For Lin, on that birthday, he was given a gift that would shape his life. On his day, his father took him to the
Children’s Activity Centre and said he could choose any course that interested him. There was just one
requirement (要求): Lin would have to promise he would study it for at least one year.Lin had many hobbies, but none kept his interest for more than a week or two. His mum once gave him a
bag of stamps to encourage him to collect stamps. That hobby lasted a week. Then his father got him some paints,
hoping that Lin’s artistic side would shine through. Those paints are under Lin’s bed now, still unopened. This
time, Lin’s parents would let him decide by himself.
Lin’s eyes moved down the notebook that listed all the courses on offer. He stopped at “Photography”. He
liked the idea of taking beautiful pictures, but the notice said that each student needed to take their own cameras.
Although Lin’s family wasn’t poor, a camera cost a lot of money.
He continued looking. The next course to catch his eye was “Cooking”. It sounded like something he’d like
to do. It was inexpensive and convenient (方便的). It could be done alone and it was also creative.
According to Lin’s hobby history, his dad had doubts (怀疑), but he agreed. To Lin’s parents’ surprise, Lin
kept his promise. He studied cooking at the centre every Saturday, and practised at home, making delicious meals
for his family. His family looked forward to birthdays because they could eat Lin’s cakes. Lin got great pleasure
when his food brought joy.
Months turned to years, but Lin’s hobby never changed again.
Today, Lin runs a restaurant successfully. When customers say they enjoy his meals, he still gets the same
pleasure he did as a child, and remembers the special gift he got all those years ago.

A bike-riding program for middle school students can help improve their mental (心理的) health, according
to a new study from a university of medicine in California.
The program, called Riding for Focus (R4F), was organized by a nonprofit organization (非营利组织).
Coaches (教练) spent six to eight weeks, at least three days a week, teaching middle school students’ cycling
skills and riding outdoors with them. R4F hopes to improve the students’ mental health and make them much

For this study, Loma Linda University (洛马林达大学) asked students to do surveys (调查) before and

20 different schools, joined in the surveys.
The study found that there was a general growth in students’ happiness after the cycling program. “We saw
that there were mental health advantages among the students,” Sean Wilson, a writer of the study, said in an
interview. “Before the program, most students were sluggish. After it, more students were active and had a
positive attitude towards life.”“Middle school is an important time for young people to pay attention to mental health because many of
them start to experience stress from school and society,” said Esther Walker, a program manager of the
organization. Other research shows that one in five children has a mental illness. “The bike ride can be helpful for
students to relax,” Walker said.

I’m in Paris now! Mom, Sally and I came here to visit my uncle. We are having a wonderful time. Dad
didn’t come because his company(公司) sent him to work in Japan last month. He will have to stay there until
November.
For Sally and me, it’s our first time to come to France. We are so excited! Last week Mom went to different

with Aunt Susan. Although we can’t speak French, it’s OK. Aunt Susan and Uncle Tyler can speak both French
and English.
Yesterday afternoon, Mom, Sally and Aunt Susan stayed home cooking dinner. Uncle Tyler took me to
fishing. We drove for an hour and finally arrived at his favorite lake. First, we walked around the lake looking for
a good place to fish. Uncle Tyler said we should fish from the top of a large rock.
I was so interested in catching a fish that when I threw my fishing line and hook(鱼钩) out, the rod went
with them! Uncle Tyler got my rod(鱼竿) out of the lake. Then he said that next time, I should wait until he put
bait(鱼饵) on the hook.
We fished for two hours and my uncle caught four fish. He is a fantastic fisherman. The only thing I caught

Billy Elliot is a movie about an 11-year-old boy who wants to be a ballet (芭蕾舞) dancer.
Billy Elliot lives in the north of England. His mother is dead. He lives with his father and his brother who
are both miners (矿工). Billy’s father wants him to take up boxing (拳击), but he doesn’t like it. One day, at the
sports center, Billy sees a group of girls taking ballet classes, and he joins the class without telling his father
because his father believes dancing is something that girls do. When Billy’s father knows the truth, he feels very
angry and he doesn’t let his son go to the class. But Billy keeps doing it in secret because he really loves it.
Billy’s ballet teacher Georgia wants him to learn ballet in London. When the teacher tells Billy’s father that,
he says that Billy won’t dance any more. But then, one day, he sees Billy dancing. He finally knows that his son is
good at ballet. It’s his dream so he shouldn’t give up dancing. After that, Billy’s father does everything he can to
