help get better results. There are many kinds of body language. They mean different things.

Gestures

Movement

My name is John. My arms are shorter than others’, but I never think I’m different. I don’t think of myself as a
“disabled” person because I feel like I can do anything I want. With the help of my parents, friends and a special
program for young people with disabilities. I know how to fight for myself and how to be strong. That doesn’t
mean it is always a piece of cake. I had some bad experiences, such as the way people looked at me, although most
people were friendly.
When I was three, my family moved to New York where there are first-class hospitals. I missed some school
because of operations. I had to work harder than others.
When I went to the seventh grade, I recovered a lot more. I also made some friends and we had a great time
together. As classes got harder, life became more difficult for me. I had to spend more time remembering things,
taking notes and preparing for exams. Luckily, I never failed any exams.
When I was at college, I wrote something about myself for a newspaper. It helped more people know me.

An Unforgettable Experience
It was the week before Christmas, and there were a lot of people waiting in a long queue at the post office hall.
It seemed that no one was moving. I came to the self-service machine where the queue was much shorter.
I don’t like self-service because I’m not good at it. The machine always asks me something I don’t know how
to answer. I hate this. I like the old-fashioned way: hand to hand, human to human. I think it is fast and friendly.
The woman in the front of the queue was clicking away at the screen. And the clicks were surprisingly loud.
There were many signs of hesitation(犹豫) on her part. I felt sorry for her: The machine could smell fear and
nervous. The next person took a long time, too. I breathed deeply. By the time it was my turn, I was so nervous that
I felt the beat of my heart.
I felt a growing pressure and I tried to minimized (减少) the seconds between clicks. Finally it was time to
slide in a credit card. The machine didn’t take it. “Trying putting it in the other way,” the gentleman behind me
suggested. No good.
“I’ve got a different card,” I said, and looked for it in my handbag, beginning to sweat. The machine wanted a
PIN (个人密码), but not the one I suggested.
“Start over,” I clicked; I tried the first card again.
Oh, no. I had to start all over again.
“I’m sorry,” I said, looking back, embarrassed. “You all go ahead.”
“Don’t give up,” said the nice man behind me. “Try it again. We’re all friends here, right?”
Seeing smiling on their face, I tried again, clicked carefully and introduce my credit card as if I were
presenting it to the queen. Finally, I made it!
I couldn’t have been happier. Everyone burst into applause (鼓掌). Comfort and joy!

We enjoy reading books that belong to us much more than if they are borrowed. A borrowed book is like a

But books are for use, not for show, you should own no book that you are afraid to mark up, or afraid to place
on the table, wide open and face down. A good reason for marking favorite passages in books is that this practice
enables you to remember more easily the important sayings, to refer to them quickly, and then in later years, it is
like visiting a forest where you once walked in.
Everyone should begin collecting a private library in youth; this habit can here be developed with every
advantage. The best wallpaper is books; they are more varied in color and appearance than any wallpaper, they are
more attractive in design, and if you sit alone in the room in the firelight, you are surrounded (包围) with close
friends. The knowledge that they are there in common thought is both encouraging and refreshing. Books are of the
people, by the people, for the people. They are part of history; the best part of personality.
Book-friends have this advantage over living friends; you can enjoy the most truly great society in the world
whenever you want it. The great dead are beyond our physical (身体的) reach, and the great living are usually
almost as too far to reach. But in a private library, you can at any moment talk with Shakespeare or Carlyle or

One day, I was told that I had a baby sister. I had a selfish thought—the kind all kids have when a new baby is
born: Mum and Dad are going to be with the baby all the time and buy her all kinds of toys. The next day my dad
told me that my sister had hearing loss.
I didn’t think much about communicating with my sister that first year because she was a baby and babies
don’t do much talking. My family and I went to a good hearing-center for several times. But the treatment didn’t
work. So my family began learning sign language. But I didn’t like it, so I did my own things. My parents spent
hours with my sister teaching her and themselves by playing sign language games.
Years passed. One day my mother asked me to sign something, and I failed. My mum was almost in tears. She
was very sad that I didn’t care enough about my sister. This hit me deeply, knowing how selfish I had been. I
needed to talk to my sister, but I couldn’t even sign basic phrases like, “Where are you?”. My family and I started
attending sign language classes at my sister’s school. We sat down as a family watching sign language movies and
playing sign language games.
Today I can communicate very well with my sister. It brings a smile to my face when my sister signs
something to me. I have realized it was no fun not knowing what my family was saying. So if you have a family
