Does it really matter if we know how old animals are? To many scientists, it does.
When studying animal populations, it is of great importance to scientists to know how many animals there are
and how old they are. This information can help scientists learn which animals are thriving and which ones need
more care and help. Scientists usually use the following ways to tell animals’ age.
For many animals, their teeth can help scientists know their age. In some animals, some teeth don’t come in
until a certain age. Take cows for example. Like humans, cows have two sets of teeth, milk teeth and permanent
teeth. They normally get their first pair of permanent teeth when they’re two years old. Then they have the next pair
at the age of three, the third pair at the age of four…
Hair and skin can also provide information about age. Some animals tend to get bad skin and gray hair as they
get older. If you have an older dog, you may have noticed that its nose and mouth get grayer as it gets older.
Animals’ eyes and ears might also help scientists tell animals’ age. As animals get older, their hearing often
becomes weak and their eyesight might begin to fail.
Scientists are continuing to discover new and more ways of telling the age of animals. Recently, scientists
have learned that ▲ . That’s really good news!
18.Which is NOT the reason why scientists need to know the age of animals?
A.To study animal populations.
B.To learn which animals are thriving.
C.To know which animals need more care and help.
D.To find out the differences between animals’ appearances.
19.How many ways of telling the age of animals are mentioned in Para. 3-5?
A.Three. B.Four. C.Five. D.Six.
20.If a cow has 4 permanent teeth, it is probably ________ years old.
A.1-2 B.3-4 C.5-6 D.7-8
21.Which sentence is the most suitable for the blank ________?
A.the number of some endangered animals is getting larger and larger
B.the latest operations could possibly help old dogs improve their eyesight
C.they can tell the age of the humpback whales by examining their DNA
D.hearing problems would no longer trouble aging animals with the help of new hearing aids

You’ll need to create a password (密码) to do just about everything on the Web, such as checking your email,
banking online, logging in WeChat and so on. And while it’s simpler to use a short, easy-to-remember password,
this can also cause serious risks (风险) to your online safety. To protect yourself and your information, you’ll want
to use passwords that are long, strong, and difficult for someone else to guess, while still keeping them easy for you
to remember.
A strong password is one that’s easy for you to remember but difficult for others to guess. Let’s take a look at
some of the most important things to think when setting (设置) a password. First, never use personal information
such as your name, birthday, user’s name, or email address. This type of information is often publicly available (可
获得的), which makes it easier for someone to guess your password. Second, use a longer password. Your
passwords should be at least six characters (符号) long or even longer. Then, don’t use the same password for each
account (账户). If someone discovers your password for one account, all of your other accounts will be in danger.
You can try to use numbers, symbols, and both capital (大写) and small letters (字母). You have to avoid using
words that can be found in the dictionary. Like “swimming”, it would be a weak password. So random (随机的)
passwords are the strongest.
Instead of writing your passwords on paper like books or notebooks where someone might find them, you can
use a password manager (a kind of App) to keep them safely online. Password managers can remember and enter
your password on different websites. That means you won’t have to remember longer passwords. So it is a good
and safe way to keep your passwords.
22.The underlined word “this” refers to ________.
A.checking your email B.banking onlineC.logging in Wechat D.using a short and easy password
23.According to the passage, “________” is the strongest password.
A.20080618 B.Swimming C.Sywi2008! D.Betty!
24.The last paragraph is mainly about ________.
A.when to keep your passwords B.how to set safe passwords
C.when to remember passwords D.how to keep passwords safely
25.The purpose of this passage is mainly to ________.
A.encourage people to check emails
B.help people set and keep safe passwords
C.stop people from using their personal information
D.tell people the differences between easy and strong passwords
22.D 23.C 24.D 25.B

22.代词指代题。根据“And while it’s simpler to use a short, easy-to-remember password, this can also cause
serious risks (风险) to your online safety.”可知,虽然使用简短易记的密码更简单,但这也会给你的上网安全
带来严重风险。this 指代的是using a short password“使用短密码”。故选D。
23.细节理解题。根据“You can try to use numbers, symbols, and both capital (大写) and small letters (字母).
You have to avoid using words that can be found in the dictionary. Like ‘swimming’, it would be a weak password.
So random (随机的) passwords are the strongest.”可知,密码可以尝试使用数字、符号以及大写和小写字母,
同时最好是没有规律性的。结合选项可知,C选项最符合。故选C。
24.段落大意题。根据“So it is a good and safe way to keep your passwords.”

Straight or arched (弯的), thick or thin-eyebrows come in many shapes and sizes. But what are eyebrows even
for? They don’t keep us warm like our hair, or help us breathe like our noses. 26 Researchers from the
University of York in the UK believe that eyebrows helped us communicate better when we were still evolving (进
化).
Early humans had large brow ridges (肩骨) . This helped them show their strength. Later, as the human face
evolved to become smaller and flatter (更扁平的), our eyebrows allowed us to express complex (复杂的)
emotions, as well as better understand others’ emotions, The Guardian reported. 27 This is a sign that
someone is willing to interact (互动) with others. While pulling our eyebrows up in the middle is an expression ofsympathy (同情), Penny Spikins from York University told The Daily Telegraph. If you still find this hard to
understand, just draw a simple face on a piece of paper and draw a line above the eyes. 28 You will find
that it is very easy to show anger, fear or surprise on a face.
29 They can also protect our eyes. Their arched shape can help to move rain or sweat around to the
sides of our faces, keeping our eyes dry, the BBC reported. Together with our eyelashes(眼睫毛), eyebrows can
also help to keep dust and other things out of our eyes. 30 In that case, some researchers believe that we
would have evolved same other facial feature to perform the same functions (功能) . That could make us look quite
different.
A.For example, a quick flash of the eyebrows.
B.Let’s take rolling one’s eyes as an example.
C.What if we didn’t have eyebrows?
D.You can draw lines in different shapes and directions.
E.So why do we have them?
F.But this is not the only purpose of our eyebrows.
G.Eyebrows stop sweat from coming down into the eyes.
26.E 27.A 28.D 29.F 30.C

Superfast Writing Robot
Tech company has made a powerful robot that can write novels.
Type in “A cat wants to go to space” and ask the robot to write a bedtime story. Just one second later, you’ll
get the story of Max, who struggled his way past many difficulties to sing among the stars.
This robot writer is real. It’s called ChatGPT. US company OpenAI developed it to create human-like texts. It
can translate languages, communicate with people and write songs, poems and even jokes. It’s one of the most
powerful AI of its kind, with the complete writing area of a real person!
People around the world have tried ChatGPT and posted their results on social media. Some used it to write
history articles, some asked it to take notes of presentations, and some even formed advice on how to chat with
people at a party, reported The Atlantic.
The power of ChatGPT lies in its speed and understanding of difficult matters. We may spend hours
researching, understanding and writing an article in a special field. But ChatGPT can produce a well-written one in
seconds. Another good thing about it is that if you ask dark, harmful questions, such as how to make gun, it will not
give you an answer.
ChatGPT comes along at a time when AI is becoming increasingly able to do creative tasks. The materials they
create are difficult to be different from those made by humans. This leads to many problems, such as the copyright
and the definition(定义) of art. Since the system is largely trained using words from the Internet, it can also pick up
those which are not suitable for certain groups. These are the things humans need to solve.
