A
Alex and Emily Godfrey had been in Japan with their parents for nearly a week. They were there to
visit their mother’s old college roommate, who had moved to Japan to teach English. Then she fell in love
with the country and married a Japanese.
“What's our plan for the afternoon?” asked Alex after lunch one day.
“Well, ” said Mr. Ito, “we have tickets for a 4:00 baseball game. ”
“ I had no idea baseball was popular in Japan,” replied Alex.
A few hours later, the Itos and the Godfreys were seated inside the stadium among a crowd of excited
fans.
“Are those cheerleaders?” asked Emily. She was pointing to a group of men on the ball field who led
the crowd in chants and cheers. Mrs. Ito nodded, “I forget that Americans don't have cheerleaders for
baseball games. That's the difference between American and Japanese baseball culture.”
“Baseball isn’t my cup of tea, but today’s game promises to be a good one. The two teams are the best
in Japan, “ Mr. Ito added.
Once the game began, Emily and Alex found the game itself didn't seem much different at all from
the American baseball games. They were surprised, though, to see people waving American flags from
time to time.
Mr. Ito explained, “Japanese teams are each allowed to have three foreign players. When American
players come up to bat, their fans show support by waving your country’s flag.”
At the end of the game, Alex and Emily were tired, but their minds were racing with all they had seen
in the game.
“Did you have a good day, kids?” asked Mrs. Godfrey, turning to Alex and Emily.
They nodded. “After today, I have a feeling that American baseball may never be quite as interesting
again. ” said Emily.

Green is an important color in nature. It is the color of grass and the leaves on trees. It is also the color
of most growing plants.
Sometimes, the word green means young, fresh and growing. Sometimes, it describes something that
is not yet ripe or finished. For example, a greenhorn is someone who has no experience, who is new to a
situation. In the fifteenth century, a greenhorn was a young cow or ox whose horns ( 角) had not yet
developed. A century later, a greenhorn was a soldier who had not yet had any experience in battle (战役).
By the eighteenth century, a greenhorn had the meaning it has today—a person who is new in a job.
Someone who has the ability to grow plants well is said to have a green thumb (拇指). The expression
comes from early nineteen hundreds. A person with a green thumb seems to have a magic touch that makes
10
plants grow quickly and well. You might say that the woman next door has a green thumb if her garden
continues to grow long after your plants have died.
The Green Revolution is the name given some years ago to the development of new kinds of rice and
other grains (谷物). The new plants produced much larger crops. The Green Revolution was the result of
hard work by agricultural (农业的) scientists who had green thumbs.
Green is also the color used to describe the powerful feeling, jealousy (嫉妒). The green-eyed monster
is not a frightening animal from outer space. It is an expression used about four hundred years ago by
British writer William Shakespeare in his play “Othello”. It describes the unpleasant feeling a person has
when someone has something he wants. A young man may suffer from the green-eyed monster if his
girlfriend begins going out with someone else. Or, that green-eyed monster may affect your friend if you
get a pay rise and he does not.
9. If a person is said to have a green thumb, it means _____.
A. he has a magic hand B. one of his thumbs is green
C. he is good at growing plants D. his garden is greener than others’
10. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. A greenhorn meant an experienced soldier before.
B. A greenhorn now can refer to a fresh worker.
C. The Green Revolution have nothing to do with green thumbs.
D. People can make plants grow quickly by the Green Revolution.
11. A man may suffer from the green-eyed monster if _____.
A. he meets something frightening
B. he reads an unpleasant play
C. he can’t go out with his girlfriend
D. his friend gets the prize but he doesn’t
12. The author is actually talking about ________ in this passage.
A. the importance of the color green in nature
B. the development of the word green in English history
C. the different ways to describe people with the word green
D. the meaning of the word green in English expressions
