After college, I started working in an office and began to gain weight (增重). I would eat sweet bread and
drink coffee on my way to work. I loved to eat snacks during work. I went out for lunch every day and ate all
night after work. Within two years, I gained about 34 kilograms. I was always unhappy with my body and felt
uncomfortable in it.
In September 2022, I went to a work event. The host asked us to write down the 10 happiest and saddest
things in our lives so far that year. I couldn’t think of anything happy, but I wrote down 15 sad things. That made
all my friends amazed. Most of them had something to do with my weight or my lack of confidence. That day, I
knew I had to make a change.
The next day, I started my weight-loss journey. ________ For example, I added milk instead of creamer to
my coffee. I started to make healthy lunches at home and bring them to work. Slowly, I adapted (适应) to a diet of
mostly lean meats (瘦肉) and vegetables.
At the same time, I started exercising daily. I would, for example, take the stairs instead of the lift. I alsostarted working out at the gym and at home.
After three years, I finally lost more than 30 kilograms of weight.

There are many colors in nature. But do you think that a color has weight (重量)? I think you’ll say “no”.
But I’m afraid you are wrong. If you don’t believe it, you may do a small experiment (实验).
First, put two objects (物品) with the same weight into two boxes. Then cover the boxes. Third, wrap (包
裹) one box with a red piece of paper, the other one with a white piece of paper. OK, now hold the boxes with
your hand one by one. It is certain that you will think the red one is a little heavier.
Why do you think so? A scientist found that different colors have different weights in man’s mind. That is
to say, every color has its own weight in our mind.
The scientists told us that colors also have smell. Can you smell colors? Of course not. Then why did the
scientists say so? That is because every color stands for (代表) a kind of light with a certain wavelength (波长). It
reaches our brain (大脑) through sense organs (感觉器官).
In this research, scientists say that people accept the colors they like, and refuse the colors they hate. So
your body and mind will be healthy by using the colors you like. Or you’ll be nervous or even get ill. For
example, you like blue and hate red. If you stay in a room with red windows, wallpaper and tables and chairs for
two hours, you’ll feel you have been there for four hours. But if the room is blue, you’ll feel you have been there
for only an hour. And, if a person walks out of a blue room and into a red room, his temperature will rise. That
means our body temperature will change with different colors.
9.From the experiment, we know that ________.
A.the two boxes don’t have the same weightB.colors can change the weight of an object
C.the red paper is heavier than the white paper D.colors have different weights in people’s mind
10.From the fourth paragraph, we can infer (推断) ________.
A.the smell of colors is changeable (可变的) B.people can sense (感受) the light from colors
C.people can smell the colors through the nose D.all the colors have the same smell
11.Which of the following is TRUE?
A.White color is heavier than red color.
B.People may get ill if they refuse the colors they don’t like.
C.People can stay longer in red rooms than in blue rooms.
D.People’s body temperature will change with different colors.
12.We can know from the passage that ________.
A.red color is bad for our health B.people may get nervous in a red roomC.blue color can raise (提升) our body temperature D.colors can influence (影响) our mood (情绪) and
health

根据“That is because every color stands for (代表) a kind of light with a certain wavelength
It reaches our brain (大脑) through sense organs (感觉器官).”
根据“That means our body temperature will change with different colors.”
So your body and mind will be healthy by using the colors you like. Or you’ll be
nervous or even get ill.”

When you are busy with your schoolwork, you might find it hard to get enough sleep. We all know that not
getting enough sleep is bad for our health. But some research (研究) found that less sleep could even cause you to
have fewer friends.
According to researchers from the University of California, people who don’t get enough sleep are less
willing (adj.乐意,愿意) to socialize (v.社交) with others. They are simply too tired to go out.
The researchers did a small study. They tested 18 young people who just had a good night’s sleep and then
tested them again after a sleepless night. The participants (n.被试者) watched videos of people with neutral (adj.
中性的) expressions walking toward them. When the person on the video got too “close” to them, they pushed a
button (n.按钮) to stop the video, which recorded how close they allowed the person to get.
The results showed that people kept the person at a distance of 60 percent further back if they didn’t get
enough sleep. They felt that their personal space was being invaded (侵占). But when the participants got a good
night’s sleep, they allowed the person to get much closer to them.
According to lead researcher Matthew Walker, the less sleep you get, the less you want to socialize with
others. In turn, other people may think you are weird (adj.奇怪的) and stay away from you. This can make you
feel lonely and cause you to sleep even less. It becomes a vicious cycle (n. So if you want to be a moresociable (adj.善于社交的) and popular person, sleeping well might help. “One night of good sleep makes you feel
more outgoing and socially confident,” said Walker.
13.“When you are busy with your schoolwork, you might find it hard to get enough sleep.” What does this
sentence mean?
A.Students are too busy with their schoolwork.
B.Students have too much stress to go to sleep.
C.Students are not allowed to get enough sleep by their teachers and parents.
D.Students are too busy with their schoolwork to have enough time to sleep.
14.Researchers from the University of California believe that less sleep ______.
A.makes school life harder B.is good for one’s health
C.makes people less sociable D.causes people to become nervous
15.How did the researchers prove (v.证明) their point?
A.They did a study of 18 young people. B.They watched videos of sleepy people.
C.They interviewed people on the street. D.They invited people to play a game.

Every day, it seems, a new gadget (设备) promises to help me run farther and faster, sleep better, or monitor
(监控) my heart rate more effectively (有效地). These gadgets claim they’ll make me a “better me,” or so the
story goes.
Some of them might actually help, but a few months ago, I decided to sell all my sports gadgets. I now
record my running times with just a pen and a notepad. Soon after, I started training for a marathon the old-
fashioned way—without a device on my wrist tracking my pace or heart rate. To my surprise, running without all
that information turned out to be a real joy.
In the past, whenever my smartwatch told me I was running slower than I “should,” I’d force myself tospeed up, even if it was clear that my body didn’t want to. But this time, I ran the way I wanted to.
On several occasions (场合), I was surprised to see real breakthroughs (突破) in my running times when I
checked my notepad after workouts. If I had seen those numbers during the run, I might have slowed down. But
since I didn’t know, I just kept running.
Another positive thing about getting rid of all my running gadgets is that it’s helping me concentrate (集中
注意力) more on the running itself. Since I no longer feel like I need technology to run well, I can go out and run
without worrying about battery life.
So, what’s the lesson here? Well, we could very easily replace the example of running with writing,
studying, or anything else. No matter what it is, the more we worry about improving, the more it hurts our
performance.
Should you stop using technology to “improve” your performance? Of course, that’s up to you. However, if
I were asked that question, I’d certainly say that I’m better off without it.
41.When did the writer decide to sell all of the sports gadgets?
42.How does the writer record running times now?
43.What is another positive thing about not using running gadgets anymore?
44.What do you think of sports gadgets? Why do you think so? (at least 30 words)
41.A few months ago. 42.The writer now records running times with just a pen and a notepad.
43.It’s helping the writer concentrate more on the running itself. 44.I agree with the writer. I think they’re
not necessary for me, because I don’t need technology to run well. I can go out and run without worrying about
whether everything has enough battery power. / I disagree with the writer. I think sports gadgets are helpful for
me, because I can know the data from sports gadgets and improve my performance from time to time.
41.根据“but a few months ago, I decided to sell all my sports gadgets.”
A few months ago.
42.根据“I now record my running times with just a pen and a notepad.” The writer now records running times with just a pen and a notepad.
43.根据“Another positive thing about getting rid of all my running gadgets is that it’s helping me concentrate

Eat more fruits and vegetables. Try not to eat fast food. Third, use the phone or computer wisely. We shouldn’t
