago, when people lived in these mountain caves
formed by volcanic ash. But your stay will be much more modern. Bathrooms and electricity provide what
you expect from a modern hotel, and the white volcanic ash, called tufa, keeps the rooms cool in summer.

Bad News for the Highly Intelligent
There are advantages to being smart. People who do well on IQ tests tend to be more successful in the
classroom and the workplace. They also tend to live longer, healthier lives, and are less likely to experience
negative life events.
1 In a study, Ruth Karpinski and her colleagues carried out a study on the members of
Mensa, a high IQ society. The study covered mood (情绪) disorders and anxiety disorders. Respondents
were asked to report whether they had ever suffered from each disorder. The researchers compared the
percentage of those who reported disorder to the national average and found that Mensa's highly intelligent
members were more likely to suffer from a range of serious disorders.
To explain their findings, Karpinski and his team bring up the hyper brain and hyper body theory.
This theory holds that, for all of its advantages, being highly intelligent is associated with psychological and
physiological "overexcitabilities", or OE. 2 This can include anything from an astonishing sound
to conflict with another person. According to the theory, OEs are more common in highly intelligent people.
A highly intelligent person may overanalyze a disapproving comment made by a boss, imagining negative
outcomes that simply wouldn't occur to someone less intelligent. 3

The results of this study must be interpreted cautiously. Showing that a disorder is more common
in a sample of people with high IQs than in the general population doesn't prove that high intelligence is
the cause of the disorder. 4 All the same, the findings set the stage for research that promises
to cast new light on the link between intelligence and health. One possibility is that associations between
intelligence and health outcomes reflect pleiotropy (基因多效性), which occurs when a gene (基因) influences
seemingly unrelated characteristics.
5 In a 2015 study, Rosalind Arden and her colleagues
concluded that the association between IQ and living longer is mostly explained by genetic factors. From a
practical standpoint, this research may lead to insights about how to improve people's psychological and
physical well-being.
  A. Now there's some bad news for those smart people.
  B. There is already some evidence to suggest that this is the case.
  C. It is an unusually strong reaction to an environmental threat or abuse.
  D. Scientists did many researches to understand the reasons behind the advantages.
  E. That may cause the body's stress response, which may make the person even more anxious.
  F. It's also possible that people who join Mensa differ from other people in ways other than just IQ.
  G. They found that the differences between the respondents were seen for mood and anxiety disorders.

Moving into a new home in a new neighborhood is an exciting experience. Of course, you want to
make sure that you become an acceptable and valuable part of your new neighborhood. The easiest way
to accomplish this is to make sure you conduct yourself as a good neighbor should. 1
Perhaps one of the most important things you can do as a good neighbor is to keep your property
(房产) neat, clean, and in good repair. 2 By choosing to keep the outside of the home in great
shape, you will help to improve the look and feel of the area.
Second, take the overall appearance of the neighborhood seriously. When going for a walk, take along
a small garbage bag. 3 This small act will let your neighbors know that you care about the area.
4 If a neighbor is going to be out of town, offer to collect mail and newspapers. If a neighbor
suffers an illness, offer to do the grocery shopping. Let them know you are there to help in any way that is
acceptable, while still respecting the privacy of your neighbor.
5 By following the basic rules of respecting others, taking care of what belongs to you, and
taking pride in the appearance of the neighborhood in general, you will quickly become a good neighbor
that everyone appreciates.
  A. In general, keep an eye on their property while they are gone.

Every animal sleeps, but the reason for this has remained foggy. When lab rats are not allowed to
sleep, they die within a month. 1
One idea is that sleep helps us strengthen new memories. 2 We know that, while awake, fresh
memories are recorded by reinforcing (加强) connections between brain cells, but the memory processes
that take place while we sleep have been unclear.
Support is growing for a theory that sleep evolved so that connections between neurons (神经元) in
the brain can be weakened overnight, making room for fresh memories to form the next day. 3
Now we have the most direct evidence yet that he is right. 4 The synapses in the mice taken
at the end of a period of sleep were 18 percent smaller than those taken before sleep, showing that the
connections between neurons weaken while sleeping.
If Tononi's theory is right, it would explain why, when we miss a night's, we find it harder the next day
to concentrate and learn new information — our brains may have smaller room for new experiences.
Their research also suggests how we may build lasting memories over time even though the synapses
become thinner. The team discovered that some synapses seem to be protected and stayed the same
size. 5 "You keep what matters," Tononi says.
  A. We should also try to sleep well the night before.
  B. It's as if the brain is preserving its most important memories.
  C. Similarly, when people go for a few days without sleeping, they get sick.
  D. The processes take place to stop our brains becoming loaded with memories.
  E. That's why students do better in tests if they get a chance to sleep after learning.
  F. "Sleep is the price we pay for learning," says Giulio Tononi, who developed the idea.

Each of us fails from time to time. If we are wise, we accept these failures as a 1 part of the

When I see a child 3 from this kind of pressure, I think of Donnie.

What I Learned From The Homeless Man Under The Bridge
I was out for my usual morning run and found myself hard to bear the summer heat, wishing I had
taken a bottle of water. I stopped under a bridge for a moment of 1 . I saw two young, dirty men
standing next to their sleeping bags. One smiled and gently raised his hand as if signaling "hello" but didn't
2 a word. He wasn't asking for anything. I smiled and made the same 3 back to him.
As I started back on my 4 , I thought about how much we all 5 for connection. In
that moment, this homeless man seemed to want to connect more than he wanted 6 or money.
We have all had experiences of feeling separate and 7 . I have felt lonely being in a relationship
that was 8 of emotional connection. Feeling separation doesn't have anything to do with being
alone or being 9 people — it is about the human desire to feel connected by being seen and
  10 by another person.
If your tendency (倾向) is to spend time alone, practice saying 11 to invitations. Practice
moving towards rather than away from people.
We all benefit from connection. That homeless man 12 my day. After encountering him, I felt
more 13 appreciating all that I have. He triggered (引发) my compassion — I found myself feeling
sympathy for him. I had the 14 to move towards separation or connection. Were there many
ways in which he and I are very different? Absolutely! Are there many ways in which we are 15 ?
Absolutely! I can reflect on times in my life when, like him, I was in a situation I had never expected, times
that I had no money, times that I felt at a 16 point. And as he may have been feeling this morning,
times when I needed someone to stop and acknowledge me.
We 17 have a choice as to whether we move towards separation or connection. Separation

is looking at the 18 person and focusing on how messy or untidy he looks, and 19 why
he has a 7-11 super cup if he is out of money. Connection is acknowledging that he affected my day by
20 out to me. Pay attention today and notice whether you tend to move towards separation or
towards connection. Pay attention today and notice whether that is working well for you.

When I was a teenager I volunteered to pass out water at a local race. I was so excited to 1
all the different runners who passed by and quickly took a cup of water. Some walked past, some jogged
past and a few 2 past.
Watching so many 3 of people doing it, I thought maybe I could do it too! The next year I
decided to 4 the race. With 5 running practice, I just wanted to finish.
On the day of the race, it was terribly hot. Only after 2 miles, I felt sweat 6 off me and my
legs swelling. I began to 7 , "Why am I doing this? What was I thinking? I must be 8 ."
For the following miles, I jogged, I walked, I jogged and walked. At times, I wonder if I could 9 .
    10 the end, a 70-year-old man rushed past me, very 11 , and I felt a little 12
that I was more than 50 years younger than him and I couldn't 13 keep up with him. But then I
realized something: he was running his race and I was running mine. How often in life do we 14
ourselves to others and feel disappointed in ourselves when we really 15 ?
We are all unique human beings with unique 16 . It's really no good focusing on others' race.
I decided that I would not 17 running, and that one day I would be one of those 18
people who were still running races.
As I crossed the finishing line, I was proud of myself. I didn't regret having such an experience. If you
don't 19 others but get the lesson and grow, you are truly a 20 .

实战演练
You never know what nature has prepared for you as a gift. Years ago, when walking alone on a beach
in remote southwest Florida, I was so 1 to hear splashes (水溅声) coming from the water. As I
walked in the 2 of the sounds, I saw a manatee (海牛) show its head out of the water, 3
a great snuffling (带鼻音的) breath. It seemed that it was in 4 and trying to get out of it.
I'd never seen a 5 like this before. I wanted to ask for help, but there was no one 6 .
So I went into the shallow water and went toward the animal. I came 7 enough to make out the
manatee. Then, a second manatee, much smaller, appeared beside it. 8 , the other manatees
were also moving toward me. Soon I was 9 by several manatees. I could clearly see the larger
manatee 10 the little one up with her flipper (鳍状肢) and pushed it to the surface beside me.
As the two slipped underwater, two other manatees moved up from behind, one on either side,
11 gently against my body as they swam past. They circled and 12 the action, this
time 13 by the mother and her baby. I held my hand out touching their back as they passed me.
Since they obviously enjoyed touching me, I began 14 each of them as they swam by.
I stood there enjoying the scene, 15 to move, until finally the rising tide 16 me
back to the shore. Later I knew exactly what took place that morning. The manatees involved me in their
celebration of a birth and I was welcome to meet the 17 member of their family.
During that unexpected scene, I felt more involved in the rhythms of 18 on our earth than
ever. Each year, I head for that 19 for a quiet little birthday picnic on the shore. After all, you
never know who might 20 up for your party.

Clara Daly was seated on an Alaska Airlines flight from Boston to Los Angeles when a flight attendant
asked an urgent question over the loudspeaker: "Does anyone on board know American Sign Language?"
She knew she needed to help.
Clara, 15 at the time, pressed the call button. The flight attendant came by and explained the situation.
"We have a passenger on the plane who's blind and deaf," she said. The passenger seemed to want
something, but he was traveling alone and the flight attendants couldn't understand what he needed,
according to PEOPLE magazine.
Clara had been studying ASL for the past year to help with her dyslexia and knew she'd be able to
finger spell into the man's palm. So she unbuckled her seat belt, walked toward the front of the plane, and
knelt by the aisle seat of Tim Cook, then 64. Gently taking his hand, she signed, "How are you? Are you
OK?" Cook asked for some water. When it arrived, Clara returned to her seat. She came by again a bit later
because he wanted to know the time. On her third visit, she stopped and stayed for a while.
"He didn't need anything. He was lonely and wanted to talk," Clara said. So for the next hour, that's what
they did. She talked about her family and her plans for the future (she wants to be a politician). Cook told
Clara how he had gradually become blind over time and shared stories of his days as a traveling salesman.
Even though he couldn't see her, she "looked attentively at his face with such kindness," a passenger
reported.

A biologist once criticized for stealing eggs from the nests of the rarest bird in the world has been
awarded the "Nobel Prize" of conservation after his methods saved nine species from extinction.
Professor Carl Jones won the 2016 Indianapolis Prize — the highest accolade in the field of animal
conservation — for his 40 years of work in Mauritius, where he saved an endangered kestrel from becoming
the next Great Auk.

When the 61-year-old first travelled to the east African island in the 1970s, he was told to close down
a project to save the Mauritius kestrel. At the time there were just four left in the wild, making it the rarest
bird on Earth. However, he stayed, using the techniques of captive breeding (人工繁殖), which involved
snatching eggs from the birds' nests and hatching (孵化) them under incubators, prompting the mothers to
lay another set of eggs in the wild.
A decade later, the number of Mauritius kestrels had soared to over 300 and today there are around
400 in the wild. The biologist has also been necessary in efforts to bring other rare species back from the
edge of extinction, including the pink pigeon, echo parakeet and Rodrigues warbler.
Prof Jones was awarded the $250,000 (£172,000)prize at a ceremony in London.
"As a young man in my 20s, I certainly didn't enjoy the stress and the tension of the criticism I received,"
reflecting on the start of his career, he said the Maurutius kestrel project had been seen as a "dead loss" at
the time. In the 1970s, there was fierce opposition to the captive breeding techniques, with critics arguing
that they were too risky and took the emphasis off breeding in the wild.
Prof Jones has devoted his whole life to his work, only becoming a father for the first time eight years
ago, at 53. He said receiving the prize was particularly important to him, because it proved that his work to
save birds was right.

We've all been there: those times you need to argue your point of view to someone who you know
disagrees with you. You immediately go to your keyboard and start to type out that 280-character tweet,
the Facebook reply, or a paragraphs-long email. Surely the reason, logic, and strong power of your written
words will convince whoever it is who disagrees with you to see your point of view. But new research
suggests a different idea.
That research was conducted by Juliana Schroeder, assistant professor of University of California,
Berkeley, and her colleagues. In Schroeder's study of almost 300 people, participants were asked to watch,
listen, and read arguments about subjects they agreed or disagreed with. They were asked to judge the
character of the communicator and the quality of the argument. Schroeder's team found that the participants
who watched or listened to the communicator were less dismissive (抵触的) of their claims than when they
read that communicator's same argument.
The idea for her study came from a newspaper article about a politician. One of us read a speech that
was printed in a newspaper from a politician with whom he strongly disagreed. The next week, he heard the
exact same speech playing on a radio station. He was shocked by how different his reaction was toward
the politician when he read the speech compared to when he heard it. When he read the statement, the
politician seemed idiotic, but when he heard it spoken, the politician actually sounded reasonable.
So in the workplace, speaking to someone in person often involves nothing more than walking a few
doors down to their office. And that's exactly what you should do if you need to convince that boss or
colleague of why your blueprint for the company or project is the right one.
Only as a last way should you try to communicate with someone who you disagree with over social
media. Twitter's limited text allowance and social media users' short attention make arguing your point an
uphill battle.
12
What's the result of the research?
A. Written words are more logical and reasonable.
B. People prefer to communicate with key board.
C. When reading an argument, the participants were less dismissive than hearing it.
D. Oral, not written, communication works better.
13
Why is the politician mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. To introduce the topic for discussion.
B. To summarize the previous paragraphs.
C. To explain why Schroeder conducted the research.
D. To introduce the politician's speech.

What does the underlined word "idiotic'' in paragraph 3 mean?

B. Practical.
C. Silly.
D. Special.

What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A. To persuade your boss, you need to walk to his office and leave a message.
B. It's difficult to fully explain your points due to social media's limitation.
C. Arguing over social media is more convenient than speaking in person.
D. Communicating with others over social media is encouraged.

Films and computer games
In just a few decades the gaming industry has become much bigger than the film business. What is
called "interactive entertainment" makes more money than Hollywood cinema. Is there any way of making
films more appealing to people who like to play computer games?
Making a film out of a best-selling computer game can guarantee a large audience. 1
Nowadays films are made with similar ones. They have attractive action scenes relying on fantasy effects as
well. Gaming markets consist of science-fiction games, and film-makers have also set films in science-fiction
worlds. 2 Any attempt to borrow more than the setting from a game is certain to fail.
Why do gamers feel disappointed by films based on their favorite games? One of the reasons is
technical. Now everything can be computer-produced. 3 However, filming a scene from 20
different cameras would cost a fortune, so it simply isn't done in the film version — leaving the gamers
feeling that the film didn't look as real as the computer game.
4 In a film the director doesn't show you some things to keep you have the feeling of excitement
or anxiety. For example, you wouldn't be interested in watching the film if you knew the identity of the
murderer. But this is not true for computer games. When you play a game, you have to do certain tasks to
continue to the new level. 5 You are always in control as a player, while in the cinema you never
control the action. You just sit and watch.
There can be some interaction between films and computer games on different levels. For all the
similarities between technologies and special effects, we shouldn't forget that a story and a game are
fundamentally different.
  A. Cameras matter in another sense, too.
  B. The success of a game usually lies in the use of special effects.
  C. You can't influence what happens at all in the computer games.
  D. Computer games may show the action from a number of views easily.
  E. The game has a good chance of being as successful as the film on which it is based.
  F. You must be able to have access to all the information in order to decide what to do next.
  G. However, the difficulty for film producers appears to be knowing where and when to stop.

How excited it is! Being the only child in the family, most teenagers like I grow up lonely, that does harm to
