Thomas was a schoolboy. In 1996, he sailed alone across the Pacific Ocean. Many other
people did this before Thomas, but he was special. At age 14, he was the youngest person to sail
across the Pacific by himself. Thomas left his hometown on July 22, 1996. In the boat, he prepared
enough food and water for 2 months. He also had a radio and other modern equipment for sailing.
The beginning of the trip went very well. Thomas often talked to his parents by radio. Then, on
August 11, the engine in his boat was broken and that caused the power problem. This made
him lose his way. Five days later, his radio didn’t work and he couldn’t communicate with
anyone. And he was still 4,490 kilometers away from his destination San Francisco.
By the end of August, many people believed that Thomas was lost. Then, on September 13,
Thomas sailed into San Francisco. After 55 days in his boat, his trip was finally over.
Different people have different opinions on the adventure of Thomas. What’s yours?

M: Because they were cheap to make. They were also a good way to carry people. But there was
one problem.
W: What’s that?
M: They were human-powered vehicles, so people had to push them. Fortunately, most of them
are equipped with motors today. Next time, if you travel to China, Italy, England or Japan,
you can have a try.
W: Of course. I can’t miss the chance.
