It was a sunny winter day. I had gone down the tower when a blind man came toward me. He kept close to thewall, touching it lightly with his arm. I stood still and looked at him walking toward the tower.
“What does a blind man want to climb up the tower for?” I wondered. “Not the view(景色), certainly.
Perhaps he wants to jump.” Thinking of this terrible reason, I thought I should follow him.
He went up slowly and stopped from time to time. I followed him a few steps behind. When he got to the first
corner of the bell tower, I came close to him. “Excuse me,” I said as politely as I could, “but I wonder why you
came up.”
“You’d never guess,” he said.
“Not the view or the fresh air on this winter day? ”
“No,” he said.
“Tell me, then.”
He smiled, “Perhaps you have noticed, perhaps you won’t—how the sun shines into the tower through the
windows here and there, so that one can feel the cool steps suddenly become quite warm, even in winter. But
behind the wall there is shade(阴影). There is no place so good as this for feeling the difference between light
and darkness. Though I’m blind, I also want to feel the happiness brought by the sunlight. In fact, it isn’t my first
time to be here.” He said and seemed as delighted as a child.
I had never thought that even a blind man could have his way to enjoy the beautiful life. But we often paid no
attention to its value because we never lost it.
We went down the tower together and I left him. From then on, I began to treasure what life has given me.

“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs
is people who have come alive,” said Howard Thurman. Yes, one of the best ways to learn about other people and
other places is by visiting, connecting, and experiencing them yourself. Traveling the world opens your mind.
I remember when I was traveling, I began to know the world better. The world is not just about me, my small
town and home. Although you will meet different people from all over the world, you will realize that people are
similar in their dreams, hopes and feelings. Enjoy exploring the different cultures, and you will also find that people
are different in some of the things they do and how they live. Once you understand their ways, it will not be strange
or scary. Often you read stories about other cultures in books. Only when you visit their areas do you find that those
stories are sometimes wrong.
One thing you may find out is that there are problems all over the world. You cannot just get money to send to
these areas and hope that will work them out. The world should get involved and help wherever there are problems.
People everywhere should be given a chance. It is so easy to ignore (忽视) this if one does not travel or explore.
One can look around and see that so many people have many challenges worse than ours. One can realize that
sometimes our biggest problems are not that big after all.
On your journey you will meet a lot of new friends. Talking to strangers and finding about their lives is a great
way to spend your time. You will certainly be more confident after having to deal with problems and make many
decisions along the way.
When you travel, you have to be on your own in some situations. You will surprise yourself by how well you
can do that. All your special experiences could make an interesting book to read. It would be filled with all your
adventures and special memories.
Traveling around and seeing so much happening in the world around us is a wonderful experience. If we could
all just travel a little more and share our experiences, we would all be better people and the world would be a better
place.
31. The writer wants to tell us that ________ in Paragraph 2.
A. traveling can help us realize our dreams
B. traveling can help us better understand the world

D. traveling can help us know people all over the world are different
32. The writer advises us to help the areas in need by ________.A. offering them chances B. sending them money
C. giving them challenges D. finding out their problems
33. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Traveling Makes One a Better Person
B. Traveling Makes the World a Better Place
C. Traveling Helps People Make More Friends
D. Traveling Helps People Share Their Experiences
34. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To show how traveling can change the world.
B. To tell people how to travel around the world.
C. To encourage more people to travel around the world.
D. To share the writer’s travel experiences with other people.
