Period 2 Reading and thinking 

The Chinese writing system: Connecting the past and the present 

Good morning,honorable judges and dear teachers!I’mCheng Fang fromTaihangmiddle school, Shanxi Province.It's my great honor to be here to share with you my teaching design. My presentation contains the next 8 aspects, analysis of teaching material, analysis of students, teaching objectives, teaching key and difficult points, teaching methodology, teaching procedure, blackboard design and teaching reflection.Next, I will present them one by one.

Analysis of teaching material

As you can see, the teaching material is about human and society. It is fromPeople'sEducationPress, English for senior students, book1unit 5. The topic of this unit is languages around the world. It contains 6 sections, including listening, reading, grammar, talking, writing and assessing. The reading material is the second part of this class, and it is also the most important part in this unitinvolving the Chinese writing system,it’s development and importance.

Analysisofstudents

The studentsI amteachingarelovely, creative and active. They are eager to learn something new, but sometimes they are shy to express themselves in English. In the first lesson, they havelearned the new words and expressions of this unit. And previously they havelearned some basic knowledge about the styles of Chinese writing system. However, they don't know exactly the detailed information about its importance and development.Sothe focus of this class is to guide them to explore the development and importance of the Chinese writing system. Also, I will teach them some reading strategies.

Teaching objectives

At the end of the class, the students will be able to summarize the main idea of the text,retellthe development of the Chinese writing system, explain the importance and functions of Chinese writing system and express their pride in Chinese culture.

Teaching key and difficult points

About the key and difficult points, I set them as follows. First,retellthe development of Chinese writing system. Second, discuss and find out the importance and functions of the Chinese writing system. Andthird, guide them to express their pride in Chinese culture.

Teaching methodology

To make my teaching procedure go smoothly, I will follow the next 3 teaching methods. First, activity-based approach to English learning. It means that the teacher should guide the students to learn the language and cultural knowledge in an integrated wayin the teaching process guided by thethememeaning and supported by the text. Next, I will adopt the interactionaltheory to encourage the student to communicate with others, because I think communication is the most important in language learning.Third,,according to the new English curriculum standard,I will try my best to improve the students’language ability, learning ability, thinking capacity and the cultural awareness.

Teaching procedure

Step 1 Lead in

At the very beginning of the class,I will give the students some photos to ask them, guess and write down the modern forms of the Chinese characters. And also ask them to think and answer the questions about the development of Chinese writing system. The purpose of this part is toarousesthe students’interest in thetextand naturally and directly lead them to the topic.

Step 2 Text presentation

Activity 1 prediction.

The next part is text presentation. This is also the most important part in the class. I organized some activities to lead them to study the text step by step. In this part, I ask them to glance at the title to predict what will appear in the text. The purpose of this activity is to get the students prepared for the text.

Activity 2 Skimming

In this part, I askedthe students to read the text quickly anddivideit into 3 parts and summarize the main idea of each part.The purpose of this activity is to make the students have a general understanding of the reading passage.

Activity 3 Scanning and making a mind map

And the next activity is scanning and making amindmap. In this part, I asked the students to read the second part of the text carefully and pay attention to the specific information, such as dates and events. And also, I taught them to draw a mind map. The purpose of this activity is to make sure the student can have a better understanding of the development of the Chinese writing system. A mind map is an effective way to make the students have a clear clue of what they are reading. I think they did a very good job. Let's look at their works, as we can see, every student has his own understanding of the development. And what surprised me most is a gift.On the second day, a student gave me a gift. I was amazed at his work. He not only understands the development of the Chinese writing system, but shows his love for Chinese calligraphy and Chinese culture. So as teachers, I think we should give students enough opportunities to show their potential. If we give them a chance, they will give us a surprise.

Activity 4Discussion and sharing

The next activity is a discussion. I divided the students into several groups to have a discussion about the roles of Chinese writing system in the Chinese culture. Also, I give them necessary guidance. I asked them to find out the keywords such as importance, connections, and also,I ask them to find out the author's attitude towards the Chinese writing system. The purpose of this activity is to make sure the students can have a deeper understanding of the importance and functions of the Chinese writing system. Alsofostertheir cooperative spirit and I encouraged them to express what they havelearned in English. Let's look at their shows.How confident they are.

Step 3 Summary

Part 3, summary. On the basis of the students’understanding of the whole passage, I askedthem to summarize what they havelearned in the text, not only about the content of this text, but also the skills theylearned to deal with a passage. Also, I ask them to make a self-assessment to check their harvestin the class. The activity is to develop thestudentssummarizing ability and self-evaluation. Also, I want to cultivate the students’creative thinking ability.

Step 4 Homework

Next is homework. To consolidate what they have Learned in the text and train the students writing ability. I ask the students to write a passage to introduce the Chinese writing system to foreigners. Now let's look at their homework.

Blackboard design

Next is the blackboard design. It plays an important role in the Chinese culture.The blackboarddesign clearly shows the structure of the text and it also shows the development of the Chinese writing system and its importance.

Teaching reflection

The last part is my reflection of this class. First, under the teacher's guidance, the students can actively take part in the activities. Basically, they have achieved the objectives we set. Second, every part is linked naturally, making the students obtain knowledge at a warm atmosphere.Third, we develop the students critical and creative thinking. And the last, we strengthen the student's pride in Chinese culture.Of course, there's a lot to improve. For example, if I had arranged the time more wisely, I would have given the students a video time to make them have a better understanding of the Chinese culture. Also, to the students who havedifficultyin oral English level, I should give them more opportunities and patience.In the future,I think I can find an effective way to teach the students to combine the learning and application. Also, I should provide more reading materials to the students to broaden their horizon, also to make them learn more and learn better. So much for my teaching design. Thank you for your listening.
