“African Youth AI Innovation Case” Officially Released

As one of the Key Activities for the 2026 China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges, the AI Case Innovation Competition for African Youth was organized by the Secretariat of the Chinese Follow-up Committee of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation and implemented by the China-BRICS Artificial Intelligence Development and Cooperation Center. Under the theme “AI for a Smarter Future, China and Africa Advancing Together on a New Journey”, the competition invited young people from African countries to submit innovative AI application cases in areas including public well-being, scientific and technological progress, industrial application, cultural prosperity and talent development. It aimed to identify practices with innovation, exemplary value and potential for wider adoption, and to promote exchanges among young talent and the sharing of innovation experience.

The competition received an enthusiastic response from African youth, attracting 738 case submissions from 47 African countries. Participants included university students, young researchers, start-ups and innovation teams. Following the selection process, 114 cases were included in the collection, offering a broad view of the diverse ways in which African youth are innovating with AI.

From healthcare and education and training to agricultural production and public governance, and from industrial transformation to cultural heritage preservation, the selected cases address local development needs in Africa and explore diverse ways of using AI to solve practical problems. Working within constraints related to internet connectivity, computing resources and equipment costs, young African innovators have adapted their approaches to local conditions, combining AI with local languages, cultural characteristics and real-world application scenarios to make technological advances more accessible and inclusive in supporting economic and social development. These efforts have not only expanded the possibilities for AI applications in Africa, but also demonstrated the ingenuity and vitality of African youth in addressing real-world needs through innovation.

Young people are a vital force in scientific and technological innovation and the future of China-Africa friendship and cooperation. The publication of this collection both showcases the innovative achievements of African youth and marks a new starting point for deeper China-Africa exchanges and cooperation in the digital sphere. It is hoped that the collection will further strengthen exchanges and mutual learning among Chinese and African youth, encourage the sharing of innovative experiences and promote practical project cooperation, enabling more innovations rooted in real needs to take hold and flourish. In this way, it will bring the energy of youth to joint China-Africa efforts to advance inclusive AI development and improve people’s well-being.
