What are some of the biggest scientific discoveries in the history of humans? How have they changed our
lives? Are all the scientists born with creativity?
There was once a famous scientist who made several important discoveries. Once he was asked how he was
able to be so creative. He replied that it all came from an experience he had with his mother at the age of 2. He
was trying to take a bottle of milk out of the fridge. But the bottle was too slippery and he dropped it. The kitchen
was covered in milk.
When his mother came into the kitchen, instead of shouting at him or punishing him,she said,"Robert,
what a great and wonderful mess you have made!I have never seen such a huge puddle(水坑)of milk. Would
you like to play in the milk for a few minutes before we clean it up?"
So he did. After a few minutes, they cleaned it up together. Then his mother said,"This was a failed
experiment(实验)in how to carry a big bottle of milk with two small hands. Let's go out in the backyard and
fill the bottle with water and see if you can find a way to carry it without dropping it.”
The little boy learned that if he held the bottle at the top near the mouth with both hands,he could carry it
without dropping it. What a wonderful lesson! The scientist then added that it was at that moment that he knew he didn't need to be afraid to make mistakes.
He learned that mistakes are just chances to learn something new which is after all, what scientific experiments
are all about. Even if the experiment doesn't "work", we can still learn something valuable from it.
1. Which word in the passage can match the meaning of "being smooth, wet or oily and difficult hold"?

B. used to like drinking milk and be very careless

A. Mother plays the only important role in children's future life.
B. To be creative, we should keep an open mind about mistakes.
C. Scientific experiments must be valuable.
5. Which of the following words best describes Robert's mother?
A. Careful. B. Smart. C. Strict.
【答案】1. C 2. A 3. C 4. B 5. B

Ink wash painting (水墨画) is an old and beautiful Chinese art. This special drawing technique is created
with a brush, dipped into ink, then in water before being painted onto rice paper or silk. As you can see, the
paintings are created just in black and white. It is said that the technique was invented by an artist named Wang
Wei.
Ink wash paintings often feature trees, flowers, landscapes, animals, birds and people. Also, they often go
with Chinese poems. The painting style does not put high importance on a precise description of a real scene or
object. They are often improvised (即兴的) works from beautiful scenery (风景). Therefore, this type of painting
is hard to copy. Today there are many new Chinese artists that use the traditional Chinese ink wash technique to
draw new sceneries and pictures.
The first ink wash animation (动画) in China came out in 1960. It’s called Little Tadpole Looking for
Mummy. All the animals, plants and rocks in the film are drawn with ink and brush. The film is about 15 minutes
long. But it took lots of work. Without computers, the artists had to draw everything by hand. One second of
animation needs 24 pictures! Little Tadpole Looking for Mummy won prizes at home and abroad. From then on,
ink wash painting and animation becomes more popular in China. People in the world get to know more about ink
wash since then!

B. About 40 years ago.

第三节 (共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)

Dinosaurs (恐龙) once lived on the earth for a long time. They suddenly disappeared millions of years ago.
What happened to them? That’s still a mystery. People never stop searching for the answer.
Some US scientists say it is because there were not enough male (雄性的) dinosaurs. They got this idea after
researching crocodiles (鳄鱼).
Mother crocodiles lay eggs and later baby crocodiles come out. The local temperature decides the sex (性别)
of the baby crocodile. When the eggs are at a temperature of 26℃ to 30℃, the babies are all girls; when the
temperature is 30℃ to 34℃, there are both boys and girls; when it is 34℃ to 36℃, only boys are born.
Dinosaurs’ babies also came from eggs. So scientists have given us a new picture: millions of years ago, it
suddenly became very cold. Almost all dinosaur babies were girls. There were fewer and fewer male dinosaurs.
Mother dinosaurs could not give birth to more babies. Finally, these powerful animals disappeared.
1. When did dinosaurs suddenly disappear?
____________________________________________________
2. Where did Dinosaurs’ babies come from?____________________________________________________
3. What decides the sex of the baby crocodile?
____________________________________________________
4. Are the baby crocodiles only boys when it’s 35℃?

2.In the 1890s the bicycle was a must-have for people, so they could go anywhere they wanted. For the first
time m the history, people were able to come and go as they pleased. There is no more need for expensive horses
and carriages (马车). By 1898 cycling had become such a popular activity in the United States.
3. It is believed that the Englishman. John Starley, was the inventor of the modern bicycle. His uncle had
developed the penny-farthing, an early type of bicycle that had a very large front wheel (轮子) and a small back
wheel, in 1870s. However, many people were afraid to ride such a high wheel bicycle then. So in 1885 Starley
changed the bicycle in 885 with the “Rover Safety Bicycle” the bike looked like the bikes we ride today. 4It had
two wheels of the same size and a low seat between them, which made the bike safer and easier to ride.

【答案】例文
I have changed a lot in the past two years. I used to have time management problems. Since Junior 1, I have
been the class leader and have been trying to help my teachers manage the class. At first, I found I had little time
left for my studies and failed several tests.I didn't want to be the class leader any longer. But my headteacher said that I should try to improve my time
management skills first. He gave me some tips. For example, I can do two things at once, like listening to lesson
tapes while running. My teacher also said I could share some of the class leader work with other classmates.
I've now developed good habits and found a balance between my studies and other class work.
