When I was little I always said I wanted to be a doctor and that hasn’t changed. I will study

When I was 14 years old, I used to babysit (做临时保姆) for the lady next door. Every two weeks she would pay
me $80. I always looked forward to getting paid so I could go to the shopping centre with my friends on Saturday
and spend the money on my favourite things.
One Friday evening I heard my mom on the phone with our neighbor and I heard her say a few times, “Oh, that is
terrible.” After my mom hung up, I asked what was wrong. She said that the neighbor had no food in her house and
that she didn’t know what she was going to feed her daughter with. Her husband had spent their money on beer and
got angry because his wife asked for money to buy groceries (食品杂货). He began to pull dishes out of thecupboards (壁橱) and threw them at the wall. So, the lady didn’t have any groceries or dishes.
I had an idea. I asked my mom to drive me to McDonald’s.I bought the lady and her daughter dinner with the
babysitting money she had given me. After I had taken them dinner, I asked my mom to take me to the store and I
bought the lady dishes and groceries with the rest of the money. When I knocked on the front door, the lady gave
me a big hug and told me how grateful she was that I helped her. When Saturday came around, I didn’t have any
money to go to the shopping centre with my friends, but I didn’t care, because I felt great that I was able to help this
family.
,
Later we moved away from the area. I saw our neighbor three times and she always told me how much she
thanked me for caring her and her daughter.

Do you want to live a happy and healthy life? Try laughing for no reason (理由) at all. That’s how thousands
of people start their day at Laughter Clubs around the world, and many doctors now think that having a good laugh
may be a very good way to stay healthy.
Dr Madan Kataria started the first Laughter Club in India, in 1995. “Young children laugh about 300 times a
day. Adults (成年人) laugh between 7 and 15 times a day,” says Dr Kataria. “Everyone is good at laughing from the
day they were born—it’s the language everyone knows. We want people to feel happy with their lives.” There are
now about 500 Laughter Clubs in India and over 1,300 all over the world.
Many doctors are also interested in the advantages of laughter on our health. A 5-year study at the UCLA
School of Medicine (医学) in California shows that with laughing, people don’t feel so stressful (有压力的).Laughter is able to make ill people turn out to be healthy.
So, what happens at a Laughter Club? I went to a club near my home to find out. I was very nervous at the
beginning of the class, and I didn’t like the idea of laughing with a group of strangers, and I was worried about
looking too funny. Our laughter teacher told us to clap (拍手) our hands and say “ho ho ho, ha ha ha...” when we
were looking at each other. In fact, our bodies can’t tell the difference between real and not real laughter. Both of
them can help us keep healthy.
,
Surprisingly it works! After ten minutes everybody in the room was laughing for real and some people
just couldn’t stop! At the end of the class, I was surprised by how happy and comfortable I felt. So when you’re
under stress, just start laughing. As Dr Kataria says, “When you laugh, you change and the world changes around
you.”
27. What can we learn from Paragraph 1 and Paragraph 2?

B. Adults laugh more often than children in a day.

D. Dr Kataria started the first Laughter Club in California.
28. How did the writer feel at the beginning of the class?
A. Nervous. B. Happy. C. Surprised. D. Stressful.
29. What’s the writer’s main purpose (目的) in writing this passage?
A. To share different ways of laughing with us.
B. To ask us to join Dr Kataria’s Laughter Club.
C. To tell us to laugh for a happy and healthy life.
D. To let us know about the starter of Laughter Club.

Do you know about smart cities? What are they like? What can people do in a smart city? Let’s find out.
,
Imagine living your life like this: When you get up in the morning you say “open the window” to a
computer and it opens the window. Then you finish breakfast and sit in front of your desk at home and begin to
have classes on the Internet. With the help of building a smart city, this may come true one day.
The idea of a smart city goes back to the year of 2010. A smart city uses smart technologies such as the
Internet to make our lives easier. People live in smart cities, where there is Internet almost everywhere. They can
do many things at home, like paying water bills, having lessons, going shopping, etc.
Now China is making some cities smarter in these ways. For example, Guiyang, Guizhou, is going to buildfree Wi-Fi in the city. Tianjin will start a “Smart City” plan to ease traffic jams.
In fact, smart cities are common in foreign countries. Here are some great ones. Dubuque became the first
smart city in the US. The city uses smart water meters ( 计量器) to let people know how much water they use
and how to save water. Copenhagen in Denmark has also used smart technologies. For example, most of their
traffic lights have sensors ( 传感器) to help buses move faster by changing the length of green lights. The city
also has parking sensors and they help car drivers find parking spaces.
