It was a sunny morning in April 2025 at Lakeside Middle School. Students were busy with their lessons
when a loud alarm suddenly broke the silence. “Fire drill (演习)! Everyone, line up quietly!” Mr Brown, the math
teacher, shouted at once.
This was the third fire drill of the year, but students took it seriously. Following the school’s new safety
rules in 2025, they covered their mouths and noses with wet cloths—some used handkerchiefs and others usedpaper towels (纸巾) from their bags. “Bend down, keep low to the ground!” Ms Lee reminded her class as they
walked through the smoke.
On the stairs, no one pushed or ran. They stayed on the right side, leaving space for rescuers. Tom, a 13-
year-old boy in Grade 8, noticed an “injured” person lying on the floor—a teacher acted to be hurt. He
remembered the first aid training: He knelt down, checked the “injured” person’s breath, and called for help
loudly. Soon, two student volunteers with first-aid boxes arrived to assist.
3 minutes later, all 800 students got together on the playground. The headmaster (校长) counted heads and
praised (表扬) everyone, “Great job! This drill helped us practise new steps—using wet cloths, helping others, and
staying calm. Real fires are unpredictable (不可预测的), but preparation keeps us safe.”
21.When did the fire drill happen?
A.In March 2025.B.In April 2025. C.In May 2025. D.In June 2025.
22.What did students use to cover their mouths during the drill?

24.Put the events happened in correct order according to the passage?
a. Covered mouths.
b. A loud alarm rang.
c. Checked the injured person’s breath.
d. Got together on the playground.
e. Got praised by the headmaster.
A.a-b-d-c-e B.b-a-c-d-e C.b-c-a-e-d D.b-a-c-e-d
25.What can we learn from the drill?
A.Fire drills are not necessary for students.
B.Only teachers need to know safety rules.
C.Real fires are easier to handle than drills.
D.Preparation and calmness help in emergencies.

Maybe You Should Learn to Relax!
These days, many parents push their children into learning more skills. They believe it helps their kids to
better compete in life. However, such a busy life can put students under great pressure.
The Taylors are a typical American family. Life for Cathy Taylor’s three children is very busy. “On most
days after school,” Cathy says, “I take one of my two boys to basketball practice and my daughter to football
training. Then I have to take my other son to piano lessons. Maybe I could cut out a few of their activities, but I
believe these activities are important for my children’s future. I really want them to be successful.” However, the
tired children don’t get home until after 7:00 p.m. They have a quick dinner, and then it’s time for homework.
Linda Miller, a mother of three, knows all about such stress. “In some families, competition starts very
young and continues until the kids get older,” she says. “Mothers send their small kids to all kinds of classes. And
they are always comparing them with other children. It’s crazy. I don’t think that’s fair. Why don’t they just lettheir kids be kids? People shouldn’t push their kids so hard.”
Doctors say too much pressure is not good for a child’s development. Dr. Alice Green says all these
activities can cause a lot of stress for children. “Kids should have time to relax and think of themselves, too.
Although it’s normal to want successful children, it’s even more important to have happy children.”
