Everyone seemed so smart. They were everything I wasn’t but wanted to be. So it was strange how eagerly I expected to run for eighth grade secretary from my heart. Anyone interested in running should see the math teacher for qualification forms (资历表). I followed the crowd to the math classroom. Without even thinking twice, I filled out and turned in the forms, but I had no idea what I had got myself into. The only thing you could see in the eighth grade hall were posters. Bookmarks and flyers littered the hallways. That week, my friends and I passed out the bookmarks we’d made by ourselves. Everything was going as planned…until it was time for my speech. As I got ready to present my speech, my sweat glands (汗腺) went into overdrive as the camera fixed on my face. What did my hair look like? Did I look at the camera? And most of all, did I look as frightened as I felt? Somewhere between handing out bookmarks and delivering my speech, I asked myself one question: “What are you doing, Jack?!” I felt lost. But in the midst of the anger and fear was something unexpected. I had learned some amazing things about who I was. Not only did I give a speech in front of 300 kids, but I introduced myself to people I’d never even met before. In fact, I felt unbelievably confident. I can’t remember every detail about the election (选举). But what I do remember is that I won! The shy and quiet boy won! Stay unnoticeable? NO! Why be unnoticeable when you can shine? I’m already planning my re-election speech. And I’ve learned the importance of taking a chance and believing in yourself. And next time if there’s something you want to do, just do it! 24. What did the writer really expect to do from his heart? A. To stay unnoticeable at school. B. To run for eighth grade secretary. C. To meet the math teachers often. D. To follow the crowd to do things. 25. How did the writer feel as he got ready to present his speech? A. Nervous. B. Confident. C. Relaxed. D. Curious. 26. What has the writer learned from his experience? A. Winning the election is necessary. B. Tips on presentation are important. C. Everything needs to be well planned. D. Be confident and do things as you wish. 24. B 25. A 26. And next time if there’s something you want to do, just do it!” D。 CDo you have trouble trying to create the next big idea? Sometimes the answer isn’t to just force an idea out of your mind. Instead, you might want to try sitting back, relaxing and letting your mind wander (走神). Yes, you heard that correctly. If you are in need of a new idea, try daydreaming. Daydreams allow your mind to run freely and even increase productivity in some cases. Daydreaming develops creativity which is why you have an ah-ha moment and sudden insight about a situation. Daydreaming allows you to uncover thoughts and ideas you did not realize you even had and get the thoughts hidden under the surface. Researchers from the University of California, Santa Barbara, found an association ( 联 系 ) between daydreaming and creative problem-solving. Their study includes making participants (参与者) first do an “unusual- use task”. They had to try to come up with as many different ways to use an object as they could. Then, the participants chose to do one of the following four things before doing the “unusual-use task” again; complete a difficult task, complete an easy task, take a 12-minute break, or skip (跳过) a 12-minute break and move right on to the task exercise again. Surprisingly, the group that performed best was the one that completed the easy task. Many participants reported that they were daydreaming while performing the easy task. So the researchers believed that this daydreaming might have helped unlock their creativity. But how could daydreaming help the brain come up with creative ways? The answer is something known as “unconscious thought” . Even when you are not actively working to solve a problem, it is still in the back of your mind. Your brain is still thinking about the problem, but in a much more subtle(不易察觉的) way. When you daydream, your mind is allowed to think in ways it normally would not. Because it is free of control, it can create completely new and out-of-the-box ideas. Great ideas never come easily, but that does not mean you always have to work hard to get them. Feel free to do what you want and let your mind wander. 27. The “unusual-use task” included having participants ________. A. complete a very simple task B. achieve a very difficult task C. have a break for 12 minutes D. find various uses for an object 28. Those who completed the easy task performed best because ________. A. they worked harder on the easy task B. they saved time for the following task C. they chose to stay away from the difficult task D. they came up with more ideas while daydreaming 29. The words “unconscious thought” in Paragraph 6 probably mean “________”.A. wander in a subtle way under your control B. know clearly what you’re thinking and doing C. think about a problem without even knowing it D. stop processing information from the outside world 30. The passage mainly tells us that ________. A. daydreams are good for people’s well-being B. daydreaming is a way to improve creativity C. completing tasks is important to creative ideas D. problem-solving skills are important in our lives 【答案】27. D 28. D 29. C 30. 根据“They had to try to come up with as many different ways to use an object as they could”他们 必须想出尽可能多的不同方法来使用一个物体。 根据“Many participants reported that they were daydreaming while performing the easy task” 可 知许多参与者报告说,他们在做简单的任务时做白日梦。 根据“ Even when you are not actively working to solve a problem, it is still in the back of your mind. Your brain is still thinking about the problem, but in a much more subtle (不易察觉的) way”也就是说即使 你没有积极地去解决一个问题,它仍然在你的脑海里。 根据“So the researchers believed that this daydreaming might have helped unlock their creativity” 可知研究人员认为,这种白日梦可能有助于释放他们的创造力。故选B。 D Ten years ago, many people thought that the age of physical books was coming to an end. The objects that had been the companions (伙伴) of millions of readers for hundreds of years were about to disappear. Soon, we’d all be reading on little electronic screens and laughing at the memory of places called “libraries” and “bookshops”. But it seems not true about the idea of the death of the physical books. At least in the UK, as The Guardian noted, sales of e-books are falling while sales of physical books are rising. More surprisingly, it’s young people who are buying the most physical books. More than 60 percent of 16-to-24-year-olds preferred print books to e-books. The most popular reason given was:“I like to hold the product.” Books become very personal objects to lovers of reading. It often starts with the way they get them. Many buyers of books like to write down their names on the inside cover when they’ve bought one. And we carry books around with us everywhere. If there’s a mark made on the pages from coffee or food, it doesn’t matter. These accidents make the book— our book—even more personal. It’s as if readers of physical books make friends with them. Of course, some could say that the devices(设备) on which people read e-books, like Kindles and iPads are also objects that we like. But it isn’t quite the same. A Kindle can hold as many pieces of writing as a whole library. But a story we remember from our time turning its pages in our favourite armchair enters our memory forever. Physical books are as valuable to some readers as photographs of family members. This “friendship” people develop with books isn’t just about feelings. Research has shown that readers remember more information read from physical books than electronic ones. However, there’s no doubt e-books are here to stay. They aren’t simply a “here today, gone tomorrow” thing. But it’s also certain that physical books, which have been in production since the fifteenth century, are here to stay, too. 31. The writer probably agrees that ________. A. physical books will be no longer made soon B. lovers of physical books are mostly old people C. sales of e-books and print books are both rising D. physical books are making a comeback in the UK 32. What can we know about physical books? A. Physical books are sure to get more and more popular. B. People develop lasting friendships by reading physical books. C. The readers keep more information in mind with physical books. D. Young people prefer physical books with development of technology. 33. What’s the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage? A. To explain why physical books will not disappear soon. B. To suggest that readers read more physical books than e-books. C. To show that people have different kinds of reading preferences. D. To discuss what makes e-books become the companions of readers. D 32. C 33. 根据第二段“But it seems not true about the idea of the death of the physical books. At least in the UK, as The Guardian noted, sales of e-books are falling while sales of physical books are rising. More surprisingly, it’s young people who are buying the most physical books. 根据“But a story we remember from our time turning its pages in our favourite armchair enters ourmemory forever.” 故选A。 The Library With No Rules When you walk by Hernando Guanlao’s home on Balagtas Street, downtown Manila, you will see thousands of books on shelves and on the stairs. Each one is free to anyone who wants it. “People can borrow, take home, bring back or keep,” says Guanlao. “Or they can share and pass on to another. But basically they should just take, take!” He thinks books need to live, and they’re only alive if they are being read. “The act of giving books makes your life meaningful,” says Guanlao. The Reading Club 2000, as the project is called, began more than twenty years ago. “My parents gave me my love of reading,” he says. “I started the club to honour them and to do some kind of community service. So I put my old books—and my brothers’ and sisters’, maybe 100 in all—outside, to see if anyone was interested.” It took a while for people to work out that this was a library. It never closed and there were no rules in it. But the project, offering everything from paperbacks to fashion magazines, technical boaks and school textbooks, is becoming popular. The success of the project is helped by the fact that the country, with a population of 92 million, has fewer than 700 public libraries, and many people cannot afford to buy books. Luckily, the project is spreading. Guanlao takes boxes of books into—Manila’s neighbourhoods himself. He has also helped friends set up similar projects in ten other places around the country, and encouraged students to donate (捐赠) books. Aurora Verayo, from a town several hours’ drive from Manila, says she came to see Guanlao to donate books, but he encouraged her to open her own library. “I’m going a step further and offering reading activities for children,” she says. Mark, 16-year-old student, is organizing a book donation with friends. “We’ve collected.” he says, “We’re taking them to some poor books so far, and we expect many more, areas next month. Books open minds. A book can take you anywhere.” 34. What does Guanlao think of books? ________________________________________________________________________ 35.
