One day, while I was walking to work, I decided to bring some flowers that I had picked from my
garden that morning. On the way, I 1 a stranger and presented the bunch to him with a smile
card. 2 by the sense of joy I felt from giving flowers to another person, and the fact that they may
be 3 his day, I wanted to do it again.
When I got to my office, I had the 4 of anonymously (匿名) leaving flowers around the
workplace. The impersonal (无人情味的) 5 of the building where I work makes me 6 .
It just feels a little boring sometimes, 7 it's a nice building with great light. I 8 lots of
people might feel the same way, so why not put a little 9 there, and throw in an inspirational quote
while I'm at it? 10 , who doesn't like flowers?
So, for the past month, I've been putting flowers in a little cup on the sink in the 11 . Each
week, I 12 the flowers and the quote. It always feels 13 for me to read quotes like
Henry David Thoreau's "If one advances 14 in the direction of his dreams, he will meet with a
15 unexpected in common hours." And Gandhi's "The fragrance (香味) always 16 on
the hand that gives the rose." If anything, I figured, it at least makes me 17 each time I visit the
bathroom.
Then today, when I walked in, I 18 new flowers in the cup, and a quote that someone else
had written! It said, "Be the change you wish to see in the world, Gandhi."
The little act 19 that at the end of the day, we're all just people with hearts, 20 the
various roles and different hats we may wear in the workplace.
I did a little dance and I am smiling wide for the rest of the day!

When I see a child 3 from this kind of pressure, I think of Donnie.

She kissed him and stood up. "Here," she said, "I'll leave one of these pencils on 17 desk

What I Learned From The Homeless Man Under The Bridge
I was out for my usual morning run and found myself hard to bear the summer heat, wishing I had
taken a bottle of water. I stopped under a bridge for a moment of 1 . I saw two young, dirty men
standing next to their sleeping bags. One smiled and gently raised his hand as if signaling "hello" but didn't
2 a word. He wasn't asking for anything. I smiled and made the same 3 back to him.
As I started back on my 4 , I thought about how much we all 5 for connection. In
that moment, this homeless man seemed to want to connect more than he wanted 6 or money.
We have all had experiences of feeling separate and 7 . I have felt lonely being in a relationship
that was 8 of emotional connection. Feeling separation doesn't have anything to do with being
alone or being 9 people — it is about the human desire to feel connected by being seen and
10 by another person.
If your tendency (倾向) is to spend time alone, practice saying 11 to invitations. Practice
moving towards rather than away from people.
We all benefit from connection. That homeless man 12 my day. After encountering him, I felt
more 13 appreciating all that I have. He triggered (引发) my compassion — I found myself feeling
sympathy for him. I had the 14 to move towards separation or connection. Were there many
ways in which he and I are very different? Absolutely! Are there many ways in which we are 15 ?
Absolutely! I can reflect on times in my life when, like him, I was in a situation I had never expected, times
that I had no money, times that I felt at a 16 point. And as he may have been feeling this morning,
times when I needed someone to stop and acknowledge me.
We 17 have a choice as to whether we move towards separation or connection. Separation

You never know what nature has prepared for you as a gift. Years ago, when walking alone on a beach
in remote southwest Florida, I was so 1 to hear splashes (水溅声) coming from the water. As I
walked in the 2 of the sounds, I saw a manatee (海牛) show its head out of the water, 3
a great snuffling (带鼻音的) breath. It seemed that it was in 4 and trying to get out of it.

I'd never seen a 5 like this before. I wanted to ask for help, but there was no one 6 .
So I went into the shallow water and went toward the animal. I came 7 enough to make out the
manatee. Then, a second manatee, much smaller, appeared beside it. 8 , the other manatees
were also moving toward me. Soon I was 9 by several manatees. I could clearly see the larger
manatee 10 the little one up with her flipper (鳍状肢) and pushed it to the surface beside me.
As the two slipped underwater, two other manatees moved up from behind, one on either side,
11 gently against my body as they swam past. They circled and 12 the action, this
time 13 by the mother and her baby. I held my hand out touching their back as they passed me.
Since they obviously enjoyed touching me, I began 14 each of them as they swam by.
I stood there enjoying the scene, 15 to move, until finally the rising tide 16 me

celebration of a birth and I was welcome to meet the 17 member of their family.
During that unexpected scene, I felt more involved in the rhythms of 18 on our earth than
ever. Each year, I head for that 19 for a quiet little birthday picnic on the shore. After all, you

Throughout my years in school, I am able to recall countless experiences in my mind. The teachers

The lesson was concluded by putting together all of the information. The random 17 that I

When I was a teenager I volunteered to pass out water at a local race. I was so excited to 1
all the different runners who passed by and quickly took a cup of water. Some walked past, some jogged
past and a few 2 past.
Watching so many 3 of people doing it, I thought maybe I could do it too! The next year I
decided to 4 the race. With 5 running practice, I just wanted to finish.
On the day of the race, it was terribly hot. Only after 2 miles, I felt sweat 6 off me and my
legs swelling. I began to 7 , "Why am I doing this? What was I thinking? I must be 8 ."
For the following miles, I jogged, I walked, I jogged and walked. At times, I wonder if I could 9 .
10 the end, a 70-year-old man rushed past me, very 11 , and I felt a little
12 that I was more than 50 years younger than him and I couldn't 13 keep up with him.
But then I realized something: he was running his race and I was running mine. How often in life do we

We are all unique human beings with unique 16 . It's really no good focusing on others' race.
I decided that I would not 17 running, and that one day I would be one of those 18

As I crossed the finishing line, I was proud of myself. I didn't regret having such an experience. If you

On Oct. 16, 2018, one of the two co-founders of Microsoft, Paul G. Allen, 1 (die) at age 65
from cancer.
When 2 comes to Microsoft, the first person we think of 3 (be) Bill Gates, the other
co-founder of the firm. However, Allen was just as important to the 4 (create) of the company.
Allen was, many people said, a much quieter person. He was content with the science side of things, while
Gates had the 5 (good) head for business.
When the pair started Microsoft in the mid-1970s, they focused on the microcomputer industry.
Microcomputers were small computers 6 (design) to be used in the home.
7 they lacked, though, was an operating system, which was where Microsoft came in. The
company's big break came in 1980, 8 Microsoft created the MS-DOS operating system. Later
came Windows.
After Allen passed away, Bill Gates made a statement 9 (praise) Allen, "Even in high school,
before most people knew what a personal computer was, Paul predicted that chips would get super-powerful
and would 10 (eventual) give rise to a whole new industry."

The students spent five days at their school learning 4 experienced workers from the Masonry

On December 30, after two weeks' training, we finally began our work for volunteer guides in a museum.
During the first two weeks, I learnt a lot about the story behind the artworks. In order to do good in the work,
my teammates and I made fully preparations. We first worked out a careful plan. Then we practiced use
proper body language to explain the artworks better. The month-long volunteer work has now come to
end, from what I understand that it isn't easy to be a good guide. Besides, I also realize that how important
teamwork is. I believed that I will get lifelong benefits from the short and meaningful experience.

I can still clear remember I was once asked to make the speech before the whole class. You can
imagine how shy I was when I thought of the moment with so many eye fixed to me. I had no choice but
prepare for it. The most hardest part was my oral presentation from my memory. The real moment began
when I stood on the platform with my legs trembled and my mind blank. So my listeners were waiting
patiently. Gradually, I found me back, giving my speech at last. Then I heard all the listeners applauding
loudly. Ever since then, my fear of speaking before the audience had disappeared. Actually, now I've

Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in
no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
To Friend or Unfriend
Social networking makes it very easy to have friends — lots and lots friends. Hundreds or millions
of people have joined QQ, Wechat, and other sites so that they can communicate with friends online.
However, the meaning of the word "friend" seems changed. In the past, a friend was someone you had a
close personal relationship with. Now, anyone in the world can be your friend online! Some people have
thousands of cyber friends, but what do you do if you don't want to have so many friends?
Easy! You can dump an unwanted friend with just one click of your mouse. In recent years, it has
become so common to get rid of friends in this way that there is a new word to describe it — to "unfriend".
The New Oxford American Dictionary named it word of the Year in 2009 and defined it like this: "to remove
someone as a 'friend' from social networking site". But why would you want to do such a thing as unfriending
someone?
The most common reason for unfriending someone is to eliminate annoying people from your social
life. For example, some friends post messages much too frequently, especially those messages found to
be extremely boring. They endlessly post status updates which say something like "I'm cooking dinner"
or "I'm doing homework". Another reason for unfriending someone is disagreement about world issues. A
third reason is to get rid of people who write dirty things on social websites.
Although dumping friends is not just an Internet phenomenon, far more online friendships end suddenly
than off-line ones. Even in this computer age, it remains true that many people prefer spending time
together face-to-face. After all, that's what friends are for!

Robots will create double the number of jobs that they will destroy, according to the World Economic
Forum (WEF), but there will be significant shifts in the structure of America's workforce that may impact
everyone. The report says that 75 million jobs will be replaced by artificial intelligence (AI), robotics and
automation. But it also suggests that 133 million new jobs may be created as organizations shift the balance
between human workers and machines.
It is a widely held belief that routine, low-skilled jobs are most at risk for automation, but the report
shows that many middle-class roles are also at risk. Financial analysts, accountants and lawyers could all
see significant changes by 2022. But manual workers could be among the hardest hit.
Meanwhile, there could be a huge change in the structure of the workforce, with the executives
surveyed by WEF expecting a shift away from full-time work to flexible employment with a focus on productivity.
All industries expect big skills gaps, stating that at least 50 percent of their workforce will require
reskilling of some degree. The aviation, travel and tourism industry will have the largest demand for reskilling.

Clara Daly was seated on an Alaska Airlines flight from Boston to Los Angeles when a flight attendant
asked an urgent question over the loudspeaker: "Does anyone on board know American Sign Language?"
She knew she needed to help.
Clara, 15 at the time, pressed the call button. The flight attendant came by and explained the situation.
"We have a passenger on the plane who's blind and deaf," she said. The passenger seemed to want
something, but he was traveling alone and the flight attendants couldn't understand what he needed,
according to PEOPLE magazine.
Clara had been studying ASL for the past year to help with her dyslexia and knew she'd be able to
finger spell into the man's palm. So she unbuckled her seat belt, walked toward the front of the plane, and
knelt by the aisle seat of Tim Cook, then 64. Gently taking his hand, she signed, "How are you? Are you
OK?" Cook asked for some water. When it arrived, Clara returned to her seat. She came by again a bit later
because he wanted to know the time. On her third visit, she stopped and stayed for a while.
"He didn't need anything. He was lonely and wanted to talk," Clara said. So for the next hour, that's what
they did. She talked about her family and her plans for the future (she wants to be a politician). Cook told
Clara how he had gradually become blind over time and shared stories of his days as a traveling salesman.
Even though he couldn't see her, she "looked attentively at his face with such kindness," a passenger
reported.
"Clara was amazing." a flight attendant told Alaska Airlines in a blog interview. "You could tell Tim was
very excited to have someone he could speak to, and she was such an angel." Cook's reaction: "Best trip
I've ever had."
Looking for ways to give back yourself?
Start with this random act of kindness that can change
someone's life right now.

A biologist once criticized for stealing eggs from the nests of the rarest bird in the world has been
awarded the "Nobel Prize" of conservation after his methods saved nine species from extinction.
Professor Carl Jones won the 2016 Indianapolis Prize — the highest accolade in the field of animal
conservation — for his 40 years of work in Mauritius, where he saved an endangered kestrel from becoming
the next Great Auk.
When the 61-year-old first travelled to the east African island in the 1970s, he was told to close down
a project to save the Mauritius kestrel. At the time there were just four left in the wild, making it the rarest
bird on Earth. However, he stayed, using the techniques of captive breeding (人工繁殖), which involved
snatching eggs from the birds' nests and hatching (孵化) them under incubators, prompting the mothers to
lay another set of eggs in the wild.
A decade later, the number of Mauritius kestrels had soared to over 300 and today there are around
400 in the wild. The biologist has also been necessary in efforts to bring other rare species back from the
edge of extinction, including the pink pigeon, echo parakeet and Rodrigues warbler.
Prof Jones was awarded the $250,000 (£172,000) prize at a ceremony in London.
"As a young man in my 20s, I certainly didn't enjoy the stress and the tension of the criticism I received,"
reflecting on the start of his career, he said the Maurutius kestrel project had been seen as a "dead loss" at
the time. In the 1970s, there was fierce opposition to the captive breeding techniques, with critics arguing
www.xueersi.com
47
13
that they were too risky and took the emphasis off breeding in the wild.
Prof Jones has devoted his whole life to his work, only becoming a father for the first time eight years
ago, at 53. He said receiving the prize was particularly important to him, because it proved that his work to
save birds was right.

We've all been there: those times you need to argue your point of view to someone who you know
disagrees with you. You immediately go to your keyboard and start to type out that 280-character tweet,
the Facebook reply, or a paragraphs-long email. Surely the reason, logic, and strong power of your written
words will convince whoever it is who disagrees with you to see your point of view. But new research
suggests a different idea.
That research was conducted by Juliana Schroeder, assistant professor of University of California,
Berkeley, and her colleagues. In Schroeder's study of almost 300 people, participants were asked to watch,
listen, and read arguments about subjects they agreed or disagreed with. They were asked to judge the
character of the communicator and the quality of the argument. Schroeder's team found that the participants
who watched or listened to the communicator were less dismissive (抵触的) of their claims than when they
read that communicator's same argument.
The idea for her study came from a newspaper article about a politician. One of us read a speech that
was printed in a newspaper from a politician with whom he strongly disagreed. The next week, he heard the
exact same speech playing on a radio station. He was shocked by how different his reaction was toward
the politician when he read the speech compared to when he heard it. When he read the statement, the
politician seemed idiotic, but when he heard it spoken, the politician actually sounded reasonable.
So in the workplace, speaking to someone in person often involves nothing more than walking a few
高三英语·目标清北班(全国)·春
48
13
doors down to their office. And that's exactly what you should do if you need to convince that boss or
colleague of why your blueprint for the company or project is the right one.
Only as a last way should you try to communicate with someone who you disagree with over social
media. Twitter's limited text allowance and social media users' short attention make arguing your point an
uphill battle.
12
What's the result of the research?
A. Written words are more logical and reasonable.

Films and computer games
In just a few decades the gaming industry has become much bigger than the film business. What is
called "interactive entertainment" makes more money than Hollywood cinema. Is there any way of making
films more appealing to people who like to play computer games?
Making a film out of a best-selling computer game can guarantee a large audience. 1
Nowadays films are made with similar ones. They have attractive action scenes relying on fantasy effects as
well. Gaming markets consist of science-fiction games, and film-makers have also set films in science-fiction
worlds. 2 Any attempt to borrow more than the setting from a game is certain to fail.
Why do gamers feel disappointed by films based on their favorite games? One of the reasons is
technical. Now everything can be computer-produced. 3 However, filming a scene from 20
different cameras would cost a fortune, so it simply isn't done in the film version — leaving the gamers
feeling that the film didn't look as real as the computer game.

4 In a film the director doesn't show you some things to keep you have the feeling of excitement
or anxiety. For example, you wouldn't be interested in watching the film if you knew the identity of the
murderer. But this is not true for computer games. When you play a game, you have to do certain tasks to
continue to the new level. 5 You are always in control as a player, while in the cinema you never
control the action. You just sit and watch.
There can be some interaction between films and computer games on different levels. For all the
similarities between technologies and special effects, we shouldn't forget that a story and a game are
fundamentally different.
A. Cameras matter in another sense, too.
B. The success of a game usually lies in the use of special effects.
C. You can't influence what happens at all in the computer games.
D. Computer games may show the action from a number of views easily.
E. The game has a good chance of being as successful as the film on which it is based.
F. You must be able to have access to all the information in order to decide what to do next.
G. However, the difficulty for film producers appears to be knowing where and when to stop.

Vijay Gupta is known to classical music lovers across the United States. He serves as first violinist for
the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In that job, he often plays to large crowds, including many very rich people.
When he is not performing, he organizes concerts for homeless people. "They have reminded me why I
became a musician," he said.
Last week, Gupta was recognized for being a founder and the artistic director of Street Symphony. The
group has performed at homeless shelters, jails and halfway houses for about eight years. Gupta is among
the 25 winners of the 2018 MacArthur Fellowship, commonly known as the "genius grant." Each winner will
receive $625,000 over five years to use as they wish. The money is coming from a private group, the John
D. and Katherine T. MacArthur Foundation. It awards grants (补助金) to people whose work it considers
exceptional and that "inspires hope in us all." Gupta said he got the idea for Street Symphony while teaching
Nathaniel Ayers, a trained musician whose mental illness led to homelessness.
The 31-year-old grant winner said he does not know yet how he will spend the money. He has been
a performer since age seven and the award will give him "space to breathe, plan and look ahead."
Another winner is Rebecca Sandefur, an associate professor of sociology and law in the University of
Illinois. The Associated Press says her research actively supports new ways to involve poor communities
in the U.S. justice system.
47-year-old Sandefur created the first national mapping of civil legal aid providers. It shows which
states had the financial resources to provide such aid and which did not. She also found that the cost of
legal services is only one of the things preventing poor people from getting lawyers. Among the others are
fears about unfairness in the legal system. Sandefur noted that a lot of attention has been paid to problems
with the criminal justice system, but more attention must be paid to the civil side of the law, which also
affects millions of people.

During Amsterdam's chaotic rush hour, nine-year-old Lotta Crok cycles to a very busy junction.
"Look," she says. "There's traffic coming from everywhere. Four trams from four different directions. For a
child on a bike that's really confusing!"
Lotta is the first junior cycle mayor in the world and her working area is the Dutch capital. You would
think this challenge would be superfluous in a city known as the bicycle capital of the world. The number
of bicycles in Amsterdam is estimated at 881,000 — more than the city's 850,000 inhabitants — and 63%
of the population cycle daily.
But children who cycle in Amsterdam face challenges, Lotta says: "The three biggest problems for
us are cars, cycling tourists and scooters (小型摩托). The cars take up too much space, the tourists are
always swinging side to side and stop when you least expect it, and the scooters simply run you over."
Lotta became junior cycle mayor in June last year when she won a contest in which schoolchildren
were asked to come up with plans to make cycling safer and more fun. Her idea was to add children's bikes
to the popular bike share programme.
Since Lotta was appointed junior cycle mayor, she has been busy, giving interviews, opening cycling
contests in the city and being a jury (评审员) member during the Amsterdam Light Parade, an event in which
www.xueersi.com

Amsterdammers decorate their bikes with lights.
She is now planning a meeting with the city's mayor to discuss ideas that children have come up with:
"One of our proposals is a bicycle park where children can learn how to cycle. Right now, most of us learn
it in the street, which can be quite busy. Another idea is to create an app for tourists to teach them the rules
of cycling, because most of them really don't know."
Following the success of the Amsterdam scheme, cycle mayors around the world are now planning
to appoint junior colleagues. "They see it works really well," Boerma, the senior major, says. "I talk to the
parents, Lotta talks to the children. And if you look at the city through the eyes of a child, you will also make
it accessible for others. A city that's good for an eight-year-old is also good for an 88-year-old."
8
Why is a junior cycle mayor appointed in Amsterdam?
A. To teach children how to ride.
B. To ensure cycling is safer for children.
C. To give suggestions to the city's mayor on how to run the city.
D. To organize the cycling contests in the city.
9
Which word can best replace the underlined word "superfluous" in paragraph 2?
A. Important.
B. Unnecessary.
C. Difficult.
D. Valuable.
10
What has Lotta done since she became the bike mayor?
A. She has solved the three biggest problems for children cycling in Amsterdam.
B. She has won a contest about cycling.
C. She has given interviews and been a jury member during a parade.
D. She has given proposals to the city mayor.
11
What's Boerma's attitude to the junior cycle mayor?
A. Cautious.
B. Favorable.
C. Ambiguous.
D. Disapproving.

Don't put it off, do it now!
Why do we spend so much time not doing the work we should do, or putting off small jobs that have
piled up to create a big problem? Procrastinating, as putting things off like this is called, is in our character
we have naturally since birth; we avoid dull or difficult jobs until it's too late to do anything else.
"We often put things off although we know it will make life more stressful," says Dr. Steel, an authority
on the science of motivation. "If these tasks were fun, we'd just do them now. We put off what is difficult or
unpleasant, such as the paperwork that needs doing before leaving the office or cleaning the bits of your
home that people can't see. But the fact is, the less people procrastinate, the more money they have, the
better relationships they have, and the healthier they are." This is obvious when you look at the couples who
don't argue about whether anyone has cleaned the kitchen, and the people who simply go for a run instead
of endlessly rescheduling it in their heads.
高三英语·目标清北班(全国)·春

14
Of course, there are the rest of us, who feel the small jobs piling up around us daily. "We've evolved to
respond to the moment, and not to set our sights too far in an uncertain world," Dr. Steel adds. "We are not
set up to appreciate long-term rewards, whether it's the benefit of a four-year degree, doing exercise or
dieting. We usually feel the cost now and the reward comes much later." According to Dr. Steel, we have two
decision-making systems. They are the limbic, which is responsible for the short term, and the prefrontal
cortex, which deals with the future. We bounce between long-term goals and short-term temptations, so
we need goals that will translate our plans for the limbic system.
Let's take the example of students' writing essays. They should set themselves targets and word
counts per day. These are thus turned from seemingly endless tasks into something concrete with measured
progress. Dr. Steel recommends such techniques, or "pre-commitments", adding that leaving you a month
before the "deadline" makes it more likely a task will be completed. The benefit is that you'll avoid the
embarrassment of not following up on something people are expecting you to do — telling everyone you
are going to take up jogging makes you more likely to do so.
Overcoming procrastination finally comes down to planning, which, if you're not careful, becomes
procrastination in itself. But it is worth making sure you have everything in place. "Successful people
don't pretend they don't procrastinate," Dr. Steel says. "People who pretend they have willpower are less
successful." Instead, plan for procrastination: make your work environment a temple of productivity by
cutting out what stops you paying your attention, so you can really focus on moving forward.
12
What does the author say about procrastination in Paragraph 1?
A. It is something many people can't help.
B. It is an excuse people often use in public.
C. It is caused by the technology in people's life.
D. It is more common when people have small jobs to do.
13
In Paragraph 3, Dr. Steel believes that people who procrastinate should
.
A. attempt to overcome their natural tendencies
B. take the advice of others in the same situation
C. be aware that their problem is relatively small
D. find out more about the way they make decisions
14
Why does Dr. Steel recommend making "pre-commitments" in Paragraph 4?
A. They are an alternative to impossible goals.
B. They make challenges feel more manageable.
C. They are an effective way of impressing others
D. They allow people to achieve their aims sooner.
15
What does the author do by saying the underlined sentence?
A. Encourage the reader to develop plans effectively.
B. Advise the reader to deal with complex tasks quickly.
C. Warn the reader against spending too long getting organized.
D. Remind the reader to take the time to focus properly on a task.

The Things That Keep Us From Succeeding
We have always been told not to fear failure because it is essential to success. So we should embrace
failure or at least the possibility of failure. 1 . If you're not reaching the kind of success you imagine,
one or more of the following things might well be true of you, too.
No. 1: You don't have a goal. A lot of time we find ourselves struggling through a day-to-day routine
that isn't getting us anywhere because we don't know where we want to go. Sometimes we had goals when
we set ourselves on a particular path, but we've changed along the way and those goals are no longer that
important. 2 , figuring out what your goals are is important.
No. 2: You don't have a vision. Setting goals is important but isn't enough to drive you to the finish line;
it's important, too, to be able to imagine yourself as the achiever of your goals. If goals are the end result of
a journey, your vision is the fuel to get you there.
No. 3: You don't have a plan. If goals are your destination and a vision is your fuel, your plan is the
map to get you there. 3 . The world is full of people with goals they have never accomplished
because they didn't have a plan — don't be one of them.
No. 4: You're too certain or not certain enough. Too much certainty creates inflexibility. If you're sure
that your plan is correct, and refuse to accept the possibility of error, you may well find yourself stuck when
an unexpected change comes about. However strong your plan and however sure you are of your goals,
make room for periodic reassessment.
4 . If you refuse to take a step because you aren't positive that it will move you towards
success, you won't make any better progress than if you had no goals at all. Keep your eyes open and be
willing to change, but have faith in yourself, too.
No. 5: 5 . Often we close ourselves off from other people not because we're afraid that
they will influence us but that we will influence them. We are afraid that our brilliant ideas will be taken up
by someone else and no longer be solely ours. So we avoid sharing our passions, and spend our energy
jealously guarding our "secret" rather than simply moving forward. In the end, we turn our passions into
burdens that are difficult to carry instead of a joy.
A. Whatever the case
B. Whatever the cause
C. You worry about being copied
D. You don't learn from your mistakes
E. At the same time, too little certainty will fail you
F. However, fear isn't the only thing that keeps us from succeeding
G. Without it, you have no idea what immediate steps to take to achieve your goals

This week, we're preparing for one of the newest 1 (tradition) events in our country: Black
Friday. It's that crazy gathering of retail (零售)-related violence, a time 2 stores offer once-a-year
promotional sales to set off the customers' greediness and jump — start the Christmas shopping season
with a sudden activity in a 3 (crowd) space.
The general feeling has been set by the Hamleys Christmas Toy Parade in London, in which 800,000

For the people who dislike shopping, such as me, any day with shopping in it is a black day, and Black

The best gift I have ever received is a hand-made calendar. It was made up by my best friend Jane,
with who I have so much in common. On each page of the calendar, there is the picture of us with some
word written by Jane. She either tells me what she feels about our friendship or encourages me try my best
and live a happy life. Whenever I look at the calendar, I am touched by something warmly, and my heart is
filling with love. This gift is a memory of the wonderful time I spend with Jane in junior high school and I will
keep them forever.
