I Was Forced to Find My Gifts
I was a pretty typical 17-year-old with a strong interest in painting when something happened. One
Sunday, I went to an old swimming hole and dove in. I 1 something under the water head-on and broke
a couple of vertebrae (椎骨) of my neck.
For five months I stayed at the hospital, feeling like a 2 to my family. My self-image was instantly
3 . I was described with terms like "disabled" or "crippled". I was angry and 4 after I failed so
many times at some 5 task — dropping something on the floor and trying to get it back up again.
Near the end of my stay in the hospital, my doctor almost forcibly tied a 6 to my hand. He had
seen my paintings I'd done before and 7 me to paint. Fortunately, I found that I 8 had this artistic
ability left. It was like a big weight had been 9 . At least I could do something worthwhile again, and it
became a 10 part of my recovery.
After I left the hospital, I stayed at home, feeling desperately 11 . It seemed like I was cut off
from 12 . No one can get along 13 love and acceptance. So that fall, I started at the University of
Texas, majoring in graphic design.
One day a man happened to see one of my paintings. He had a great 14 for it and asked if I ever
did art shows. So I was given a(n) 15 . Much to my surprise, I found that people liked my paintings and
would pay for them. That was about 11 years ago.
Today, 1,500 16 have carried my work.
It was the art that provided the 17 for me to get up every morning and do something, 18
sitting in front of the television. Society has 19 expectations of the disabled person, so it's very easy to
get sucked into a dependency routine — you know, the "give me" kind of attitude. And that's what I take the
most 20 in — the fact that what I'm doing today is well received all over.

why. She sounded impatient with herself, 13 13 years should be enough time to "get past" being

一、阅读理解
A
Dear Alfred,
I want to tell you how important your help is to my life.
Growing up, I had people telling me I was too slow, though, with an IQ of 150+ at 17, I'm anything but
stupid. The fact was that I was found to have ADHD (注意力缺陷多动障碍). Anxious all the time, I was
unable to keep focused for more than an hour at a time.
However, when something did interest me, I could become absorbed. In high school, I became curious
about the computer, and built my first website. Moreover, I completed the senior course of Computer Basics,
plus five relevant pre-college courses.
While I was exploring my curiosity, my disease got worse. I wanted to go to college after high school, but
couldn't. So, I was killing my time at home until June 2012 when I discovered the online computer courses of
your training center.
Since then, I have taken courses like Data Science and Advanced Mathematics. Currently, I'm learning
your Probability course. I have hundreds of printer paper, covered in self-written notes from your video. This
has given me a purpose.
Last year, I spent all my time looking for a job where, without dealing with the public, I could work
alone, but still have a team to talk to. Luckily, I discovered the job — Data Analyst — this month and have
been going full steam ahead. I want to prove that I can teach myself a respectful profession, without going to
college, and be just as good as, if not better than, my competitors.
Thank you. You've given me hope that I can follow my heart. For the first time, I feel good about myself
because I'm doing something, not because someone told me I was doing good. I feel whole.
This is why you're saving my life.
Yours,
Tanis

The bacteria which inhabit (栖居于) human beings, particularly the guts (肠道) of those beings, have
been found in recent years to be important for fighting off diseases. That something similar happens in other
animal species is doubtless true as well. But work by Seon-Woo Lee at Dong-A University and Jihyun Kim
at Yonsei University, both in South Korea, suggests that it is not only animals that benefit from such bacterial
protection. Their study, just published in Nature Biotechnology, shows that plants do, too.
Crop plants of the nightshade family, such as potatoes and tomatoes, are not immune to a soil bacterium
called Ralstonia solanacearum. This enters their roots and spreads through their water-transport systems,
causing them to wilt (枯萎). Infection is usually deadly; the disease costs potato farmers alone 1 bn a year.
A variety of tomatoes called Hawaii 7996, however, does not suffer from such bacterial wilt. Dr. Lee and Dr.
Kim wondered if the explanation for this exceptionalism lay with other bacteria in the soil.
To test that idea, they grew crops of Hawaii 7996 and a second tomato variety called Moneymaker.
Once the plants were established, the researchers analyzed bacteria in the soil around the plants' roots and
found systematic differences that depended on which tomato variety was growing. This observation made their
explanation reasonable and likely to be true.
They then transplanted some of their Moneymaker plants into soil that had previously supported Hawaii
7996s, and some of the Hawaiian plants into soil that had been home to Moneymakers. As controls, they
similarly uprooted (拔起) individuals of both varieties and replanted them in soil once occupied by the same
variety. That done, they exposed all of their plants to R. solanacearum and monitored them over the course of
12
【春】高三英语目标清北班(全国) 练习册
14 days.
They found the disease progressed almost 30% more slowly in Moneymaker plants grown in "Hawaiian"
soil than it did in those Moneymakers that had been replanted into their own soil. In contrast, it progressed
rapidly in the normally resistant Hawaiian variety when this was transferred into Moneymaker soil.
Further study revealed that credit for this disease resistance went to a single type of soil bacterium, called
TRM1. Dr. Lee and Dr. Kim therefore cultivated (培育) this bug in their laboratory and used it to treat soil
into which Moneymaker plants were then planted. When these were infected with R. solanacearum they proved
more resistant than others that had been planted into untreated soil as controls.
These findings suggest to Dr. Lee and Dr. Kim that the roots of Hawaii 7996 are releasing compounds
(化合物) which encourage the growth of TRM1. What those compounds are has yet to be determined. The two
researchers' work, however, seems to suggest something constructive.
4 The author mentions the bacteria inhabiting human beings to introduce
.
A. the benefits of bacteria to humans
B. the effects of bacteria on plants
C. the efforts to fight off diseases
D. the reasons for plant diseases
5 What are the two researchers' findings based on?
A. Comprehensive analyses of how plants are infected.
B. Careful observation of the transplanting process.
C. Controlled experiments on the uprooted individuals of both varieties.
D. Comparison of the progress of the disease in different conditions.
6 According to the study, why are some plants immune to infection?
A. They have better water-transport systems.
B. They are protected by some other bacteria.
C. They are genetically different from others.
D. They have resistance to bacteria when transferred.
7 The two researchers' work indicates that
.
A. new ways will be found to deal with bacterial wilt
B. causes of some plant diseases have been discovered
C. a new chapter of agricultural science and technology has started
D. the composition of the compounds released has been identified

We live in a sweet world. The average American kid consumes more than 20 teaspoons of sugar per day,
and adults eat 50% more sugar today than they did in the 1970s. We all know that too much sugar isn't good
for you. But did we know it could be dangerous? A team of researchers at the University of Utah used mice to
conduct a study on the negative effects of sugar. They found it could have serious effects on people's health.
Sugar is found not only in sweets and candies, but also in many household items like pasta and crackers.
During the 58-week-long study, mice were fed a diet containing 25% more sugar. This percentage
equals a healthy human diet along with three cans of sugar daily. The team found that these mice were twice
as likely to die as mice fed a similar diet without the sugar. Though the mice did not show signs of obesity
or high blood pressure, male mice were 26% less territorial and produced 25% fewer offspring than the other
mice.
Scientists often use mice for research because they have a similar genetic (基因) structure to humans.
"Since most substances that are dangerous in mice are also dangerous in people, it's likely that those physical
problems that cause those mice to have increased deaths also work in people," says study author James Ruff
of the University of Utah. Findings from this study reveal negative effects that are not as noticeable as weight
gain or heart problems. Sugar can contribute to long-term changes in the body that can change development
and even shorten lives.
Cutting sugar out of the American diet altogether may be difficult. But making the effort to control our
nation's sugar desire will provide for a truly sweeter future.
1
The study conducted by researchers aimed at learning about
.
A. the advantages and disadvantages of sugar
B. the negative effects of sugar on people's health
C. the genetic structure of mice
D. American's diet
2 According to the study, which of the following statements is wrong?
A. Sugar can even shorten lives.
B. Sugar's negative effects are not noticeable.
C. Mice are more likely to die when fed a diet containing 25% more sugar.
D. Eating much more sugar can make mice put on weight and get high blood pressure.

Happy, angry, amazed — these are some of the emotions we like to express these days when we're
sending a message on our smart phones. That's why many of us now add little pictures to our texts to brighten
up someone's mobile screen but we're also using them as a quick way of telling someone how we're feeling.
Yes, emojis have become a vital tool for communication.
Let's clear one thing up first — there are emojis and emoticons (表情符号). The latter are little images
made using normal keys on a keyboard. For example, a colon, two dots, followed by the curved line of a close
brackets is a "smiley face".
The emoji was first invented in Japan in the late 1990s and the word "emoji" comes from the Japanese
words for "picture" and "character". The number of different images has dramatically increased since then and
now we have a picture for every mood or situation.
So now we have the option to give this new creation the visual "thumbs-up" but have you thought why
we've become so addicted to using emojis? Professor Vyv Evans who has written a book called The Emoji
Code says, "What we're finding is that digital communication is taking over from certain aspects of face-to-face
interaction. One of the reasons emojis are so interesting is that they really do enable us to express our emotional
selves much more effectively."
Another advantage of emojis is that they are an international language — they don't use words but tell a
message in pictorial form so they can be easily interpreted whatever your native language.
Emojis are a good way for showing empathy (共鸣) — they are a virtual hug or an adorable tease. But
as linguist Neil Cohn says, "To many, emojis are an exciting evolution of the way we communicate while to
others, they are linguistic (语言学的) Armageddon. " It does show there is a lot more to our communication
than words alone but does this mean the decline in traditional writing?

A. The decline in traditional writing.
B. The differences between emojis and emotions.
C. The origins of the emoji.
D. The rise of the emoji.
6 Why are emojis appealing according to Professor Vyv Evans?
A. Because they are easy to use.
B. Because they allow us to express whatever we want.
C. Because they enable us to express our feelings better.

一、七选五
Lifelong Musicians Have Better Hearing
Playing a musical instrument throughout your life protects your hearing, a Canadian study suggests.
The study, which was published in Psychology and Aging, carried out hearing tests on 74 musicians and 89
non-musicians. 1
Action on Hearing Loss said all people — including musicians — should try to prevent hearing damage.
2 By sixty, 10-30% of people have some hearing loss. By eighty, that goes up to as many as 60%.
Problems are particularly seen in the central hearing processing system, which is associated with understanding
speech, especially when there is background noise.
Then a research, by a team at the Rotman Research Institute in Toronto, looked at how adults were
affected as they aged. They chose both musicians and non-musicians from the age of 18 to 91 and divided
them into different groups based on the age. Again musicians were significantly better at picking out speech
against noise in all the age ranges.
3 Benjamin Zendel, who was part of the research team, said, "We found that being a musician
may contribute to better hearing in old age, probably due to musicians using their hearing systems at a high
level on a regular basis. This advantage widened considerably for musicians as they got older when compared
to similar-aged non-musicians."
This study suggests that musicians might be more able to deal with the consequences of hearing loss.
4 As Dr. Ralph Holme said, all people — including musicians — should try to prevent hearing
damage in the first place. It's necessary for everyone who plays a musical instrument or listens to loud music
to wear hearing protection. 5
A. Hearing normally declines as people age.
B. Previous studies explained the reasons for hearing loss.
C. That can effectively reduce the risk of damaging their hearing permanently.
D. Still, it is far better to minimize damage by using appropriate ear protection.
E. They believed musicians are also likely to experience age-related hearing problems.
F. The researchers concluded that lifelong musicianship delays age-related changes in hearing.
G. It found a 70-year-old musician's hearing was as good as that of a 50-year-old who didn't play.

二、任务型阅读
Educating girls quite possibly harvests a higher rate of return than any other investment available in the
developing world. Women's education may be an unusual economical field, but increasing women's contribution
to development is actually as much an economic issue as a social one. And economics, with its focus on
encouragement, provides an explanation for why so many girls are rid of an education.
Parents in low-income countries fail to invest in their daughters because they do not expect them to
make an economic contribution to the family: Girls grow up only to marry into someone else's family and bear
children. Girls are thus seen as less valuable than boys and are kept at home to do housework while their
brothers are sent to school — the prophecy (观念) becomes self-fulfilling, trapping women in a vicious (恶性
的) circle of neglect.
An educated mother, on the other hand, has greater earning abilities outside the home and faces an
entirely different set of choices. She is likely tovhave fewer but healthier children and can insist on the development
of all her children, ensuring that her daughters are given a fair chance. The education of her daughters then
makes it much more likely that the next generation of girls, as well as boys, will be educated and healthy. The
vicious circle is thus transformed into a virtuous circle.
Few will argue that educating women has great social benefits. But it has enormous economic advantages
as well. Most obviously, there is the direct effect of education on the wages of female workers. Wages rise
by 10 to 20 percent for each additional year of schooling. Such big returns are impressive by the standard of
other available investment, but they are just the beginning. Educating women also has a significant effect on
health practices, including family planning.

Today, in many places, like restaurants and hotels, people use WeChat or other kinds of payment to pay
for their bills. So some scholars say that the wallet is heading for extinction (消亡,灭绝). It will die out with
the generation who read printed newspapers. The kind of shopping where you hand over notes and count out
change in return now happens only in small retail (零售) counters, like buying a bar of chocolate or a pint of
milk from a corner shop. At the shops where you spend any real money, that money is increasingly abstract.
At the most famous retail store Victoria Beckham on Dover Street, you don't have to stand at any kind of cash
register when you decide to pay. The staff (员工) are equipped with iPads to take your payment while you
relax on a sofa.
Wherever you go, you can get an excellent service, if you have the money. But across society, the
abstraction (抽象) of the idea of cash makes me uneasy. Maybe I'm just old-fashioned. But earning money
isn't quick or easy for most of us. Isn't it a bit weird (怪异的) that spending it should happen in half a blink
of an eye?
But I'll leave the economics to the experts. What bothers (使某人烦恼) me about the death of the wallet
is the change it reflects in our physical environment. The opposite of a wallet is a smartphone or an iPad.
When we pay for anything, instead of digging through pieces of paper and peering into corners in a wallet,
what we need to do is to move our fingers left and right. Show your wallet, if you still have one. It may not be
here much longer.

Artificial intelligence (AI) technology may soon be a useful tool for doctors. It may help them better
understand and treat diseases like breast cancer in ways that were never before possible.
Rishi Rawat teaches AI at the University of Southern California's (USC) Clinical Science Center in Los
Angeles. He is part of a team of scientists who are researching how AI and machine learning can more easily
recognize cancerous growths in the breast. Rawat provides information about cancer cells to a computer. He
says this data helps the machine learn. "You can put the data into them and they will learn the patterns and
the pattern recognition important to making decisions."
David Agus is another USC researcher. He believes that "machines are not going to take the place of
doctors." He adds, "Computers will not treat patients, but they will help make certain decisions and look for
things that the human brain can't recognize these patterns by itself."
Once a confirmed cancerous growth is removed, doctors still have to treat the patient to reduce the risk
of cancer returning. The form of treatment depends on the kind of cancer. Currently, researchers take a thin
piece of tissue, put it on a small piece of glass and add color to better see the cells. This process could take
days or even longer. Scientists say artificial intelligence can do something better than just count cells. Through
machine learning, it can recognize complex patterns, or structures, and learn how the cells are organized. The
hope is that machines will soon be able to make a quick diagnosis (诊断) of cancer that is free of human
mistakes.
"All of a sudden, we have the computing power to really do it in real time. We couldn't have done this,
we didn't have the computing power to do this several years ago, but now it's all changed." Agus adds that
